Quick Q: What leveling mod do you use with FCOM?

Post » Fri Nov 06, 2009 12:36 am

I'm looking for something balanced and most people make it sound as if they had to modify the ini to get something "right" out of it.

Had to? Not at all. Just because a mod is customizable doesn't mean it the player has to customize it. The option has merely been made available out of convenience: it's up to the player whether or not to use it. Progress runs great right out of the box and I imagine most player don't bother changing a single line. Plus, the mod comes packaged with several .ini files the player can experiment with, for those who don't want to tinker with an .ini.

Of course, it's up to the player whether they want control over their game or whether they want others to control their game.

I'm always wary about Progress when I see people tell all the customisation available. It may be just me but when I'm looking for a leveling mod I'm looking for something balanced and most people make it sound as if they had to modify the ini to get something "right" out of it.

You may be wary, but without having looked at a particular mod you shouldn't really be passing on your "advice" about particular mods to other potential users unless it's a know problem mod.

Note that I'm not the only one that was wary, the poster got scared by the idea of editing an .ini file :).
And please don't take my remark as an attack on the mod itself, I was simply pointing out the effect of introducing it mainly as entirely customisable(which is not a bad thing if it has already proper standard setups, which it has).

I'm in fact putting it in my Leveling Mod BAIN package right now as after checking out it turned out quite nice :).

edit:
Btw I wasn't passing any advice, don't know how you got that impression...

Not scared. Done my fair share of it, too much. Aiming for a CTD free-game with the help of Shikishima and this thread : http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1004123 . CTD free so far, and mostly just texture mods to add which shouldn't cause any issues. Although I have to say I was with DarklyDreaming on that thought "I'm always wary about Progress when I see people tell all the customisation available. It may be just me but when I'm looking for a leveling mod I'm looking for something balanced and most people make it sound as if they had to modify the ini to get something "right" out of it." Never read up on it much, thought it was a mod that was made to be customizable and that you had to customize it to your tastes before starting up a game.

I may look into Progress more. From what's been suggested so far I may just stick with RealisticLeveling. I could ask the same question again about which will work best, but I think it's a matter of my choice now and personal taste. Not really sure what Progress is like on it's default settings.

Hey, if you, like me, like to assign the attribute points yourself, try this:

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9914

The levelup screen is just like in Vanilla, except the amount of points you can assign to any of the stats depends on the choices you make when you start using the mod, in otherwords you characters strengths.

The system looks almost too simple at first, but you can really end up with different kind of characters, it?s hard to explain in short but maxing out the attributes with high multipliers as early on as you can is not necessarily the best option, it tends to give you more uneven result in the end. :)

This is from the SPAM readme, to give an example of the system:

An attribute that falls under Primary Specialization will go up +4 if selected at level-up, or +5 if it was also selected as Favored Attribute during Character Creation. An attribute that falls under Secondary Specialization will go up +3 if selected at level-up, or +4 if it was also selected as Favored Attribute during Character Creation. An attribute that falls under neither specialization will go up +2 if selected at level-up, or +3 if it was also selected as Favored Attribute during Character Creation. The only exceptions to these rules are Personality and Luck. Neither of these attributes are tied to any specialization, and therefore follow their own rules.Personality will always go up +4 if selected at level-up no matter the specializations, or it will instead go up +5 if it was selected as Favored Attribute during Character Creation.Luck will always go up +1 if selected at level-up no matter the specializations, though it will instead go up +2 if it was selected as a Favored Attribute during Character Creation. If you need further clarification on what was explained above, see the included chart below. Due note that this chart only takes into account your character's Primary and Secondary Specialization, and does not take into account your character's Favored Attributes. You can increase any two of the modifiers by one through your character's Favored Attribute selections.(Primary Specialization/Secondary Specialization)........C/M....C/S....M/C....M/S....S/C....S/M----------------------------------------------------Str.....+4.....+4.....+3.....+2.....+3.....+2Int.....+3.....+2.....+4.....+4.....+2.....+3Wlp.....+3.....+2.....+4.....+4.....+2.....+3Agl.....+2.....+3.....+2.....+3.....+4.....+4Spd.....+2.....+3.....+2.....+3.....+4.....+4End.....+4.....+4.....+3.....+2.....+3.....+2Per.....+4.....+4.....+4.....+4.....+4.....+4Lck.....+1.....+1.....+1.....+1.....+1.....+1C = Combat / M = Magic / S = Stealth(Note this chart does not take into account your two Favored Attribute)(Selecting an Attribute as Favored adds one to the above modifier number)So here are some examples:Example Character 1 has Primary Specialization in Combat with Secondary Specialization in Magic, and has Intelligence and Endurance as his two Favored Attributes. Example Character 1's default S.P.A.M. modifiers would be Str +4, Int +4, Wlp +3, Agl +2, Spd +2, End +5, Per +4, Lck +1.Example Character 2 has Primary Specialization in Stealth with Secondary Specialization in Combat, and has Willpower and Luck as his two Favored Attributes. Example Character 2's default S.P.A.M. modifiers would be Str +3, Int +2, Wlp +3, Agl +4, Spd +4, End +3, Per +4, Lck +2For information on how this system maintains balance and tips on playing use it, read the included "S.P.A.M.'s Balance Explained and Tips for Developing a Character with S.P.A.M.txt" file.

I use Kobu's Character Advancement System (KCAS) - the Great Wheel being the specific path I choose. I also added KCAS X2 slower leveling to prevent my character leveling up too fast.

With RBP, my Nord is already quite strong and has a lot of HP. Never was interested in tweaking the attribute gain too much, so haven't tried Progress.

Is that the Skycaptain that made Deadly Reflexes?

Easily my favorite mod in Oblivion! :flamethrower:

I saw those nice custom fallout 3 textures that you used in your screenshots, but it seems you have neglected to add a place to find them :hubbahubba:

Are you sharing these anywhere or is it there some exclusive club that you have to be in to obtain them?

I will check out all these mods mentioned and make the best choice. Thanks for the help everyone, very helpful.

I tried Wrye leveling mod in a few games and it was pretty good. You want to level, you pay gold. Adjust the number of gains at each level. Set the costs high and you have incentive to go treasure hunting.

This time around I am trying Realistic leveling.

Wha? Which textures? Which screens? All I have ever used are from public mods...both in OB and FO.
