AMD Says Xbox 720 Will Have Avatar Quality Graphics

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 9:30 am

-Xbox 720 will have 'graphics like Avatar' - AMD
Hardware giant has tall expectations for 360 successor
Microsoft's Xbox 360 successor will be capable of graphical detail level with James Cameron's movie Avatar, according to hardware giant AMD.

Speaking to Official Xbox Magazine US, director of ISV relationships at AMD, Neal Robison wouldn't outright confirm the tech firm's working on the new Xbox, but did state that gamers 'have a lot to be excited about'.

Robison claimed the A.I. and physics capabilities of the next-gen hardware will allow for every pedestrian in a game such as Grand Theft Auto to have a 'totally individual mentality,' meaning no more mob mentality - 'every NPC will actually be an individual character'.-

For me these are just the same naive and exaggerated statements as always

But on the Pc there could already be grfx like they use in CG animations for actual hollywood movies
Just look at AMDs Cinema 2.0 Demos, the Samaritan Demo from Epic or Cryteks Demo for the upcoming CE3 Devkit (movie edition). Nowadays graphical standards on the PC are mainly limited by the mutliplatform development which is oriented towards the consoles. But they dont reflect what high end Pc hardware is really capable of. Im head-shaking every time someone claims that when new consoles hit the market, they surpass Pcs in terms of performance. But thats simply not true. Just look at the ps3 it came 5 days after the 8800 GTX was released. Combined with a strong CPU like the INTEL Q6600 you would have already outperformed the PS3 by far!

It will be interesting to see what devs can pull-off in the future.

@ Pein-Lazarus

Its sad that the devs could pull -off way more than they actually do for the PC.
Its like Epic and Crytek are teasing us by showing Demos on high end Pcs and saying: look Sony and Microsoft... we could do so much more if you deliver us new consoles... but thinking of making a game out of that and give it to us pc gamers fails because of the heavily capitalized video game market nowadays.

I get what ya mean man I doubt console will have anything close to a hex core i7-980 let alone any 1366 socket type or a 6900 amd or 500 series ti videocard from amd. Hell, we can get up to what, 32 gigs or even 24 these days? Whent he 720's launched I wouldn't be suprised if windows 8 and motherboards were supporting 40+ gigs of ram at ddr4 operating maybe 3 ghz (3000 mhz) and 8+ core processors like amd's 8 core processor. Here's what really pisses me off, developers make games specifically for consoles then port it to pc and it looks better on consoles then pc. Example, call of duty, singularity or any game using the unreal engine really. Just my 2 cents, still consoles might surpass a mid-low range pc or even be on par with high end pcs, but in 2-5 years, pc's will blow consoles out of the water. Look at witcher 2 for example, there is so much to do in thta game and it looks so beautiful, they would have to dumb down the graphics to port it to consoles and i hope to god they don't.

Every time the next-gen consoles are announced, they hype up how awesome the graphics will be for the games, then they hype up the games to make them sell. Same story every time a new console system is released.

The technology for advanced special effects in videogames has been in our PC's videocards for a long time, but even if they were in full use the videocard wouldn't do it smoothly. Just look at tessellation in DX11, even that makes the highest-end PC's out there break a sweat.

PC's nowadays actually are capable of that level of graphics detail, but most developers do not have the time or budget to make the game look that amazing.

I seriously doubt what AMD said.

Business is money. Like someone said, they hype it up. Simply cause they have to tease you, and make you want to purchase the next consoles. The reason devs are waiting for next gen consoles, is cause they want to collect the cash. Usually when consoles come out, there amongst the best -at the point of release-. But PC can always be upgraded to produce better, so yes, consoles will become quickly outdated.

Console makers are trying to work much closer with the teams which produce their own engines. To allow them to see what things are required in order to push them. So who knows what the future would hold?

I'm just interested to see what they can all do, respectively.

If someone releases a console that lets you plug in a keyboard and mouse I'll be happy :)

PS3 supports keyboard, and mouse.

It just developers don't build games on PS3 which support the feature.

@ Mole/Kozz

When a console is released, it comes out powerful for that period. (in most cases) but PC can be upgraded easily, so yes, of course PC will always be ahead of consoles in that sense. Moreover, everyone hypes their products. Its a way of getting public attention. Some 'overhype'.

I was going to second that w/ the PS3 supporting KB&M support and last I checked you should be able to default the settings in the XMB menus to just use that setup

I think so.

But for games playing, no. The game itself needs to support the feature. (Counter Strike GO will support it on PS3)

I think it was a while ago when some alleged documents got released, it slated the name for the next XBOX was 720.

So yeah, its caught on I guess.

i highly doubt the graphics will be that great, they'll prob still be pretty great though, and obviously better than the current gen but not the avatar like graphics, i dunno why just sounds to soon for consoles to have graphics like that, maybe the next next gen will though

Rumor has it that Sony is joining AMD has well and dumping the cell processor. I would like both of the Xbox 720 and PS4 to achieve 2.5 FLOPS in game play. The Samaritan Demo ran off of three GTX 580's and that was a year ago, to make the Samaritan Demo run 2.5 FLOPS thats what Tim Sweeney says from epic games, now if both of the consoles could achieve that we could have Next Generation in Multi-Platform games!!! The price got's to be afordable tho are else people won't buy!

P.S I want the Next Generation in gaming so bad but it's not my decision, I'm just a gamer!!!
