First experience playing Morrowind. Need some guidance on se

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 7:55 pm

Hi there,

So far I've been playing Oblivion. Now I want to try Morrowind, but the difference in the quality of the graphics between the two games is quite important. So basically what I just want to achieve for my first game is a bug free experience and to substantially improve the visuals of the game without having to load an insane amount of mods (if that's possible).

So far I've collected these mods:

Connary's textures (from this page: http://mw.modhistory.com/download-55-5679).
MGE XE
Morrowind Code Patch
Unofficial Morrowind Patch

Also, I've found that the faces in the game could be better (I know it's quite normal for a 10-year-old game). Therefore, after comparing them all, I want to use one of the NPC's head replacers shown on this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/994490-the-npc-head-replacer-comparison-thread/page__hl__vivec

If you have any other ideas you think I'd like to know, please let me know. Thank you.

There is Morrowind Sounds & Grahpics Overhaul 2.0. It consists of quite some mods - few dozens - but the installations is autmated, you do not need to install anything manually.

'course, it can take a LOT out of your PC to run. If you can't run it well, just look at the Morrowind Visual Packs and such. I'd recommend Westly's head replacers. Dunmer are still a WIP in that one though. OR you could try better heads and better bodies. Better heads is...not as good in my opinion. I would link them but I'm sorry as hell. :P Google should find them easy enough.

Thanks for your replies.

Actually I knew of MSGO 2.0. But I'd rather install the mods individually because that way I think it's easier to keep your mods up to date (for example, MSGO 2.0 includes the v0.9.4 of MGE XE, which is not the most current one).

Ryu, thank you for your suggestions. I'll have a look at them.

For bare minimum basics, I would use the morrowind code patch, and the morrowind patch project, plus MGE XE, and these texture packs installed in this order (so the right textures overwrite eachother)-

visual pack
connarys textures
darknuts armours, creature and weapon textures
better clothes + more better clothes

the above textures cover practically everything in the game except for a few misc things like the silt-striders (vurt has a silt strider rexture that should be relatively easy to find actually). Sorry for no links, but everything listed should be easily findable on google (except for connarys textures but you seem to know about them already).

that is really all you need for a vanilla playthrough with modernised graphics. I would suggest spending some time fiddling around with MGE to achieve the best looks with a decent fps. Then you are all ready to go really

Make sure you get Better Bodies, if you haven't already. Also look up Westly's Fit Body Textures (nicer textures for Better Bodies), then overwrite the female textures of that with his and Cappucine's Extra High Resolution textures.

Afaik, MGSO mods are already in their complete stage, so difficulties updating them should not stop you from getting this amazing pack. Plus, the author keeps it up to date and should any mod of the pack get an update, the pack itself would get an easy-to-install update as well. Also, you can find a nice list of experience mods here http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1211599-wipz-morrowind-overhaul-game-experience/ . I also recommend using Combat Moves and Gratuitous Violence (http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1179276-relzbeta-gratuitous-violence/).

Just my 2c, but I'd keep in mind Ryu Hayabusa's warning that some mods can have a big impact on your pc's performance; just need to read the readmes. MGE XE is one such; there is a separate thread (Shelter from Magnus Blaze) devoted to it. MCP is made by the same person who codes MGE XE. mlox is not a mod, but it uses rules provided by players to anolyze your mod load order and can rearrange the order with notes in many cases.

As far as I recall, the Morrowind Patch Project (MPP) replaces the old Unofficial Patch. Otherwise, you're good to go.

After I come back to Morrowind every now and then, I mostly just looks for the "Top rated" and "Hall of Fame" for a few (or several) pages, pick out which ones suit me.

I you're looking for an updated overhaul that doesn't change too much from the original game, check out Knot's guide.

http://www.somethingfornobody.com/2011/morrowind-modding-guide/

It's not perfect, but it's probably the best guide I've come across and a good place to start.

Hey, thanks very much for all your suggestions! Thanks to all of them, I'll be able to build a nice mod set-up around my first game.

Btw, what's your opinion on Wrye Mash? Wrye Bash is a must for Oblivion IMO. Can you say the same for the duet Morrowind-Mash?

I highly recommend using Better Bodies. It might not improve much for the bodies as there really isn't much to do with bodies that are meant to not look naked even when wearing armor. Better Bodies won't effect much else but the meshes of the bodies. I don't know if it is even possible to play Morrowind and not run into at least one bug, though. *shrugs* I don't use really more than under five or four visual changing mods. I only use two such mods, in fact. Better Bodies and an addin for that called Better Bodies for Beasts or something.

Perhaps not for your first run through, but I recommend my Creatures mod :D Adds a lot of new enemies and eye candy to flesh out the ecology.
Also, if you end up hating Vivec city, you could use my Redesigned Vivec that makes the place more like the concept art, but it can be a bit heavy on FPS.
