I'm using Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 and WINE 1.3.26, and trying to run Morrowind using Steam.

Graphics card = GeForce GTX 260

Steam is running fine and I've downloaded the game, but when I try to play I get the error message: "The program Morrowind.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Can anyone suggest where I'm going wrong?

Have you tried messing with the Wine registry? I got a retail GOTY copy running on Wine in Natty, but I needed to mess with the registry keys.

Make sure Morrowind is supported under that version. There was a regression related to it somewhat recently, not sure the details.

Try running Morrowind with higher log settings or from a terminal and see what output Wine gives for the crash.
