If i am trying to avoid quests, which houses are recommended

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 10:00 am

I want to avoid as many quests as possible until some future patches are made, to fix bugged quests. However, my Whiterun house is just far too small, without enough storage.

If I want to do the most minimal amount of quests, and stay out of bugged territory, which house should I go for, and why?

Thanks allot in advance.

Another topic on a completely different subject. Forgive me, I didn't know 1 at a time was the limit.

Meric - why do you recommend Riften, exactly?

SPOILERS -

Markarth's quest line is heavy duty

Windhelm's is completely tired into two huge quests (Blood on the ice and the civil war)

At first, I selected Riften because I remember having to help less people than in Solitude. However, on further examination there is also a quest attached to the house in Riften (dealing with the Skooma trade)

So In hindsight Id say the best house purchase quest is Solitude which is basically "help 5 people in Haafingar", ez-pz and pretty unbreakable.

Also the house is better in Sol than in Riften

So Solitude is the safest route? I think I heard about multiple bugs in solitude, is that right?

And I was wondering, when you enter the zone that Solitude is located in, are there any events that occur such as the event of the companions fighting a giant when you walk near the farm outside of whiterun?

Thank you. Just trying to get a house bigger and better than breezehome while staying under the radar as much as possible.

The OP may not be able to buy that house though. He's avoiding quests, so it may take awhile to build up enough money (25k) unless he takes advantage of certain glitches.

I'm curious though, how much stuff are you planning on storing? If you upgrade the house in Whiterun fully, there are a decent amount of containers. You could take advantage of a few (like 3-5) containers in the College of Winterhold by simply passing a test (to gain entry) and then take a tour of the place.

I have breezehome fully upgraded, but I am spacing my items out into individual containers, to keep the lowest amount of items in each container as possible.

The arrangement of items seems bugged, and that makes me uneasy.

I would rather have a container for ingredients, container for mead, ales and wines, container for clothes, container for boots, container for shoes, one for robes, one for weapons only, and so on.

I can manage with breezehome and one other house.

The 25k is fine. I can chop wood and sell crafted items. Patience is my strongpoint.

So, Solitude is the safest route, then all in all?

Ive had a very bug free experience, maybe Im just lucky.

Spoiler
There is a scripted scene of someone being executed, which has a minor quest attached to it but this is true of Markarth as well :X

Your best bet is to head over to the wikias and see what bugs people have encountered and which were game breaking. Since you only have to help 5 random people in the province before you can get the house there is very little that can go wrong that cant be worked around. However, the Riften quest is pretty straight forward.

you might what to look here and see which house best suits your needs

by most accounts Riften's house is inferior to Whiteruns. However, Riftens has a special "to Skyrim" entrance. So if you wanted to avoid people as much as possible that might be beneficial to you.

I have read up on all reported, and known bugs of every kind, and it was entirely exhausting. I do not remember learning much from it, aside from basically avoiding doing quests, and entering/interracting in any quest triggering territories.

I will eventually own every house. But right now, I just want to get the 2nd house with as little quest interraction as possible.

"If you were me" and had the same mindset, and had only gotten the breezehome and done nothing else, what would you recommend?

I own all 5 houses and never encountered any bugs except a small one with Hjerim after I bought it. Solitude house would be least buggiest though. Do a quest for steward, then one for jarl, get 25k, house is yours.

Well when it comes to buying another house, purchasing the one in Windhelm is sometimes impossible due to a bug and the house in Markarth requires completion of at least two quests (and I believe you must be lvl 20). So that leaves you with the houses in Riften and Solitude. I haven't heard of any bugs surrounding either house (except bugs like weapon racks and bookshelves not working properly, but I believe that is unavoidable with the latest patch). The house in Riften and Solitude have 12 and 15 containers respectively, but one is only 5-8k while the other is 25k. If you are a high enough level and you do the quests properly, the house in Markarth is also a good option (it has 28 containers).

Highly possible just raiding bandit mines and tombs... No exploits needed.

Once you take into account... most things you find at low levels is not storage-worthy in the first place.
Quest items, if found, can not be stored, and will linger in your inventory until you get the quest, which may be broken, by just finding the item before getting the quest. (Avoiding quests, yet obtaining a quest item, will break more than getting the actual quest, and doing the broken quest.)
The house in Whiterun does not require doing anything other than talking to the Jarl, then talking to the guy selling the house. I don't recall any associated quests with the purchase.
If you buy the house furnishings... in Whiterun. That gives you three chests, two end-tables, a barrel, a cupboard, and a satchel... You have more storage than most shop-keepers have.

The least critical quests are the MISC quests, which still break, when they fail to clear, or fail to create/spawn the random item you are sent to find. Or you get the item, and they fail to remove it. Many of those will just build and build and build, until you have a bunch of things which never go away.

Just assume the whole game is broken, (though it is only like 5%), and use this character as a learning tool, or a scout. Find your play-style, that you like, and build your next character, when the patches are out, with your collected knowledge.

I can understand your feeling and fear for bugs, since I have a similar point of view expecially in TES games. However I suggest you what I'm doing myself, enjoying the game as it is with a build following my rpg tastes, don't worry too much about quests and doiing more things possible to explore the game well personally. Then, when all things will magically be fixed, with patches mods etc and you will have your personal Skyrim, create the final toon, or go on with this if nothing too much bad has occured.

I think only with playing the game we can see how really the game works and what better to do later, if a new game or what.

That is what I plan to accomplish by watching my wife play, lol. She doesn't care about bugs or glitches, or completing quests. She just loves running around, laughing, and giggling over fish jumping. I will probably learn a great deal by watching her play on the other Xbox in the spare room.
