The "New" Game Engine

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 8:34 pm

Since this isn't really a *new* game engine, and Skyrim doesn't really do anything Besthesda hasn't done before, why is it that Skyrim performs so poorly? Was there a deadline to meet before some other Elder Scrolls like game was released? No, there wasn't. The only deadline I can see is the November deadline to get the game into circulation for holiday shopping.

I'm posting this because I am sick to death of Skyrim crashing. Every single time I play the game, it crashes to desktop without any reason why,

so i took the disk, put it in my xbox, closed the disk tray, and it started, no crashing or lagging.
no issues 100 hours in, i am in the vast majority, therefore there is no blame to pass around.

Since Xbox has no desktop to crash to, why are you replying to this post?

Check your hdd's got spare space, a lot of 360's crash and hang when space is getting low.

But as for PC, check out the PC tweaks like the LAA work around and the ini tweaks. Also try doing a "clean boot" and testing the games stability that way to rule out background program interference.

Dont know what to tell you. Do a defrag and make sure your drivers are up to date?

I'm on a 4 year old PC and play on ultra with no problems, so it may be something other than the game.

Uhh, I never let Steam *not* update. None of the patches they have done has stopped random CTDs. I love Skyrim but I am sick to death of the game crashing for no reason, I have to suspect that you don't plasy that much...

Yeah, I don't know. I find it hard to believe it's a "new" engine. It's Oblivion with different graphics. Or Fallout with different graphics. Maybe that's part of the problem.

I've found it far, far less buggy than Oblivion's engine in my experiences. Perhaps it's an issue with your hardware?

I don't get it, do you just not care and reload when the game crashes inexplicably? I'm very tired of you guys that chime in in Bethesda's defense with pointless instructions like "update drivers" or "defrag" which are completely not the problem. The problems are 100% in the game's seemingly completely lazy coding.

If it was in the coding, we'd all be experiencing the same issues. I haven't had the game crash on me once.

Bethesda said it was a revamped Gamebryo engine. Also, don't assume that an engine handles purely visuals. There is a lot of new stuff introduced this time around that they have spoke about numerous times. Things like improved A.I. and the newer Radiant Quest implementation which allows your quests to send you to new areas you haven't been to, according to what you have and have not discovered yet.

There is a lot under the hood in Skyrim. Visually it's better than Oblivion ever was.

Mine freezes randomly, and permanently. Didn't really happen until 1.3 came out. I still play the [censored] out of the game though, not gonna let a few cntl+alt+del's get in my way of fun.

And honestly...new engine can be new but the same in most ways...they're only going to change so much about a successful game franchise.

So, me with probably one of the most typical PC gaming setups there is with a quad core AMD processor and nvidia graphics card, I am alone with the game constantly randomly crashing? I think not.

This brings me to another point I am sick of, and that is the anonymous posting of game developers/publishers on their on forums. I know it's free and unrefutable word-of-mouth advertising, but don't you think you should drawn the line somewhere?

Lolwut? You serious? finished means polished and big free to a reasonable extent, Skyrim is neither of those. Especially for PS3 and PC users.

As technology advances, the increase in potential disaster does as well. Just be thankful we receive patches to fix the bugs.

Ok, you obviously didnt read my post (the one you replied to in the above qoute), if you did you would have seen the part about having no problems and not replied with "do you just not care and reload when the game crashes inexplicably". But your probably right, since most of us don't have problems with the game and have tried to help it must be "The problems are 100% in the game's seemingly completely lazy coding.".

Then there's this from you "This brings me to another point I am sick of, and that is the anonymous posting of game developers/publishers on their on forums. I know it's free and unrefutable word-of-mouth advertising, but don't you think you should drawn the line somewhere?" So if anyone disagrees with you they work for Bethesda? Sounds like you came here to troll or your tin foil hat fell off or both.

So good luck finding answers to your problem when you want to argue with everyone who trys to help.

Xbox 360 user here. I have a 250GB Xbox 360 with less than 4GB of space left on my hard drive and Skyrim hasn't "crashed" on me once in over 140 hours of gameplay. I've experienced bits of lag when running from a dragon and leading it into heavily populated areas, but that's about the extent of the problems I've had with this game.

I used to be big into PC gaming a few years back and I always found that if you're having trouble with a game running properly it's on your end. It's not the devs fault and it's not the publisher's fault.

I read your post and it meant absolutely nothing. Because you don't play the game enough to experience the constant crashing means there isn't anything wrong with the game, right? You are NOT in the majority and I doubt you are even speaking the truth. There are COUNTLESS other games that do not CTD without any reason and do not have posts, which BTW has *1200* replies, from the developers on the tech support forums asking for complete details, like it was a beta forum, about why the game crashed.

Like I said in my OP, this is NOT a new engine, there should NOT be this many problems with the game...

Your right over a hundred hours isnt much in a game like this, but I still stand by what I said about not having problems with the game. And btw if it was constant crashing, hours of gameplay wouldn't matter. Anyway, I've got you figured as a troll, could be wrong but I dont care at this point, so I'm out and good luck with finding a solution.

Yeah, and I've got you figured as a fan-boy at this point and I really couldn't care either. Anything someone posts that isn't mindless praise HAS to be by a troll, right? I really do hate what the internet has "evolved" into.
