Strange. I recall quite a few posts complaining about the lack of information, screenshots, and information updates of any kind. People predicting that no new information would be released until after certain events.

I seem to have missed the non-stop hype. YMMV, of course.

Too much info = Overexcited = Expectations not met = This
Not enough enough info = Not excited = No expectations = This, but was depending on the direction Bethesda took with "warning" = Or no sales due to no info.

Bethesda is a company.
Companies exist to make money.
Advertising means more money.

It worked.

lol
Quoted for truth.

This is exactly it: we as gamers like to believe that we're special, and even more so if we REALLY love the game and say so. Then we're "fans" of the game-- perhaps even "loyal fans", and that makes us more important...than money? No. In the end, we're numbers. How many sales, how many millions of dollars. Sorry, but it's true. Companies exist to make money. Period. :)

Yes. Companies do exist to make money. However, software is one of the few "non-tangible" products that you can't return to the vendor. You might as well stamp it with a disclaimer that states :: Not responsible if product does not work at this point in time. A patch is on the way.

Bethesda are masters of hype. Major gaming sites worship the ground they walk on, and they know it. IGN had dozens of articles pre-release basically amounting to ''HEY THIS IS SKYRIM GUYS NOBODY PLAYED IT YET BUT IT'S AS AWSUM WE KNOW CAUSE IT'S BETHESDA!!!!!''. Remember all those presentations they did for Oblivion, Fallout 3, even Skyrim, that contained outright lies (off the top of my head, have you ever seen a dragon pick up a giant in actual gameplay? No doubt the giant would just swat the annoying lizard and be done with it)? Completely scripted events masqueraded as natural occurences? This (wait, scratch that, those) videos where Todd is being cheered at like he is a rock star, dodging questions all the time? Oh yes, Beth knows how to hype. They deliver to an extent, but it's a fraction of the hype.

And yet their fanbase just asks for me, and they sell tons of copies. The game is important for sales. But the marketing is just as much, if not more, regardless if it's an AAA title or some little indie project. It may be big flashy all-CGI ads, or just plain old word of mouth, but advertising is at least as important to selling the product as the product itself.

And I never pro-order. Ever. This is just asking for dissapointment.

True. :) Which is why you need to be more careful and choosy when purchasing video games. Understand that EVERY developer lies (I love Bethesda, but they lie too... :( ) and exaggerates to sell their product. Realize that the game may not be as advertised, and don't buy games hoping for the best when you can't afford to take the hit. :)

How is it the company's fault when someone gets their high expectations get crushed? It is not, it is your fault for not waiting an extra week or month to buy it while also doing research on how the game did. Or maybe rent it for a while. Oh, but wait! Companies are supposed to pat you on the head and make sure the game is everything you want and making money should not even be in their priorities.

Pro-tip: Have no expectations. Don't expect the game to flop, but do not expect it to be the most epic thing ever. Do not believe what a company (you know, the ones trying to get you to buy their product?) says about their product until you try it for yourself. Learn that they have to try and please everyone; you're not their only customer. If you were, you would be paying AT LEAST 20 million US dollars; and that is if they're only wanting to break even. Guess what, AAA-genre games can also cost the company $100-million to make.

After Oblivion's Radiant AI fiasco... when they showed videos of the AI in action, I have learned to NEVER trust anything Bethesda says again about an upcoming game. I wouldn't even read anything about Skyrim before it came out. I'm glad I didn't. I got what I was expecting, though hoping against... Oblivion with some improvements, but also some regression.

I got more hyped up after reading the "Skyrim is the greatest game ever" threads here right after release, but I tried to ignore them. It didn't take long for people to realize what Skyrim actually is. Yes, it's fun. But it's nothing like it could have or should have been.

Of course, hype should never be believed after what Peter Molyneux did with Fable.

Prior to its release Skyrim was hyped so much with so many trailers, interviews, and previews.
There are things that were mentioned about Skyrim that we never got to see in the game, thanks to the Hype.
"ZOMG, the cities are gonna be so massive !! so many interactive choices !"
"Oh yeaah, dragon fighting is gonna be epic as hell, they're gonna be such unique experiences.."

This is a problem not just with Skyrim, but with modern game developers in general..
Pre-orders take up SOOO many part of their sales that hyping is almost as important as making the actual game !!!!!
Hype it up enough then you can sell millions of copies without having to release a good game !!
So game developers spend CRAZY amount of money putting advertisemants all over internet and tv while they could've put those money into making the game better..
How can we, as users, fix this??

Well here's my advice: DON'T PRE-ORDER !!! DON'T BUY INTO THEIR HYPES. DON'T EXPECT THAT JUST BECAUSE THEIR PREQUEL WAS GOOD THEIR SEQUEL WILL BE JUST AS GOOD ! IT IS NOT EVER!! TO LATE TO BUY A GAME A LITTLE BIT LATER TIL THE WORD GETS AROUND WITH PEOPLE SAYING THE GAME IS EITHER GOOD OR BAD !! ..have a little patience for the sake of all the gamers out there.

Definitely YES. Agreed.

Some of us are so laizy that havent bought the Follout3 DLC (skyrim) even now. I know those people - they dont use consoles and the game is unplayable for them on their powerful PCs with all that FOV that kills their eyes and ugly graphics coming from prehistoric era and ugly ingame features like no journal and markers and soulless fighting system.
Yes, dont buy the hype, check the demo first if it's available before the release or wait the release for stupid people to test the new game for you.

it all revolves around money, if they could get more customers by ads then they will spend their resources there then actually making a decent game, but it will bite them in the a** because they will loose future customers, although some fans are really persistent like people that keep buying all the sonic games that svck.

So true. Molyneux has the personality and business ethic of a used car salesman.

I finally got around to buying New Vegas today, i only by the titles that are in the genre's i like the most , and only after i research the game as much as possible . Right now i buy around 5 games a year max and not always at release time if it's not an absolute must have Mass Effect, DA ,or TES i wait untill the price comes down. I only buy RPG's for the most part and onlt AAA titles to avoid getting burned. I won't but another TES unless they put more RPG elements back into it and put more effort into the interaction and relationships with the other characters.

It lived up to most of the hype to me, and for me at least the dragon encounters are definitely a different experience than standard combat in the game. The city size is as I expected it.

There are a few glaring oversights such as magic combat clearly taking a backseat to the melee skills (no leveled destruction yet stronger enemies with level and stronger physical weapons with skill). That they included over fifty possible romances and didn't bother including at least one of each race/gender is boggling too. Obviously the bugs and sloppy PC version are bad too, but that doesn't affect the hype to me.

I admit the glaring flaws with the control mapping and lack of a more robust hotkey system on the PC did surprise me. The blatant lie that there would be 7000 steps makes me shake my head too. Overall though I feel my hype was perfectly warranted.
