Why Didn't the Elder scroll cause blindness in Oblivion but it does in Skyrim ? also whats with the one book laid out on the table at the winterhold college that basically explains why it caused no blindness in Oblivion is because 1st time readers with no knowledge on how to read the scroll will only see what we saw on the Oblivion scroll gaining no knowledge hence forth no blindness

but then the Skyrim character with no knowledge on how to read the Elder scroll gets blinded by looking at it ?

(also I couldn't think of a suitable title for this topic ... but I do think it belongs in the general discusion area since the topic is about the blind effect an Elder Scroll is supposed to possess and not the spoiler on how to obtain them)

Just guessing until someone more knowledgeable comes along, but I thought the blindness comes from using it for prophecy which you didn't really do.

a) it's only useful once

you must be standing ON THE QUEST MARKER, with the greybeard's leader, and then you must sit back and relax (and it must be in the time shift)

CoC didn't have the capacity to understand the Elder Scroll because he had no need to read it, while Dovahkiin has the capacity to understand it because he needs to read it (with the assistance of the Time-Wound) in order to learn Dragonrend.

Dramatic effect on behalf of the developer.

You can or at least could (before 1.3, haven't checked after) open it at any location you want. The only real change is when you use it on the time shift.

I think the difference comes in what you want to use it for, in Oblivion reading the Elder Scroll had no effect because essentially the CoC is there to steal it for the Grey Fox. He has no real purpose to read it except for seeing if it's real.

The Dovahkiin basically works for himself, If you read the scroll it is bound to have another effect because you have a different purpose, but you're still not actively trying to read it. I think only when trying to read/understand the Elder Scroll will it have the effect of blindness.

The elder scroll's power is explained to the dragonborn, and has the intent to use it, whilst it is not fully explained to the hero nor does he intend to use it. This is speculation, but it may also be due to him being dragonborn, I think it is said somewhere that dragons are more sensitive to the effects of time, which is an aspect the elder scrolls contain, so the dragonborn would be affected by an elder scroll.

Dragons are more sensitive to time, whether or not the dragonborn is the same is unknown. It would be logical however.
