Archer/mage character creation

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 9:43 pm

Hello,

I want to start all over again, with a new character.
(last one was a nord with 1h/shield)

Now i was thinking to make me an archer with some magic skills.
(like summon a pet, or whatever (with 1h/shield i never used my mana))

So i want to use a bow as main weapon, and use some magic with it.
I've not been around so long to test all kind of things and or using spells at all.
But i though it will be a funny mix.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a Archer/mage build?
What shoud i take, what are usefull skills to get, etc...

I am not a stealth player, ofc i will duck once a while.
So what will be the best? (skills and perk wise and what character should i choose)

Thank you.

My own build:

Spoiler

Major: Conjuration/Archery/Illusion
Minor: Sneaking/Light armor/Enchanting

250 health at lvl 40, rest into magic. +% bow damage enchants mostly.

Its a stealth build (Invisibility/Muffle/Silent casting from illusion), but you can also completely ignore that part, as it is very flexible. You can go in guns blazing with 2 summons out if you want to, or sneak around and instagib people in the back, your call. Personally I like to play the puppeteer: invis in, aoe frenzy, double summon, invis out. From there either grab a popcorn or pop Slow Time + Bound Bow and massacre everyone.

so for me it will be:

- Archery
- Light armour
- Conjuration
- Enchanting

Do i need mana? becouse i am just after the summon "pet" skill, so that i dont have to fight alone. (followers are a pain)
If not, then how should i spend my points, 2:1 health:stamina or more like 4:1 ?

Just looking for a few good suggestion so that i dont need to start all over again.

Don't go the sneaking route with archery. It's too overpowered and will get really boring really quick.

My Breton will go archery + conjuration + alteration + enchanting. No need to perk light-armor as you won't be getting hit much at all, and you can always cast the alteration armor spells in a pinch. He'll have magic resistance from his racial trait and from the alteration perks which will make him strong against casters.

hmm got a few new questions:

Is blacksmith good to take for an archer?
And how do u train conjuration (without spending gold for it) becouse the flame pet needs 132 mana, and the dog less but the dog dies in like 3 a 4 hits?

Becouse i dont want to spend alot of point on mana, i want the novice perk in conjuration so the anarch is cheaper to cast.

Also what summoned creature is best to take (strongest)?

Thanks.

With pets you very VERY rarely get hit as AI seems to seek them (and your poor horse T_T) first. You do, however, need hefty magic. Nothing like having them kill your summon, pulling another one in panic only to reallize you are out of mp to resummon your bow hahaha. Personally at 250 health (with gear, i have + hp on chest) at level 40 is fine. I get 1shot by the odd trap every now and then, but otherwise im all good.

Smithing is good if you need a weapon. If you intend to conjure your own (Bound Bow), then no, its not really worth it at all.

As for training conjuration:

Spoiler
Conjuration levels up a little when you use bound weapons, but mostly its from summoning things in combat. That includes weapons, so what you can do is aggro something melee and just kite him around a piece of terrain (like a rock or a tree), keeping it between you 2. As you run, just spam bound swords, and you'll level it really fast. I dont suggest doing that, however, because that will give you a ton of levels (and the ennemies), but your archery will still be abysmal and you wont be able to kill anything.

Also what summoned creature is best to take (strongest)?

Spoiler
Daedra Lord, hands down. Storm Thrall (atronach) for ranged.

I'm thinking of a similar build for my next character (Archery, Conjuration, Alteration, Enchanting, and just enough crafting to make and upgrade Elven Armor).

Summon Bow is a higher level spell though, and I won't have enough magicka to summon it right from the start. I don't even think it shows up for sale first off all.
So what would be better: using a normal bow and a pet until I have a high enough Conjuration Skill for the summon bow, or use pet and summoned sword until my Conjuration is high enough and level Archery later?

With BS u can make bows too? nice to know. And the conjured bows do they do good dps or is a normal bow better?

Conjured bows are as good as non-upgraded Deadric bows AFAIK. So for most of the game they'll be better then what you can find/make. But a fully upgraded and enchanted Deadric bow would be better.

Ok, then ill go for a normal bow, make them with bs, and shoot real arrows. In my eyes conjured bow sounds like to easy gameplay for me. (i love the oh no moments when running out of arrows :) )

I went the sneaky archer route, and it is, indeed, OP as hell once you have a good bow and high sneak. In fact, I stopped using Conjuration altogether, which didn't bode well for my Mystic Archer RP.

I'm currently working on another sneaky archer (a no-magic thief), but my next one will be more 'out in the open' and will get a lot more use out of Conjuration. One thing I recommend doing to level Conjuration early on is bypassing the Familiar and going straight for the Flame Atronach (Farengar sells the spell book). You'll need either additional magicka or the apprentice-level perk to cast it, as its base cost is about 135 or so, but it's a lot more durable than the familiar and can hold its own against multiple opponents at once for quite some time.

You'll want the +range perks in Conjuration ASAP; they let you cast the atronach/dremora a goodly distance ahead, which is a great way to spring traps and trigger ambushes. You'll also want to lay in a supply of stimulants, because once you have the dual-summon perk all you'll need to do is call up two Dremora Lords and watch the carnage. If the opponent is a Dragon use atronachs instead, since Dremoras don't have ranged attacks. Make sure to match the atronach to the dragon type (most use Fire breath), since they have 100% resistance to their own element. Yes, this means the atronach's damage will svck, because the dragon resists its own type too, but that's where your bow comes in.
