Impossible to play as a Necromancer.

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 9:39 pm

I have tried playing as a Necromancer, only following the undead perks etc, but found this to be next to impossible as the majority of times the re-animated corpse will act too stupidly and not make it into combat before its 60 seconds are up. This also makes open world travelling as a Necromancer difficult, as if you were jumped by a random encounter as a conjurer, you could just summon a follower to help, but as a Necromancer, I am forced to rely on another tree (such as destruction) to bail me out.

Could an instant cast 'summons' be added that would be 'RP' for those of us trying to be a Necromancer and not a "Pewpew" mage? I know I could just summon a wolf or a flame atronach, but Id rather stick to how a Necromancer would be..

You can resurrect a permanent zombie, if not two.

Id have thought they would be more disease/poison/lifetap based spells. I didnt think it was fitting to be throwing around fireballs :)

This is what I want to know.

What happened to Conjuring Skeletons? Seriously, the most basic conjuring spel there is...where is it? What kind of Necromancer can't conjure a skeleton? The player, that's what kind, because NPC's do it all the time.

What gives Bethesda? Where are my skeletons?

Well there is certainly a "Lifetap" spell; Equilibrium from Alteration. Relying on one school magic just won't work especially not with the limited spell list in Skyrim.

NPC's [conjure skeletons] all the time.

Is that right? Admittedly, I tend not to pay too much attention to these things, but I have been under the impression that NPC necromancers animate skeletons which are already lying around.

Lots of classes require support trees, in fact all of them do.

Regular animated dead shouldn't have a limit on the number you can have at once.
I think it would make necromancy a little more viable.

There is even already a power that circumvents the summon limit when raising undead!

So once the creation kit comes out, I'm sure it can be done.

Huh...that might actually be right, but I swear I've seen one conjure a skeleton from thin air at some point. Regardless, it's a no brainer when it comes to spell ideas, I was baffled to find it's not in the game.

Oh well, just another thing to add to my "Will mod when CK is out" list.

My mage (first and main character) actually feels like how I think a fledgling mage would feel like. I was definitely a novice when I thought I could get by on primarily Destruction. If you want to be all-powerful (a necromancer who didn't might actually be creepier) you are going to have at least dabble in the ways of other schools.

I'm with you there. It'd definitely make playing a necromancer a more attractive proposition as far as I'm concerned.

Well if it helps, if I get around to modding Skyrim then I will add a spell that does exactly that, possibly one timed and one permanent or something like that, it shouldn't be very difficult. Obviously I'd then have different spells for summoning different types of skeleton, 1h+shield, two hander, archer etc.

There is a life-steal spell, if you are willing to become a vampire necromancer.

yea, necromancy isnt really viable compared to plain old summoning; cause firstly you need a dead body. Secondly, the body is raised extremely slowly. And yea they have all the stupidities of followers.

with regards to some of the posts above about using destruction and other schools, you must not forget what necromancers are: mages who choose to dabble in the black arts, raise undead beings and such, so they allready have the skills of the regular mages.

My necromage used the

Spoiler
Skull of Corruption, drains dreams to get 50 damage aoe projectiles. Also don't forget to soul trap and recharge, stealing souls could count as a necro activity

It both looked the part and did enough damage to let me reanimate the victims.

Sad but true even a warrior in Skyrim MUST learn magic or else you suffer if you compare weapon dmg output prime example: enchanted blade of woe deals over 200 dmg my lvl36 Nord deals 100 dmg with a two hander (legendary Skyforge Steel/Glass) (2h skill 98 battleaxe perk 3/3)

Eh don't worry about it, anyone who enchants a backstabbing weapon that high is just wasting damage on it. Backstab already will kill anything in the game even using a weapon like a plain ol steel dagger, so the rest of the damage on that BoW isn't doing much.

Stick with your Skyforged steel, like a true Nord! My Nord is going to see through expert difficulty in iron armour, banded iron shield and a Skyforged steel sword just because he is a badass. Leave that fancy ridiculous damage to the minmaxers.
