Wheels, individual perks, tailored intro, backstory and equipment make each one feel a little unique.
Team orders let you talk to one X Companion and command the whole group.
The standard 8 New Vegas companions also respond to those team orders, which is nice.
The X Companions are located in various places, mostly the Mojave. Nearly all are designed to get to easily and let you get into the action fast. A couple have some requirements on DLC, or level, or are a bit harder to reach. But even in the DLC you'll find them near the beginning.
