I blazed through New Vegas...cause that guy shot me in the head! Revenge is a hell of a motivater. And anytime I thought, ok I'm not as mad as I was, I'll play along with Benny or Mr. House....I got snapped back, and revenge was right back on the plate. Now look, some girl with doe eyes or a lost puppy runs across my path...I'll stop what I'm doing to help. Well, there needs to be more lost puppies. Cause 'exploration' is not very high on the list when I'm hot on the trail of a guy who shot me in the head.

Similarly I'm still playing FO: 3, but unless something runs across my path, I'm finding my dad!! And now I'm afraid I'm near the end cause we just got out of Tranquility Lane. More cute girls who need rescuing please!!

Revenge is a dish best served cold. I take my time, enjoy the game/world, then cut his nads off in my own sweet time. Getting revenge on Benny isn't the end of the game, anyway, in NV. You can go defenestrate him quickly, and still spend days/weeks finishing up the rest of the game at your leisure, afterwards.

Meh, I just kind of stoll along. When I get to Benny I lure him to the Presidential Suite, one shot him in the head with a silenced weapon, then pose his body to make it look like he died on a bender of Jet, Psycho, and Med-X, there by making him look like he was a chem addict who died from to many chems.

One would have to wonder which one of the chems ate the hole all the way through his head...

I read my boxing magazines and then punched him to death with my 20(+20 from the magazine = 40) unarmed brass knuckles taking his suit and leaving his body crumpled in the corner.

Depends on the main quest of the game.

For example, in Morrowind I never did it. Why? The motivation was "the emperor you never met wants you to deliver this letter." Oooooh~ think of all the consequences if I don't deliver it!
In Oblivion, I at least had to rescue Martin, then I slowed down on the main quest. It felt urgent to save him.
In Fallout 3, I wandered but also did the main quest when it was convenient. Your dad tells you not to look for him and tbh I was in no way whatsoever attached to my "dad" I'd known for 5 friggin minutes.
In New Vegas, my first playthrough I rushed to the Strip, now I play the path to the Strip differently depending on the faction I'm supporting. For example an NCR character takes longer to get there because there's multiple NCR quests along the way. A very broad, general playthrough will take his time with the main quest after the Boomers, a RP character that's a die-hard supporter of a certain faction will advance the main quest whenever it's convenient. (like if I happen to be in that area)
In Skyrim I find myself....well I'm already bored, probably because I find myself wanting to do the main quest. The factions and side-quests are very underwhelming, so I have trouble roleplaying and ultimately end up doing the main quest.

Overall I prefer a main quest that doesn't feel urgent so that I can roleplay some. FO3 and Morrowind were good because they weren't at all urgent, New Vegas was also good because it wasn't urgent, but rather it was a personal goal and a personal decision to take revenge on Benny.

I usually run straight to New Vegas and kill Benny, but after that I just kind of wander around, role play awhile, explore, just do my own thing. Actually most of the time I go and do Honest Hearts so I can gain some experience and get some good gear.

Revenge statement is entirely true

Well, I started over FO:NV, and am wandering more...more "Hey what's that building over there!", I'll even try and keep Benny alive if I can. NV is SO good, and huge, that I'm fairly able to forget what I did last time, and still keep the same morality more or less.

In FO:3, my dad just (did what happens when the Enclave shows up), so I don't even feel particularly motivated to keep doing the main quest. Water schmater.

Getting Benny is a secondary objective for me. I investigate the situation carefully, make decisions, and when meeting him finally I usually try to strive for an attempt of peaceful negotiation, hearing his story. Make no mistake he dies in every save of mine, but shooting him in front of everyone, or beating him like a savage is not my style. My characters are always civilized people and behave like they are humans, not some wasteland mutant asswipes. My main way of dealing with Benny is on-the-spot execution in Caesar's tent.

Myast playthrough I put more points into sneak and took my .22 pistol in with me, with my 10 luck, 1st recon beret, finese perk, and better criticals.

With those odds he went down faster than a Legion member against a team of NCR Snipers.

I usually wander around and explore. During this second run through when I caught up to Benny, I did the same thing to him that I did in the first run through - lured him to his hotel room, slept with him and killed him in his sleep. May as well have him die happy.

In Fallout 3 I wandered around, did the side missions and then once I was ready I went in search of my character's dad.

I like to take my time in such games, never in any rush.

I like the personally-motivated main quest of FO3 and FNV, since you can decide how important it is to you. For me I find that it's the other way around - I tend to take my time with the both main quest lines until it starts to involve the bigger picture - after the Enclave arrives in FO3 and after the vets arrive in FNV. Then I feel obligated to complete them as soon as possible.

No, I'm just getting distracted way too easy,
In Fallout 3, similar as Longknife, I really didn't care at all about *Dad*. Perhaps it's because I'm a lot closer to Daddys age than LW's, perhaps because I thought, they were trying too hard with that "Look, get attached too him, he's even being voiced by Liam Neeson(whom I don't like at all, btw)"-thing, I don't know.
In FNV, I just got svcked into so many other things, that I really forgot about Benny quickly. It took my more than 25 hours to finally arrive in Boulder City, and more than 60 to finally confront him in the Tops during my first playthrough.
But generally I think, it's the open world design and the 10000 things you can do, which makes it easy to turn yourself into a kind of a Drifter and hard to stay focused on the main plot.

I'm the other way around... I was level 49 in Skyrim before even STARTING the main quest.
In FONV I was 30 before picking a side.

It is a downfall for me, because I'll sometimes burn out on a game before the main quest starts.
FO3 wasn't so bad because you actually have very few side-quests in that game. FONV, was WAY worse because there are quests all over the show. Meanwhile Skyrim has (literally) infinity quests, which sent my OCD into overdrive.

Unlike all of you heartless kids, I love my dad, so that was first on the list. After tranquility lane, however, I feel like a job has been well done and then I side quest in earnest.

In New Vegas, I felt no sadness when I got shot in the head, and since there was no harm done, I give Benny a chance and challenge him to a duel in the arena.

Also, if you wish to save Benny, be prepared for a fight.

Fallout isn't about playing a character with a pre-set background of a kid loving his daddy. It's about freedom to make the character you want.

In Fallout 3 right now I completely ignore the storyline and just pretend it doesn't exist. I just explore the post-nuclear DC and take in the awesome art. In New Vegas, it depends on my character's mindset.

Yeahhhh....I shot the guy in NV who gave me Caeser's Mark, figuring I'm forgiven and all...then on the way to the cove, me and Boone killed a few more. Needless to say, it took a while to fight our way to Benny.
