Did you install the drivers for the pad? Without drivers the PC wont know wtf it is plugged in and wont know what to do with it.

No you have to download and install the device drivers from the MS website. The initial plug and play install only detects the controller, but not as an x-input device (x-box pad).

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/p/xbox-360-controller-for-windows#support

Follow the link, choose your OS version, download and install the device drivers.

Do you have a "Microsoft" xbox controller? I always hear about others, mainly Mad Catz that doesn't work with games on PC.

The xbox controller doesn't need you to download drivers from the website, it's plug and play. There is a driver update that always pops up on my Windows Update when I reinstall windows though, so it might be worthwhile checking for updates on Windows Update.

The controller itself does work with Skyrim. It's also fully intergrated, so that when it's activated, you're given tutorial instructions in Xbox keys, not WASD. There's a preference in the options menu, though, to allow the controller. Make sure that is toggled. I'm afraid I can't remember off the top of my head which tab it's on in preferences, but I'm sure you can find it.

I don't mean to be insulting but do you have gamepad enabled in the options?

unless fixed with a patch or user(s) has tampered with settings, it is enabled by default.

1. Did you enable the controller in Skyrim? :P
If not, well there you.

2. Drivers should install automatically, if it doesn't for some odd reason, download them manually.

3. If you have a wireless controller then you need the wireless receiver.

There you go.

I vote for option 1 :)

There's your problem, you can't use the play & charge kit (none modded) as far as i know and google knows for the PC.

The plug and play only does power, it is physically incapable of sending data signals from the xbox controller. Your controller is still wireless only. Which means you'll be needing http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows-Pc/dp/B000HZFCT2 or a wired controller. Common misunderstanding, they need to make that clear somewhere on the plug and play kit.
