Erased character

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 6:56 pm

I had a Nord warrior level 35 or so with different perks and weapons, and it was going great. However, I wanted to try another type of character, so I chose a dunmer assassin. While I was playing,I found out that it was autosaving, although I din't save a slot yet, since it was the beginning of the game. However, when I looked at my different characters, my Nord had dissapeared! What just happened? This is [censored] if I can't get him back, because I didn't save with my assasin yet, and it still erased my other character. Can someone help or give any advice please?

Thanks :shakehead:

Autosaves are not character specific.

Tough break, but nothing you can do about it.

You're going to have to be more specific. Are you saying it overwrote your Autosaves (implying that was the only way you were saving, which is just NOT a good idea) or that it erased the hardsaves?

I seem to recall someone else mentioning that their hardsaves got wiped by starting a new guy.

Either way your Nord is gone.

I had similar happen. I deleted saves. Left two, my main one and the 1st one at character creation I made. Somehow the 1st save duped over my main. Save so they oth loaded at the character creation part. I had 60 hours played. I felt like crap but moved on. Se la vie.

This happened to me. When I started a new game it automatically overwrites your last save, It seems to happen just before character creation. So I have a save before then then afterwards I create a new save just to be on the safe side.

Unfortunately you need to keep proper save slots for your characters as the auto saves and quick save overwrite themselves. If having tens of saves bugs you (as it does me) just keep three manual saves in addition to the auto saves. And if you're on the PC then it's best to keep separate characters in separate save folders.

As someone else has stated -- and from a NWN loading screen: Save early. Save often.

Also, sometimes there is mouse lag and you can inadvertently oversave the wrong file. This has happened to me so make sure you verify you have the file you want with the thumbnail description.

If you're not on PC, I recommend saving thrice at important stages, to avoid most over-writing issues; I've heard of it occurring even on non-quicksaves.
If you are on PC, I recommend making plenty of backup folders. My paranoia also recommends keeping secondary backup folders in the backup folders, but you can ignore her.

if you are on PC idunno.

. I don't play the other platforms so I can't speak about them, but this isn't a problem on PC. On PC we are able to make full saves and play multiple characters. These full saves are never over-written.

Remember children, PC version makes a backup of your previous save when overwritten. So if you accidentally overwrite your Nord with Breton, you can still find your Nord.
