How does Dual Wielding combat actually work?

I am curious as to how Dual Wielding combat actually works. When I equipe my character with a sword that does say 10 damage, at the bottom it says Damage 10. So when I dual equipe with say same sword damage becomes 20 now. So does this mean that if you only attack with your right hand it does 20 points of damage now, or it's total damage with both hands?

I find it I am not dexterious enough in real life to be using both triggers for combat (yeah I am a clutz in real life) but it seems if I dual wield and just swing with my right weapon, I do more damage than I do with just swinging with my right weapon with no weapon in the left hand. So this got me thinking dual wielding is just for looks but not sure about this.

So how does dual weilding actually work?
