SKyrim made the BBC news

Post » Sat Dec 17, 2011 12:32 am

For all that are interested.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16136691

Also mentions the woes with the PlayStation

and a most interesting morsel

"In one month, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is just about half a million units shy of matching Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in lifetime sales. Its first month performance was a five-fold increase over Oblivion's first months sales."

PS: Pls keep this flame- and console-war free. Thanks

really, what sequel isnt breaking sales records? it really bothers me how many pre-orders a game can get nowadays... thats basically telling them they could stop making the game right then and there because they already have your money. we gamers succumb to hype so easily its no wonder we get so few original IPs.

Dear lord... that is just saddening.

The closest thing to a real reward for video games is the developers choice one.

I'm glad. As I have said before (And I believe it bears repeating) despite the bugs, Skyrim is the best game I have ever played. With the magnitude and scope of such a massive game, bugs are to be expected. Some are annoying, some are frustrating, and some make me mad. But the game overshadows those issues. Idk how you do it Bethesda, but you do it well.

Uh... I assume you bought Skyrim and playing it, so you supporting non original IPs. I thought TES was an original IP. You want Bethesda to stop TES and make something else? Just curious what you mean by "few original IPs".

How is this Beth's fault?

I'm happy for Beth despite being disappointed in some of their decisions. I hope they don't sleep on the wheel for TES6 because the way things are now they might make Tomb Raider run for their money.

The developers are chasing $ for sure. They're a business. But they're giving people what they're asking for. If there is a lack of originality, it is lodged firmly in the mind of the average gamer.

This is not meant to reflect on you or anyone in particular, only that devs have no choice but to make stuff that sells. We're not going to see more originality in the industry until gamers start demanding original games. I know from a few years of mod-making that the cry for originality among gamers is virtually nil. (Oh, sure, they talk about how great it is, but never seem to be around when you propose something that isn't horribly cliched.) I can't tell you how many interesting concepts I've seen rise and fall over the years with 0 support from the community because it wasn't already part of an established franchise. If I were a developer and I didn't have to (eg. indies breaking into the industry) I wouldn't touch an original IP with a thousand foot poleaxe.

Oblivion was hyped as well. What with the countdown video releases etc. This time round I stayed out of the forums and websites months in advance so I avoided all the hype. Yes there are bugs, yes there are things I would want to be different but I am trying to enjoy what I have and see what's next.

It's funny because the gamers are always to blame when it comes to hype. One little thing Beth says and people go crazy over it and word gets around.

Ever notice how pretty much every major release (I'd go as far as to say 95%) this year has been a sequel? You're more like to pre-order a game that you basically already played before and liked rather than a completely new game.
