Dungeon Crawling

It's all in the title.

Draugr, draugr and draugr. Maybe skeletons, if you're lucky.

I'm finding them incredibly tedious.

You?

Well , IMO, the dungeons are by far the best thing about the whole game. I absolutely love their individualized 'flavor'. Going into a bandit camp and finding out they are poaching mammoths.... or its set up to be a dog fighting circuit....

Thats the best part of the game to me.

i love dungeon crawling, especially when you enter a seemingly mundane cave just to find out it leads on to a massive ruin or something. there is always that anticipation of "what secrets is that area holding"

Try crawling through a place called Blackreach... you'll get your eyes opened again.
Edit: This place is so massive and dark, combined with extremely lit giant mushrooms, and crystal sparks on the ceiling (very high up), you actually need to grab a torch because the mix of darkness and bright light almost blind your vision. Fantastic place!

I agree with you, that both of those were awesome finds. The majority of dungeons are not like that. They are a simple repetitive blur. Although that is to be expected. Personally I have not gotten bored with the dungeons, although sometimes I do switch character types in the dungeon just to spice it up a bit and give me more of a challenge.

I do think the draugr dungeons can get tedious.
I love the dwemer ruins though, just can't get enough of them. I'm a little sad there are so few of them.

Not really I would like to see more traps and some new kind of traps. Poison gas, poison darts they could be fun. Traps shold also alert nearby enemies. I set off a bear trap while trying to sneak past a guy. he didnt even turn around ti see what the noise was. It is because I'm a table top gamer, and my D&D Dungonmaster LOVED useing traps. I positive it's beacuse he saw just how effective traps can be in real life. He was the primary point-man for his platoon in Vietnam. Most point-men bought it from traps not enemy fire. Shooting just 1 guy gives away you position. Better to let him go by and wait for the 31 others you know are following him.

That is my complant with the dungons they are too well lit up I just cracked the seal on a door that hasnt been opened since the 1E would put all the lit candles in convenlely place spots. Even been caveing its DARK underground.

Ask yourself why you're dungeon crawling in the first place.

Going into a dungeon with no purpose but to kill and loot I agree is boring... its too 'arcady'.

Only go into a dungeon if you have a logical purpose to.

Although the loot is mostly same old, same old.... the dungeons seem uniquely different and I love the detail in each location. Spider holes, morbid crypts, vampire haunts, torture chambers, secret hallowed tombs... each time you enter a dungeon the quest takes a different turn.

I think they did a really good job with keeping it fresh, because dungeon crawling CAN be quite tedious and boring otherwise. I love how there's unique weapons and apparel usually in each one.

The one game where entering a dungeon quickly became extremely boring was in Dragon Age II... they all looked the same, recycled maps with different goals and differently placed enemies.

Yeah, that was just terrible. I can't believe I actually finished the game. Everywhere looked the same in that game.

I just wish dungeons had a more variety of mobs. Always draughr/bandits or falmer/automatons. I would hope they add a larger variety in the future because despite the different dungeons, fighting the same things over and over again does indeed get tedious.

And I would also like them to improve the scare factor of particular dungeons. Perhaps things that crawl on the ceiling? Perhaps darker dungeons with red-eyed shades that follow you in numbers as you progress but dont atack (until certain moment)? Perhaps things that can actually sneak up on you. Just gets tedious of seeing those draughr come out of the coffins all the time. They arent even 'scary' for that matter

I love the dungeons in this game. They are unique enough that I feel like I'm actually exploring. They did a tremendous job, considering there are 150ish dungeons and they reuse a lot of the assets.

I'm a dungeon lover. I go in as fast as I see one. Not everyone prefers spending their time robbing graves, but someone's gotta do the dirty work.

I think Oblivion had a bigger fright-factor in it's dungeons - because of the bigger sense of treading into the 'unknown', not knowing what kind of enemies to expect. Skyrim only gives a little variety, but that doesn't make me dislike pub cr... ehh, cave crawling.

The drauger dungeons do get a tad bit annoying sometimes, but I have come across random quests, puzzles and unique visuals that make it worth while.

It really depends on the dungeon. There's some that are extremely lovely; even dwemer ruins hold beauty. I entered one yesterday, and there was a room with streams of water and rays of light flowing down from the ceiling. Some, however, just don't interest me as much: mostly caves. I still explore them, because some do lead to interesting features.

I've always been a fan of the dungeons, and Skyrim's are fantastic. My only two complaints are that they are very linear, and the exit is usually very close to the entrance. When I say linear, I'm talking about the lack of branching paths or paths that lead to different areas.

I still haven't been there. I'm kind of glad. I think I'll hold off on this one until I get the LAA, so I can push the experience to one inch short of bliss.

I love the dwemer ruins though, just can't get enough of them. I'm a little sad there are so few of them.

They're my favourite dungeons, too. Here's to hoping DLC adds onto these.

[The dungeons] are too well lit up I just cracked the seal on a door that hasnt been opened since the 1E would put all the lit candles in convenlely place spots. Even been caveing its DARK underground.

Yeah, the lighting and food I found in these places was pretty hilarious. If you're looking for a mod (don't know if you're a PC player or not ...) that improves lighting look no further than (Oops I left this out.) There's a guy on skyrimnexus that did an amazing mod. It makes lighting completely realistic. It doesn't do anything to fix light sources, so you're still going to have eternal candles and flames in crypts, but it helps with the mood of the game, a lot. Have a browse through the files released between 10 December and 12 December ... it's a version 13. Sorry, I can't remember its name.

Only go into a dungeon if you have a logical purpose to.

Yeah, my newest character (first female playthrough) is a Joan D'Arc type, except in reverse. Her main mission is to help the Imperials tighten their grip on the region. The whole 'dragonborn' thing is just an inconvenience to her. She's co-opted Farkas into her crazy plans- he's not too clever, you know; he just follows- to help the Empire shackle Skyrim. I'm sure she'll get to fulfilling her destiny once she's sure the Empire's safe. (And I'll probably enjoy the dungeons if I give them a few days'/weeks' rest.)

I think they did a really good job with keeping it fresh, because dungeon crawling CAN be quite tedious and boring otherwise.

I think Bethesda tried. Their success ratio, for me, has been around 1:4. :turned: I'm impressed they did this well. I did not like dungeon crawling in Morrowind or Oblivion, at all, so this is a step up, for me.

I just wish dungeons had a more variety of mobs. [...] Just gets tedious of seeing those draughr come out of the coffins all the time. They arent even 'scary' for that matter

Exactly.

I hear you.

My only two complaints are that they are very linear, and the exit is usually very close to the entrance.

Yeah, it would have been nice if, at least for some of the dungeons, there was more than one way to complete the crawling. There are reasons to do it the way Bethesda's chosen to, but they could have mixed it up a little.

But whatever complaints I may have about Skyrim's dungeons, at least they aren't like-

The one game where entering a dungeon quickly became extremely boring was in Dragon Age II... they all looked the same, recycled maps with different goals and differently placed enemies.

Science that game was awful. Guys, whenever you're dissatisfied with something in Skyrim, just think of DA2. Hahah. It makes you immediately grateful for the stellar piece of gaming that is Skyrim. (<-- See?)
