Install/Uninstall problems

Post » Sat Oct 31, 2009 12:05 am

I'm not really sure how this happened, as I know not to mess with critical software files, but...I recently installed a GUI mod that I didn't care for, and after removing it, it removed some textures from the original game files and I wasn't sure how to replace them...so I just decided to go ahead and completely uninstall Oblivion entirely and do a fresh install(I planned on doing it anyways for other reasons.) So, I insert the CD and click on "Uninstall" and it tells me that the Setup.exe was missing... :brokencomputer:

Now, this is a legitimate copy of the game, I paid money for it from an actual store...so the files should all be there, and I'm not going to some random site to try and locate something like that. I can't play the game, nor can I remove it. I'm stuck :S

Can anyone please tell me what to do to fix my Oblivion?

The games original files are all packed in BSA archives, you couldn't have removed them when you uninstalled the mod. Really it is very unlikely that you could mess your installation up enough to require a complete reinstall. But if that is what you want to do, then try to manually locate setup.exe on the oblivion disk. Run it from there.

Well...I honestly saw no way to fix what that mod did, so yeah.

I feel so stupid for not thinking of going in the disc

Thank you so much! :D

To find the setup.exe file go to the DVD and use Explore to find the files on the disc -- the uninstall is looking for it on the HDD not the game disc so is telling you it is missing since it is not copied there as part of the install -- just explore the DVD and double click on the setup.exe file you find there. If that does not work then the guide will take you through the needed steps to uninstall manually.

For future reference, Oblivion sometimes runs into problems when you're trying to uninstall. It's a fairly common issue, it's happened to me a couple of times as well. If you can't do it through the shortcuts or through the Windows Add/Remove Software function, then just open up the disc and run it from there as mentioned.
