If you activate it (like you pick up any object or open a container) before it explodes, the mine will be deactivated. You have to be fast though.

After deactivating it, you can pick the mine up by clicking on it again.

Also increasing your explosives skill makes the mines explode a bit later, which gives you more time to deactivate them.

You can also buy a mine and give it to Moira if you're unable to deactivate one quickly enough. Moira can't tell the difference.

Don't you lose out on the bonus though?

Not as long as you get to the playground and get the objective updated in your pipboy. As long as you get to the playground and back to Moira with a mine, she'll be happy and give you the schematic. You can give her a mine from Minefield, one purchased from a store or one looted from a container or other place.

Well by then you might as well explore the damn place.

Try and just run towards the mine and spam the button to disarm it, it usually works for me even with low explosive skill.

I find it easier to deactivate mines in sneak mode, rather than standing.

^ ^ ^ Me, too. I keep the target cursor fixed on it and sneak toward it. As soon it beeps, I hit the "activate" key, like I would to open a trash can or search a body. Fun!

Sometimes I'm not quick enough....

I do it slightly differently. I sneak but instead of having the cursor fixed on the mine I focus it on the ground in front of me. Then I move forward until the cursor is on the mine and then I deactivate it. I find this to be easier than trying to keep the cursor focused on the mine. Ever since I started doing it like that I have never failed to deactivate a mine.

I would only suggest the Light Step perk to people who really couldn't disarm mines if their life depended on it. Otherwise it's a waste of a perk.

Yeah if you are pretty high in explosives then I wouldn't bother with the lite step perk

Light step perk is also really a bliss if you have mods which increase the trap damage, or just play on very hard. Can't normally be bothered checking the ground for traps if i'm caught up in a fight with 10+ raiders/ghouls. Nice to see them take out the ghouls though :D
