Question reg: 2nd Toon & saved games

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 2:04 pm

Hi folkes....I have my first toon up to lev 30, was thinking of creating another, as Ive read here many people have several. So my question is can I create a 2nd character without losing my current one or screwing up saved games? Or can we just have one at a time...just curious how this works cause I dont want to start a warrior and find out i lost my mage! thanks :)

Better back-up your save before making another character. Which platform are you on?

On PC, the saves you request get names like "Save 45 - your_toon_name_here Dustman's Crypt 15.04.15.ess". The toon's name is included in the file name so it's easy to identify what saves are for what toon.

The autosaves are another matter. They have names "autosave1.ess", "autosave2.ess" and "autosave3.ess" and these three file names appear to be used in rotation. Good luck keeping track of what saves are for what toon in this case.

If you always load from an explicit save rather than just clicking continue, you might be OK, but I still think tagle's suggestion of backing up your save folder beforehand is worthwhile.

You can make another character (not a toon, this ain't wow lol ) it can overwrite the auto saves but the manual saves won't be affected. the save count will continue but the info for each save will tell you which is which. i personally do five saves per character so i know exactly how many there are for each and keep track of it better.

LOL, guess you can see I spent some time on WoW as well. Personally I don't find the term toon offensive, although the developers of the game might feel that it insults the realistic character art they have created.

Haha Agreed. And if it matters...I am playing on PC . I will make a copy of my save game folder as it is now...and go from there. Hmm...hope Steam does not hinder me from accessing the save game folder?

Damn..I cant seem to access the saved game folder thru the steam folder.....I can find the Skyrim folder in the Steam folder, but no saved games. May i'll google to figure this one out, lol.

And toon is just what mmo players call a character in game. Dont ask me why though, as I have no clue. Always did think it sounded rather stupid to be honest.

You should be able to find your saves in [wherever_your_My_Documents_folder_is]\My Games\Skyrim\Saves

"Toon" is short for cartoon.

If your on a PC you can create named saved games. Lets say your characters name is "Agonyengine".

1) Hit the tilde key to open the console. this one ----> ~
2) type "save Agonyengine" with no quotes
3) hit the enter key
4) hit the tilde key again to close the console

I have 3 characters right now and I keep 3 named saves for each one. Some people say you cant get achievements when you use the tilde key, but this not true, at least for saves. Not all keyboards have the tilde key, it depends what country you are from, and I cant remember what the other key is to open the console sorry.
