The Birth of Cliff Racers: A Dunmeri Myth
Once upon a time, the dragons ruled all of the North. Their domain stretched from High Rock to Morrowind. Skyrim gained it's freedom during the Dragon Wars, when the Nords rebelled against their masters. High Rock became independent when the Direnni elves used the fact that the dragon forces were busy suppressing the rebellion in the east to conquer large swaths of land. But ages ago, the first land to become free of the tyranny of dragons was Morrowind. Morrowind was once controlled solely by the dragons and Dwemer. This all changed when the Chimer wandered into Morrowind. Great Saint Veloth paid no respect to the dragons. He said that they were the worst kind of gods. They did not teach their followers like the Daedra, nor did they give us the great gift of the world like the Aedra. They demanded worship and tribute with nothing in return. The Dwemer's refusal to worship the dragons already angered them enough, but the Chimer's blatant insults enraged them beyond measure. Thus, the Dragons and Nords attacked the Chimer for the first time, beginning a rivalry that persists to this day.
The Dwemer's machines were mighty, and the Chimer's magics formidable, but the Elves were losing to the power of the dragons. Their screams were so mighty that they shook the earth itself, collapsing the Dwemer's underground fortresses. The Nords' sheer numbers easily defeated the elite but rare Chimer warriors. Thus, Veloth prayed to the Daedra, asking them for help. A mysterious spirit arrived, and claimed that he could stop the Dragons. Veloth agreed to his help and the spirit transformed a flock of doves into monsters. The monsters bred rapidly, were extremely vicious and came in large swarms. The dragons were no match for the flying beasts, as hundreds descended upon them and stripped them to the bone within moments. The dragons and Nords retreated from Morrowind, defeated.
However, the bloodlust of the creatures was not sated. They turned on the Dwemer and Chimer, devouring and killing many. The spirit who had created them revealed himself as Sheogorath. He laughed at how these monsters who the Chimer believed would be their salvation became a scourge much worse than any dragon could be. Veloth prayed once more, and Boethiah answered. Boethiah confronted Sheogorath and demanded that he stop the beasts. Sheogorath revealed that even he couldn't control them, and they would run rampant until they had devoured all life in Morrowind and then starve to death. Boethiah took out his sword and attacked the beasts, impaling them in their progeny-stones. With their stones damaged, the monsters grew smaller and had less children. Boethiah forced Sheogorath to alter the children of the beasts so that they would share the missing stone of their predecessors. And thus these beasts became what we now know as Cliff Racers.
