If this has been done as a poll before then disregard it.

There is no way to get directions without quest makers and even with them it's not always easy to get to done locations (not saying it should be easy). I've spent plenty of time running around cliffs or mountains looking for a way up/down to get to a marker.

An optimal situation would definitely be a map that has more options for you to mark and directions/clues given by npcs. Or something like Red Dead Redemption had, the map was marked with a large circle that showed you the general area your goal was in and it was up to you to get there and search the area.

Edit; forgot to add, quest makers for goals in three open world are ridiculous, a marker on the dungeon I need to enter is cool, but a marker on the exact item I need, npc I need to talk to or building I ned to enter is ridiculous and takes away a lot if challenge. It also discourages you from exploring the open world which is by far Skyrim's best feature.

I actually liked that in RDR as it only pinpointed the general location. I often play with them turned off if I cannot find the location if its outside of town i generally ignore it and hope to come across t when I go on strolls, plus I been working on a system of my to narrow down locations.

I'll definitely turn quest markers off if I know where those "here", "there" or "marked on your map" are.

Hi. I found an easy way to navigate all quests, even with quest markers off. For a discussion, see my post "quest location solved even with quest markers disabled". I'll try and link it here

Hope this helps, let me know if it did. As a long term player, I highly recommend playing without quest markers and even without fast travel.

it is helpful and I may try your methods since the amulet quest I got while doing a mage's guild quest I have yet to find the next crypt and assume its on the other end of the map.
