LoL. Everyone can stop saying "sounds epic". :) There was nothing epic about it. It was literally 3 game days of waiting for a dragon to repeatedly pass by close enough overhead to be tagged with a lightning bolt spell. Watching grass grow in real time is more epic. It's a frustrating, annoying bug.

The most epic dragon fight I had was with a Blood Dragon and a Lich, at once. Stupid dragon crashed the ground and got stuck in the word wall, and when I went to attack it, out popped a lich and a hunter looking for a thief who gave me a shield. Needless to say, I'm being barbecued by the lich and dragon all while the hunter is talking to me. Luckily, the hunter decided to help because I quickly told him I'd seen the thief. He got 1 shotted by the lich, lol.

If he doesn't attack you, just walk away?

He will soon fly off and despawn, causing no pain or problems.

You brought this on yourself, Fact.

And the reason the fight lasted over 3 game days is because the dragon refused to land or attack me until he took enough damage to fall from the sky and crash into the ground. And even after he crashed I was able to stand at his flank 20 yards away and whittle the remainder of his health away with bow and arrow attacks without him making any effort to crawl towards me or breathe at me or any of those other things dragons typically like to do.

I did raise my destruction skill up ~20 points (thanks for that) by zapping him with a lightning bolt every time he flew by (well, every time he flew by close enough for an attempt, and every attempt I actually managed to aim well enough to hit him). Yes, the dragon clearly knew where I was, as he was turning his head to track my stationary position the entire fight. Yes, I was "in combat" with him the entire time - his slowly dwindling health bar was on my screen and his red dot was on my compass. And I'm pretty sure I heard every epic dragon fighting score in the game several times over, enough to get sick of them.

But the dragon simply would not land. Or hover. Or shout his dragon breath weapon. Or attack in any way. He just wanted to fly around my position on wide open terrain endlessly. The sun set, rose, set again, rose, set again, rose, and finally after setting one last time I managed to force him out of the sky, at which point I walked closer (I was encumbered.. a big thank you to the dragon for skidding to a stop 100 yards away and sitting there, making me walk over to him instead; really appreciated that final inconvenience) and put him down and us both out of our misery with many arrows.

We are now at patch 1.3(?) on the PC and this bug (which is nowhere near as "rare" as Bethesda likes to claim it is) is still not fixed, despite the patch notes insisting it is. Please fix it for real. If dragons are going to be the star opponents of your game, you should really make sure they work.

Maybe he wanted a hug?

Would people stop mentioning Dragonrend. You basically have to finish the main quest to get it. Not everyone wants to delve deep into the main quest early on.

You actually only have to do about half the main quest to get it... no where near finishing it in whole. Yeah, that half is more than the regular length of most other questlines, but then the main quest is 8 trophies/achievements, whereas the others (the guilds and the civil war) are only 3 a piece. But that's all beside the point... the point is that people are complaining about Dragons not landing for them, but thats not supposed to be a problem.

You are SUPPOSED to have Dragonrend so that you can make them drop. Its the whole point of its existance. If you don't want to deal with part of the main story to get it, that's fine, but don't go complaining about dragons acting the way they're supposed to if you don't have Dragonrend. It has a purpose, and that purpose is making dragons land so you can kill them easier. Get it if you want dragon fights to move more quickly, don't if you don't. I don't care, just stop complaining about the game acting the way it is suposed to act.

ROFL hell I quite after the first few minutes if the dragon don't land. I'm not taking all day to kill one... Or three for that matter.

But congrats on the battle of endurance! You clearly are a dedicated dragon hunter!

Hah, same here. I just treat the dragons like part of the scenery now unless they land and fight of their own accord. Not worth the wasted time chasing after them.

One word... DRAGONREND... don't have it yet? Play the main quest until you do.
This kind of thing will never happen to you if you have the Dragonrend shout.

Because it ruins your character if you actually role-play in this role-playing game. That's why quite many won't have dragonrend when they face dragons. They want the dragons to be in the game, but they don't want to fight them as the dragonborn, but as an adventurer. Like my current Orc char.

Wow that sounds really cool, I wish a few of my dragon fights would last that long, I seem to kill them so quickly...

This was actually not the case with this dragon. I (obviously) saved during the fight as I wasn't about to lose all that progress on gradually whittling the dragon's health down (I also stopped to cook dinner at one point). As a test I reloaded that save and dumped all my exceess loot on the ground to remove my encumbered state and hoofed it over to the nearest town. The moment I came within visual range of the townsfolk, the dragon (who was orbiting me as I traveled during this test) landed and began to kill the villagers. The dragon was obviously willing to fight, it was just not willing to fight me. That's a bug.

Dragonrend doesn't actually work for me the way it was intended. Whenever I use Dragonrend, the dragon either flies away (as if I'd cast a Fear spell on him or something) or he flies around a bit and then lands somewhere not even close to me so I have go chase it down...

Sounds pretty epic. Reminds me of this battle from this insignificant series...

http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110605120307/lotr/images/8/8c/LOTR_Gandalf_and_the_Balrog_by_Evolvana.jpg

"Neither he nor the Balrog was killed by the fall, and Gandalf pursued the creature for eight days until they climbed to the peak of Zirakzigil. Here they fought for two days and nights. In the end, the Balrog was cast down and it broke the mountain-side as it fell. Gandalf himself died following this ordeal and his body lay on the peak while his spirit travelled outside of Time."

Dude. That was awesome. Thanks for that! :D

I've had several dragons do the whole 'orbital gunship' routine, and then fly off because my arrows couldn't quite reach them. This is not necessarily a bad thing, though, as it often means they have a perch nearby containing a Word Wall. Some don't, though, so they just fly off and disappear.

My first character didn't get Dragonrend until about 130 hours in, but my current one will be getting it a lot sooner than that as part of his RP calls for significant advancement of the MQ (probably won't be finishing it, though). You don't need Dragonrend, per se, however if the dragon attacks in a mountainous area it will need to fly high enough to not hit the highest portion of the range, so can often be out of range of arrows or spells; DR is thus about the only thing you will be able to hit it with so can be very handy. I've managed in some such cases to climb a nearby rock wall and get sufficiently close to pop a couple of arrows into the thing, which often provokes it into attacking instead of circling, but it doesn't always work.

Dragons can't land anywhere, this is normal behavior, you simply aren't picking your location right.

I'm also very annoyed that they added Never Fight The Player to the possible AI routines.

Dragons can land a lot more places than people give them credit for. I've seen them land on houses, rocky slopes, and choose tiny patches of clearing over wide open expanses. There is also always the option of just hovering and attacking using their shouts (which they are perfectly happy to do no matter how perfect the terrain below them is). When they choose to instead just fly around in circles and not attack at all while being attacked, something else is very wrong and it's not the terrain.
