What sniper or hunting rifle to choose?

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 11:01 pm

With the Gun Runners' Arsenal installed the choices for high power weapons is getting overwhelming.

So here is the choices;

The sniper rifle,

The Paciencia

The Gobi Campaign scout rifle

or ?

Anti-Materiel Rifle with explosive rounds is the best choice if you've got the stats and you're good at sniping, because no matter what enemy and what difficult you're playing, if you use that setup, a Sneak attack critical headshot is gonna kill your target. Think only Joshua Graham could survive that.

However, if your aim isn't godlike and you're prone to missing, then I'd go with the Gobi or Christine's (think Christine's is superior). Basically, the snipers with a low clip (Panciencia) or slow reload time (GRA AMR) are for if you're good, the snipers that are rapid-fire-ish are there for if you prefer being able to miss.

Regular sniper rifle or Christine's COS rifle. If you want to be a sniper, you better rely on sneak critical hits, upgraded .308 ammunition and a silencer in your weapon.

That or just get Boone, give him a Marksman rifle, ample amounts of 5.56mm ammo and a beer crate for you to drink while he wipes out half the wasteland in righteous fury.

Of the choices it depends. If you want a proper sniper then I would go with the Gobi since, although it doesn't have a silencer, it does have better spread. Paciencia is tied with the Hunting Rifle in having the second lowest spread of any weapon in the game, but the iron sights on it are slightly off which makes long range shots a crap shoot, but it's still a brilliant mid range gun.

If I would have to choose what I consider the best sniper rifle in the game I'd have to suggest the fully modded Hunting Rifle. As I've said it has an incredibly low spread and the iron sights problem is nullified with one of the most powerful scopes in the game.

I have ratslayer. I think it is ok for low levels but what about going after death claws? Like when would like something better?

AMR pretty much. Simple, killing machine, bolt action, Lots of fun.

If you have a habit of going for head shots, the sniper rifle is probably a better choice, you can kill a deathclaw with a sneak headshot.

Try the AMR, the fully modded Sniper Rifle, and the fully modded Hunting Rifle and decide which one you like more. They each have their own attributes: the AMR is the most powerful, the Sniper Rifle can be silenced and has high DPS and the Hunting Rifle is the most accurate gun in the game and is between the other two power-wise. My favourite is the Hunting Rifle, but their close enough together in strengths that you should try them all.

I favor silenced sniper platforms, so my usual progression is Varmint Rifle + silencer --> Ratslayer --> Sniper Rifle + suppressor, but with GRA the AMR with a suppressor may also be worth a look.

It also depends on how wealthy you are. Don't forget that no matter what you're shooting, you're shooting caps. Ratslayer is the best bang-for-buck choice for hunting low-level, lightly armored things. Sniper Rifle can reliably take down anything except Deathclaws and heavily armored humans, although with AP ammo and a good aim Deathclaws can be taken. AMR will one-shot anything, but its ammo is very expensive, especially if you want Explosive rounds. On hardcoe, AMR is rather impractical even with GRA upgrades, because 20 rounds for it weight 5lbs.
