A long walk in the country

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 4:01 am

I took a long walk today, almost 4 hrs real time.
I walked the road from Solitute to Rifken going counter clockwise. I didn't stray onto side roads but I did clear out two of the dungeons that were on the main road, took note of others for later.
What a trip!
I must have been attacked by every type of man or beast, caught every disease at least once. Killed two dragons. Went up two levels. I didn't want to fast travel to dump loot so I only picked up the good stuff. I did get to sell it on the way though so I was never over loaded.

So... If you have nothing better to do, go for a walk.

I didn't go looking for trouble but I didn't avoid it.

I did something similiar. I'm inspired to do a pilgrimage from Ebonheart to Dagon Fel, straight across red mountain for memories. It's quite a journey.

This is exactly how I intend to play the game when I get it for Christmas. The whole fast travel component takes away from the realism of the game for me.

Big thumbs up for you! That's how you enjoy this game. This is why it won game of the year.

And now that I have all achievements and mostly everything done, I'm going to not use fast travel and explore a little more.

Cheers

I have done a couple of quests where you can be led across the map by an NPC or two. I hate that they are always running as I see so many things I want to explore. Then I forget about that as I am playing. However, I have a few factions left and then it is Exploration time!!

Problem with walking is my desire to walk everywhere diminishes when nearly every dungeon I stumble upon has a quest tied to it and I don't want to break quest, especially if I'm not joining in on any thieves guild missions.

Nearly every dungeon is tied to a quest? :shakehead: I have come across a few tied to quests and I have cleared several. I could say maybe 1 in 10 are tied to quests but I would be pulling numbers out of my ass. But it would be more accurate than saying nearly every dungeon is.

i walked east and west of whiterun for a long time before, the east ended up to be the adventure of a life time (complete with a raid on tower overlooking a river, a dive into the river to escape insurmountable odds, a trip over a waterfall, a duel on a log over a giant gordge with a river running through it, and a troll)

I did the same thing last night. I've done this in every TES game since Morrowind(Daggerfall was just too darn big lol) and I never get tired of it.

Not really.
I did a few dungeon quests where I had already cleared the dungeon. The re-spawn was light and no real challenge but the Quest Objective was there when needed. It had not been there when I cleared the place on that first non quest visit.

I took my first wilderness journey yesterday, walking from Riften to Whiterun. Encountered a bear the size of a car and that's the last thing I remember... all in all though, it was all moonlight and serenity. Very nice.

Night time is the right time.

I encountered a Master Vampire in a dungeon I entered in Level 1 (was 4 by the time I got to him). I don't care what anybody says I think the Enemy scaling is a good as it can be for this game. No I did not defeat him, but I came back with Sven and some better equipment at Level 6. I did exhaust my potion collection but now Sven performs at the inn with a Steel Battleaxe of Souls on his back. My fellow Nord now has an adventure story that no letter that filth Faendal writes will erase.

I remember my first serious walk- with the companions... I think it was the last quest in the line. It was really exciting at the start. I was also nervous because I had never been that far north before, with the blizzards, glaciers, and iced oceans. not to mention the bears, wolves and horkers would kill me in one shot (master play through), so I had to rely on my friends. Scary as hell I tell you. Sadly, the trip was ruined when pathfinding completly broke and they just paced back and forth in a valley.

Love this. One of the reasons I'm so addicted to the game is episodes just like this.

Though I will admit I do like Faendal lol. He's been my number one companion choice with one of my characters.

I like him too, but my character is forming into a Nord Bard, so I went a different route this time. Plus Faendal and I had a descrepancy over what is mine and what is his....and he couldn't even fight his own battle.

So... If you have nothing better to do, go for a walk.
It's how I play for the most part, whether it be on foot or horse back, I followed Kahjiit traders from Markath to Whiterun, that was quite a crowd though, I had Annekka, and two others in my party that I cannot name because they are spoilers, 8 of us and a horse, made for quite an interesting journey, though I wish the horse walk speed was the same as those on foot, pausing to keep the Kahjiit ahead got a little irritating at times, but it was a fun adventure, when I get the chance I intend to walk with only Annekka across the entire map.

When I started the game I walked to Winterhold and got my room and then did a circuit of the map and found every major city.

So far i've done a Morrowind-ish travel setup where I either go by foot, or take the horse and cart. In some cases I will let myself use fast travel to unload loot but I try to avoid it. Definitely makes the game much more fun for me, there is enough time spent looking at loading screens and menus as is..fast travel makes so that that kind of thing is half the game.

I did something similar...a Nord Skald. But with there being little for my character to do musically, he turned into more of a thief and less of a performer. Hopefully some bard type stuff can be added through the toolkit.

As to the original topic...I found myself fast traveling quite a bit, but when I slowed down and walked from point a to b, the game became so much more enjoyable.

I use fast-travel rarely so I get a lot out of these walks too. So far I haven't even been to the SW area of the map but after I do, I might take a circular walk around the map just to see what I see...a walk-about, right?
