Rogue/Jack-of-All-Trades Perk Suggestions

Post » Sat Dec 17, 2011 5:17 am

I'm at level 47, with 6 unused perks saved up, and I'm not sure what to spend them on. Suggestions welcome!

Basically, I created this character to be a rogue, but still capable of roleplaying my way through every guild quest as a sort of jack-of-all-trades (or a smiling megalomaniac, if you prefer). The thing is, while I felt like I wanted more perks than I could fit back when I was playing a wizard, now I feel like I got exactly what I wanted and there's not a lot else I really need. Now I'm just wondering what's fun, if not necessary. So far I've got:

One-Handed: All damage perks, all 3 bladesman perks, all dual-wielding perks, and the perk for standing power attacks. I don't ever seem to do backwards power attacks and I only do running power attacks by accident. Are those perks fun, though?

Archery: Just about all of them.

Light Armor: The whole right side, with a couple extra Agile Defender, and saving up for the last one. Skipping "matched set," and I'm not sure I really need need to max out Agile Defender (but maybe it's not a bad idea, as I like using suboptimal armor for appearance's sake).

Sneak: The right side of the perk tree. Nothing on the left so far. Is it worth putting some perks in there just to be able to roll around and hide from opponents from afar? I know some armor negates the usefulness of these perks, but I'm not really wearing that armor much because I got tired of being dressed as Batman/Moon Knight.

Illusion: Just got up to the silent casting perk.

For roleplaying's sake, I considered some Pickpocket perks, but I never really remember that picking pockets is an option, and I have plenty of cash anyway. I considered Alchemy, too, even if just to get double hits on poison and max out poison resistance (playing a Bosmer), but I don't really make that many potions/poisons. Also have considered Block, but it's sadly mutually exclusive with dual wielding. Also considering Alteration just for passive bonuses, or even Destruction just to specialize in paralyzing people with frost, though I plan to get the Paralyze spell eventually anyway…

I have actively NOT put anything into Enchanting or Smithing on this character simply because I feel like it makes the game too easy to be fun for me, but I may just take Steel Smithing and Arcane Blacksmith just to make some of the suboptimal gear I enjoy using best slightly more viable.

So what perks are FUN, if not superpowered to make the game really easy?

EDIT: Jeez, I need to drink less coffee late in the day. Apologies for the wall of text.

Maybe think about Block again :) I know it's not compatible with dual-wield, but since you're looking for fun, not optimisation, a bit of redundancy isn't that bad. Personally, I find one-handed with a shield to be a really fun combat style. It's tactical, and the perks are really neat. If using a shield doesn't fit with your aesthetic or character concept, that's another story, though.

I am leaning in that direction just for the sake of variety. I guess it's not entirely redundant with dual wielding, either, as sometimes it makes more sense to have crazy damage output, and sometimes it's smart to have some protection. And after the fight I just had with the Elder Dragon who refused to land, having 50% fire resistance from a shield is looking a lot more attractive. Thanks for the tip. :)

100 pickpocket, steal peoples pants. You could completely clean a shop out, i mean all of it, everything and just leave the owner with nothing but a bucket on their head,
Or the sneak tree, get the silent roll and shadow warrior, they seem like they could be fun for abit.

Pickpocket is worth it just for Extra Pockets.

And having several thousand Steel Arrows or 500 Lockpicks doesn't hurt either.

Left branch of the sneak tree is actually very useful. Silent rolls (apart from the jerky animation) are great when you need to get from one shadow to another quickly (the guard turned around or something). I also thought that it's useless at first, but I learned to use it over time.
Shadow warrior is also very good. It gives you a second chance to stab someone if you screwed up first time, or the target simply survived. Being a rogue usually means that you have lots of stamina, so you can easily outrun your enemies. When things are getting bad, you can always run for it and go into sneak mode. Not to mention the "frontstab" bug, when you can go into sneak mode during a normal fight and do a sneak attack.

Alteration is also a good choice.
