Were any races added to the game?

I am new to the Elder Scrolls games. I have only played Oblivion (which I got in February of this year).
How many races were in the first game? Were there any races added to the games afterwards?
What's the newest race and do you think any new races will be added later in TES series?

If so, what would you like to see?

The races have been the same since Arena, and will continue to be the same. Each race comes from a specific province, and have a hell of a lot of lore behind them, which makes change pretty much a no.

There were only 8 races in Arena and Daggerfall.

Orcs and Imperials were added in Morrowind, making up the 10 races we know today.

gah beaten to it =P. Most of the races in the lore have pretty much always been their but Orc and Imperial were only playable from Marrowind onward.

@lennic

Falmer were in the lore and may potentially have been in marrowind I believe.

Ya guys forgot why Orc and Imperial are there to begin with. Imperial is drop out of nowhere but heavily implied they existed in the world of Daggerfall and Arena. Orc exist in those game as well but got their rank as playable race when
Spoiler
they got control of Megatron one of ending in Daggerfall, kick everyone asses around them, and form a nation.

Falmer-wise, it was mention all the way back in Morrowind, specifically Bloodmoon I assume, but they are all gone, and we now know why they are gone.

If the games were ever to leave Tamriel, perhaps then new races will be added. Then again, I've only ever played a Breton in Oblivion and a Khajiit in Skyrim. I still have to go through all the races.

Nope, one race was added since Daggerfall: The Imperials.

Prior to then, the Bretons, Nords, and Redguards covered every base.

The most likely prospect for a new playable race would probably be the Maormer. Sea/Tropical chamelaon elves. They are somewhat social pariahs as far as the other races are concerned though they have worked with them in the past.

Then the Imga. An ape-like race from Valenwood who practically worships mer and hates humans. They also like to shave their fur and pretend they are mer.

The Akaviri races will likely not be added in as playable for a long time. I could see them being non-playable antagonists though. Would make some sense for an Akaviri DLC as they came hunting dragons before....maybe they land on Morrowind or something?

The games don't necessary have to leave Tamriel to add new races. There are some that exist but were never featured, like Imga; some that live near Tamriel, used to be seen on the continent and could well return, like Maormer and Sload; even some that are probably extinct, but whose return wouldn't break the lore in any way, like Ayleids.
Akaviri invasion isn't unlikely either - Tosh Raka is already planning it... But I don't see them as a playable race, rather as enemies.

If Ayleids were to return, they would probably be a non-playable race, like Falmer. Imga or Maormer, though, are quite viable additions to the established 10 choices.

Hypothetically, theirs Akaviri, Falmer, Dwemer, Goblins, Giants, Ayleids, and whichever Daedra (Dremora notably) qualify that could be out there PC race options. All possessing at least some level of sentience and civilization. And the Forsworn, though they're sort of Bretons.

I wouldn't be against a new playable race being added, so long as all the others were still available. Gotta have my Bretons!

In fact, I would really like to see some Maormer, which we hear so much about but never get to glimpse. I'd also like to see a return of the Sload, not as a playable race necessarily but just to encounter one. Only game we ever saw one in person before was Redguard...

The Dwemer will probably never come back as a full-fledged race...perhaps just a survivor or two like the one we met in a previous Elder Scrolls game.

If we ever went to Akavir, I'd wonder if we could play as Tsaesci.
