Spears.

The one thing id like back, more than anything else is the various polearms. As the most ubiquitos weapon of war, of both soldier, militia and peasantry well into the gunpowder age, its abscence just feels somehow..out of place. Its just that in real battles, its not sword vs sword. Spears were graet in morrowind. They werent the strongest but I loved using em!

I agree.

I made several spearmen in morrowind, for the logical weapon one would use against cliffracers.

I found it un-roleplaylike to not wield a spear in some parts of Vvardenfell.

Hopefully whatever new combat system they came up with now opened up the possibility of spears.

And lances for our war horses/war mammoths? I want mounted combat so so badly. But I agree spears were used so long in history. The spear was the first weapon ever used I am not counting a rock or a stick. Most spears were used with shields I want that incorporated.

Totally agree with that. Spears are an important weapon, and were missed in Oblivion. I don't see how one can add horses and remove spears. if there is one weapon to use on a horse... or egainst cavalry, it's a spear/lance/pike. (lack of horse combat could, i suppose, justify this, but still)

To be fair to Bethesda, the spear was always a military weapon intended for mass battles, where a polearm's reach was usually an advantage, and they could be driven into the ground as stakes to ward off cavalry. The thing is, the Elder Scrolls generally doesn't involve mass warfare. Instead, for the most part the player is fighting in small battles, against maybe three or four opponents, often indoors! This is exactly the sort of combat situation swords generally were used for, where the general unwieldiness of the spear is a disadvantage. While swords were almost never used as a primary military weapon, they were frequently used as "sidearms," and pretty much any civilian who could afford one carried a sword for personal defense. It also doesn't help that the dominant military force in the Elder Scrolls universe is the Imperial Legion, which is based on one of the few pre-gunpowder armies that did use the sword as its primary infantry weapon.

Still, spears > no spears.

Yeah spears were a notable missing weapon in Oblivion, it would be good to see them back.

a double edged spear is one of the most feared weapons in man to man melee. a staff is lethal enough, and sharp tips for the lunges and thrusts, and it's incredibly difficult to repell. the only ward egainst it would be a large shield. (2 tips for balance, as staff combat involves a lot of spinning, continuous motions that are impossible with only one sharp, heavier tip)

I'd love to see spears back, plus either an alternate throw mode or javelins as separate weapons.

I feel like the return of the spear class is almost essential. If we're fighting dragons or flying creatures in Skyrim, then we'll NEED the polearms to stand a chance.

Just so long as they give us some interesting polearms and unique spears, I'm happy.

I would like to see them back, but I hope they work better than in Morrowind. In real life, the advantage of a spear is that it lets you keep your enemy at a distance, where their (hopefully) shorter weapons won't be able to reach you. In Morrowind, enemies would just rush at you, usually only taking very little damage before getting in melee distance, so the spear didn't really offer much of an advantage unless you continuously backpedaled, and that strategy is obviously limited by the terrain.

If they could give spears a more consistent stun effect than other weapons, or increase the damage so that the one extra hit you got really matters, they would be a much more effective (and realistic) option than they were in Morrowind.

While I never used a spear in MW, I did miss them in OB, just for the sake of variety. Speaking of variety, you should really start numbering these spear threads, so we can keep up with them.

In Mount and Blade Warband you could press X for some weapons if you pressed it you could use a throwing weapon in melee. Also when you pressed it with a lance if your horse was going fast enough for you to brace the lance and let it go home. I think for lances we should do that. Also we might be able to do it for smaller spears and throw them.

As seeing as how the spear is essentially the oldest known weapon outside of a club, I was stricken dumb when I discovered they were removed from Oblivion. Please bring them back Bethesda.

I would love to see spears again, two-handed and one-handed versions, so that they can be wielded with a shield or wielded in both hands in a more martial-arts fashion.

That being said....this thread has been posted more times than I care to count since people found out Oblivion didn't have spears. It is starting to get old...

Arilias: I agree, those points are all perfectly valid. Still, it would be very odd for the spears to be absent. and say, a farmer defending his crops, or shepard, from wolves/goblins/etc would be safer using a spear. There are whole loads of types that would be great use, though I think the game shoudl focus mostly on a few. If they have mounted combat, Bec de Corbin should be heavily used to protect civilians from horseborne marauders. Glaives and Halbreds all look really pretty, and would at some nice curves and styles to the games systems..I love how daedric/glass stuff looks, but it shouldnt be the only thing that looks stunning.

And not to mention! the Sv?rdstav is a medieval sweedish weapon, with a name that fits Skyrim's scandinavian influences. Its name is translated literally as "Sword Staff" because its basically a sword tied onto a stick ^_^

First off, i know theres a suggestions thread already up. This isnt about that though, this is about this one thing that I believe will resonate strongly with the community. It doesnt deserve to chance the pagecount ether, and I really think that it is the only weapon removed that really should not have been.

@Oblivionfreak76: I have no problem with mounted combat in theory, but the mechanics involved would be a drain on resources. especially balancing it. But if they did, the Bec de Corbin would be a fantastic spear weapon. Lances, im not sure ive seen any in any game even as background objects.

Is this the same kind of spear polishing that was detailed in The Lusty Argonian Maiden? 0_o
