I'm looking to mod Oblivion with a guamet of visual mods and improved graphics on high settings and with little lag, could you guys give me some advice to help out before I make a choice.

First off cost, I am not rolling in cash, but as updating for a modded oblivion may just help me from having to do it later on, I am able to put a fair amount in 50 - 100 lets say for a card at least.

The system I have now, I'm very happy on vanilla with some mods, but looking for one that I can just add to, so please check it out and see if their is any advice you can give.

One thing that would help, is a "real" hardware accelerated sound card. You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on it either. I picked up a Soundblaster Audigy 2 for 25 bucks off of amazon. Not sure jumping to a more powerful video card would do you any good, I think the processor would become a choke point. You system board is socket AM2, so, not much in the way of CPU upgrades either.........

I feel a new video card will fair you off a lot better than a dedicated soundcard right now (not that it was a bad idea to suggest it though...soundcard does help too). The Athlon 7750 is a pretty decent dual-core chip that would be nicely paired with something like a Radeon 5670 or Radeon 5750...but the question is what power supply do you have in your system?? It would be helpful to list:

- brand
- model
- wattage
- amperage value for +12V spec (most important)

If you're looking for an Oblivion game that's more graphic intensive than you already have, you're not going to be able to get a decent video card for only $50-100. The 4650 you have now is already a fairly good card, if you want something better you're going to have to go top of the line, and those models cost money. Certainly more than you seem willing to spend.

Pounds so I can go for more here with the ￡-$ difference, but yes I'm getting that impression.
The card does handle games very well, I was just thinking of improving for the best performance for a high modded game such as Oblivion, and I find hardware difficult to grasp to be honest.

Even still, that's not a lot of money to spend on a card that's better than what you already have. Those models don't come cheap. I'd say settle for what you have and either save the 50-100 or buy something else. It kind of sounds like a new power supply wouldn't hurt, and the suggestion for a sound card is a pretty good one as well.

I don't agree with this at all. The Radeon 4670, 5570, 5670, and even the GeForce GT 240 all perform considerably better than a Radeon 4650 and can be had around or under $100. The problem here is the lack of sufficient power supply in the system to support the upgrade. At this point, until there's a better power supply in the system, I can't comfortably suggest any of the cards. And I can't find a decent video card + PSU combo that falls within $100 either.

So in the end, the suggestion is to save more money...or get a new power supply and/or soundcard.

I have just upgraded my power supply to a output of 750 wattage and 24 amps, plus a dedicated sound card is in the mail..

So we talked the other day and considered that the computer would need upgrading some time anyway, and that we can splash out a bit more atm..

750W power supply is overkill. And only 24A on the +12V spec? That is REALLY low for that caliber of a PSU. Just what brand and model did you get? These things really matter with PSUs. You don't go cheap and generic with power supplies...at all. It's IMO the most important component in your PC, able to power everything but also able to destroy everything if it's bad quality.

As for other suggestions, how much are you looking to spend now?

A bit of overkill but it doesn't hurt to have more than you need. It will help extend the life of the power supply if it doesn't have to break a sweat.



Well you should definitely think about some sort of quad-core. More programs are coming out now that make use of that architecture so it makes sense now to get one. Don't bother with anything higher than that as it will be years before software developers start writing anything for them. You also want to get a motherboard that can use DDR3 RAM, and comes with 6 slots for it, not 4 like the DDR2 boards. Eventually someone is going to release a 64bit game and having that extra RAM will allow you to make full use of those slots. Though of course you'll have to upgrade to Windows 7 64bit to run it. As for a video card, go for something in the 5000 series of ATI or the 400 series of NVidia. Those are their DirectX 11 lines, which will eventually be used by more and more game in the future. There are already a number of games out there that make use of it. Civ 5 is one of them. That's also one of the ones that can make use of a quad-core processor.

Yes it probably exceeds what we need, but the price for it was not much dearer than the others so I went for it.

Another thing you might want to consider, which shouldn't cost you that much, is a Blu-Ray compatible disc drive. Not only would that give you a great deal of backup space on a Blu-Ray disc, but you'd also be able to watch Blu-Ray movies on your computer. If you eventually upgrade to Windows 7, you could go for the Home Premium edition which comes with Windows Media Centre. Which is a nice program for watching TV and DVDs etc. A TV tuner card would allow you to use your computer just like a TV. They don't cost very much either.
