Is using Faendal's house for storage safe?

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 9:01 pm

I have been using Faendal's house temporarily until I can get to Whiterun and purchase Breezehome. So far, I have not had any problems with inventory disappearing or storage container's respawning.

when I sleep in his bed (all of this of course after getting him as a companion), I get the well rested bonus.

So does the game treat his house as being my house?

I also found an abandoned shack near Pinewatch, with 2 charred corpses out front. I get the well rested bonus when I sleep in that bed as well. There is a chest and a closet in this dump. Is this safe to use also?

Good question. I used Ulthgerds (sp), from the tavern in whiterun, house after she died and my items were marked stolen when I went to get them a few days later. She got the last laugh.

Never had an issue like that. I just asked Faendal to trade with me, took his key, and unlock it everytime. It is constantly locked, even though neither me, nor Faendal ever locks the door. Lol.

But he never objects to me unlocking it.

Every time in his house after getting him as my companion counts as being mine. Nothing stolen once looted.

Dont know about fandals house but you can return to burnt out helgen (starter location with the dragon attack) and in the destroyed inn theres a wardrobe in the rubble and an end table near a functioning bed that are confirmed safe. You′ll live like a hobo but your stuff will be safe :D

I left some items in the companions' guildmaster's chest in his bedroom after completing the quest line, only to return one day and found all of it gone. The cleaning lady must have jacked it :(

Is that really confirmed? Also, isn't there a quest, or quests related with returning to Helgen? I returned there before, and it was taken over by bandits, and there was a bandit leader in the keep with a leveled sword.

And I am really trying to avoid doing anything quest related.

I've never seen confirmation that Faendal's house is safe. Be careful, it could be on a long respawn (30 days in game) which makes it appear safe and then a long time from now you will lose everything.

I think the abandoned shack (if it is the same one) has been confirmed as safe. There is a list on UESP wiki of the confirmed safe containers, maybe on the page regarding houses?

What is the most commonly talked about abandoned shack? Wherever it is/whatever it is - I definitely prefer to use it.

Could someone tell me, or give me a link? That would be deeply appreciated.

Until we get out hands on the editor, the mystery of what containers are safe will remain. However, the way it is supposed to work is friends houses are to be treated like you own. As for places out in the woods, again, those should be safe as long as no containers are marked as owned by someone else.

As the game has a 30 day reset timer, the best way to test this is to put something unimportant in the container and wait 31 days and see if it is still there. Waiting 31 times would be tedious, so you could just have your character stand somewhere while you eat lunch or watch a show and the time should pass. Problem is you have to figure out real time what a game day takes. I have seen calculations from 48 minutes to 72 minutes. It seems shorter than that to me.

Anyway to test a container, wait 31 game days.

That is the biggest issue outside of re-spawning containers is transferring ownership. Basically, if the container is owned by someone else, then what ever you put in there will be considered stolen when you take it out. Not sure if it is immediate or takes some game time for this.

Well what about this "abandoned shack" that I keep hearing about, but can't get information as to its whereabouts? Has it been tested and confirmed?

I had this problem in Oblivion too, and what made the difference for me was whether or not the container was specifically designed to contain something unique. If I left things in cupboards or barrels then they would disappear, I had to find chests that contain the same item in every game and do not replenish/randomize. In Oblivion, the best place for me to do this was in the dark brotherhood headquarters because you can use all of the member-specific chests which are not randomized.

Is it really necessary to keep making new threads each time you find somewhere you want to use as a house, just let yourself do one measly quest to get a proper one, the game really isn't that buggy.

The majority of players get through every quest they try without problems, and besides even in a few months time when Skyrim has been patched fully it still won't be 100% bug free, both Oblivion and Morrowind still had numerous bugs even after multiple patches, hence players making their own patches.

Just play the game and stop spamming the boards with the same question about playing the game without doing quests.

Now that is a bit harsh. Some of these questions are valid. For example when I finish the companions questline
Spoiler
and become harbinger of the companions and take over Kodlak's chambers, in which the items are no longer marked as being owned by someone else
I would like to know whether I can store weapons in the display cases or chests. (I own two houses btw)

You are not the first person I've heard using this barrel. Do you know if you've been using it for more than 30 days? I'm guessing you don't.

RB2610 - it is really creepy that you make the comment that you made. I have created a grand total of 3 topics in the past 56 hours, when I first joined. All 3 of my topics are spaced hours apart. It is surprising, and disturbing and borderline stalker behavior on your part. I don't know you. Stop trying to act like a moderator. If you don't like my topics, don't read them. You are never going to change the way a perfect stranger thinks, by telling them how to behave when you've never even been introduced before.

Also, "the game isn't that buggy". Are you some kind of fool? Do you even read the topics posted on this forum, or just mine?

Safe Containers

* Containers in purchased or rewarded homes are almost always "safe".
* The wardrobe in Riverside Shack.
* The chest located in the basemant of the Sleeping Giant Inn.
* The end table located in the Alchemist's Shack

Do not assume anything!!!

When you are thinking about using somewhere as storage then SAVE. Put something inside the container (like 1 gold), travel elsewhere, wait perhaps 35 days, return to see what happened, then regardless of the outcome revert to the save. This takes about 20 minutes so if you cannot be bothered to do it you really do not deserve free containers...

One character I play is an outlaw and cannot rely on houses in towns. Hence I need bases out in the wilderness from where to hatch my nefarious plans.

Two examples;

1) This character married Gilfre thinking great, two free houses away from towns, except using the above method I determined only the chest, wardrobe and sack outside (Gilfre's House) were safe. Everything else resets, although items you drop (in the Worker's House) appear to remain there. Even though the sack outside indicates you are stealing from it I have not had a problem storing items there (beyond 30 days) and to my knowledge they are not being tagged as stolen.

2) Gilfre's house did not particularly suit this character, so I tried Anise's shack (after killing her when she attacks you for using her cellar). Again, using the above method I determined everything in the area was safe EXCEPT the barrel upstairs. Let me be clear about this! You get TWELVE safe containers, an Alchemy Lab an Enchanting Lab, and a bed, for free, out in the middle of nowhere. Presumably you would only live somewhere this isolated if you were, uh, bad to the bone, so also note that you can jump onto the steeper rock ledges near this place and kite the thugs/assassins that inevitably come on account of your pilfering (useful at low levels). You can creep into Riverwood (at night) to use their forge, tanning rack, workbench and grindstone. A smelter is harder to get access to but there is apparently one outside a mine some ways to the west beyond the lake.

Obviously Skyrim being Skyrim, issues may yet occur with this place, so I will report back here in future if I find anything amiss. Long story short, CHECK containers before using them. Have fun with that shack but CHECK IT AGAIN YOURSELF BEFORE USING IT. You never know, right? :)

There are 2 threads by you on the first page, that doesn't take any 'stalking' to notice, jeez.

Could you not have just asked this in the other thread?

And yes, there are lots of people complaining on the forum, but go on the forum for any game and there will be pages upon pages of complaints and criticisms for various reasons.

Forum users make up a small amount of players and a large amount of users will come onto the forums to seem help if they come across a bug, the many people who play the game without issues will never use the forums due to not needing to ask for advice.

Generally more people who have a complaint to make will use a forum for a game then people who are having no issues.

Well not exactly...

First I save, then I leave the zone (as for whatever reason the containers might not reset if you are standing next to them). Then press START to pause the game and check the in-game date, for example, it might be 27th Frostfall. Now press the BACK button and wait 24 hours. This takes about 30 seconds of real time. Doing this 35 times will probably take some 15 to 18 minutes real time (just guessing here). At this point the in-game date ought to be something like 30th Sun's Dusk, but you cannot miss this given you will be forced to watch the date counting down in 35 blocks of 24 hours. Once you waited 30 in-game days (and then some) fast-travel back to the containers you are testing. Observe the results. Reload save.

The whole process of travelling elsewhere, waiting/sleeping 35 x 24 hours, then travelling back, ought to take you some 20/25 minutes of REAL TIME. I mean you wouldn't just sit there and wait for time to pass 'naturally'? Hell no, speed it up by deliberately waiting in blocks of 24 hours (BACK button) :D

Waiting will take about 20 minutes. Just standing there will take a while.
