Recurring crash with Tears Of The Fiend (SPOILERS)

Hey y'all, once again!

So, I junked my old character (RIP Kevsterr the Imperial, felled by a corrupt save :cryvaultboy: ) and started a new one. So far, most of my problems have just been because of a little too much abuse of the setstage command to get to where I was but it's been manageable.

However, one recurring crash I've been having has been in Simyaz's excellent Tears Of The Fiend where I get a CTD when

I enter the abyss for the second time.
I'm really enjoying the mod and my new character, but I'm starting to worry if it's a corrupt save again.

I tried loading a old save and redoing what I did and the same thing happened, which was alarming. I was reading somewhere that the abyss is prone to creating corrupt saves so that may very well be it but I wanted to be sure anyway.

I'm running OBSE v20 with OSR using heapmode 6, ConScribe, Elys USV, FastExit 2, OBGEv3.1 RC, Pluggy and MenuQue.

My current system is a Core i7 920 at 2.67ghz, a GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1gb and 6gb of RAM, all of which are running on Windows 8 CP 64-bit. My oblivion exe is patched with the LAA flag.

Bump because this has basically grinded my game to a halt. I tried waiting three days and the crash still happens in the Abyss.

Probably a mod conflict......... I can't find much info for a crash at that point, might wanna look thru the documentation that came with the download.

Ok, there seems to be a problem with the bashed patch. Loading without the bashed patch stops the crashing but I kinda need the bashed patch with my LO. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Rebuild the patch. It's probably got a bad reference hanging around in it somewhere. Can't help much beyond that, when last I played TOTF it ran fine and I had no trouble getting past the Abyss.

Nope, that didn't work. Should I note that I'm running a old SVN of WB (2318)?

EDIT: Upgrading to the newest SVN (2353) didn't fix it either.

I'm not sure how much info is given in the documentation for TOTF, but if you can find a list of the different stages of the quest, you can use the console with "setstage" to advance the quest to its next stage, bypassing the point where your game is exploding, and then you wouldn't have to enter the abyss with its nasty crash. I know it's no fun to not be able to play through that part of the quest, but at least you'd be able to continue and finish the rest of it.

Well, I'm fully able to complete the section if I don't load my bashed patch but that's a lot of mods that don't get loaded and could possibly cause a lot more trouble later on down the road. Is there anyway I can show what I have in my bashed patch so I could pinpoint where it's going wrong?

You need to open tes4edit, load all your mods, and see what conflicts with tears of the fiend.

Looking at TES4EDIT shows no conflicts that I can see. Then again, I only have the faintest grasp on how to use the program.

I finished the mod no problem with my Bashed Patch once I got past that problem area. Peculiar. Oh well, thanks again for trying to help everyone!

I don't use Tears of the Fiend personally, but one thing that I have found helpful when trying to diagnose stubborn CTDs is that when using Oblivion Stutter Remover (which you should be, if you're not) is to temporarily switch bReplaceHeap from 1 to 0 in the OSR INI file.

I've encountered a number of situations where I was getting persistent CTDs for no apparent reason in specific parts of quest mods and temporarily making that change (or even just changing the heap algorithm temporarily) resolved the problem. OSR just has weird interactions with some scripts, e.g. in an older version of Mannimarco Revisited using OBSE 18+ in combination with OSR would result in a CTD at a certain point of the quest 100% of the time. Not just for me, but for others as well. Ultimately I commented out the offending part of the script, but this is a good debugging step.

The author of OSR commented at one point that the way the heap replace works will interact differently based on your hardware and mod setup, and I don't think anyone really understands fully what it's doing at any one given moment. 99.9% of the time OSR make Oblivion rock-solid. But I have seen it introduce instabilities 0.1% of the time. Happened to me just recently with a different mod, as it happens.
