The difficulty of MW

Post » Thu Nov 12, 2009 11:15 am

I bought MW about a year ago and on my first character I found the game to be quite hard. Then after I had managed too complete House Redoran, Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, Imperial Legion, Imperial Cult, Tribunal Temple, the main quest and about half of the Comona Tong(don't ask how I did it, I have no idea how by character survived) I decided to create a new character. The game starts of like the last one, BUT this time I find myself killing every treath I encounter without any trouble, never had too care about what I spendt my money on and before I even managed too complete a single quest-line I was past lvl 70 on my Imperial Crusader(pre-made class).
Am I the only one that found MW to be quite easy after your first playthrough?
P.S: I'm not flaming or saying MW is a bad game(it's not in my opinion), only that it felt a bit easy on the second playthrough.

It isn′t strange at all. When you′ve played a game you know how it works, what you can do and how to improve your character. It′s as simple as that :)

This is exactly why lots of folks turn to more roleplay-oriented characters. It makes it much harder when you limit yourself to unarmored, no melee weapons, no creeper or mudcrab, no unique items, no intelligence buffing, 100 difficulty, etc. Believe me, you can certainly make the game more difficult. I had my lvl 70 Imperial Legionnaire at the very end of the last expansion questline. The game's last baddie killed me dead with 3 quick swipes of his mace. I had simply let my guard down. Lucklily, I had also saved. I reloaded, finished the quest, tidied up my homestead, and retired the character. 100 difficulty and some RP rules can make a massive difference...

My most recent build is by far the best character I've ever created. He's breezed through everything, and I had to turn up the difficulty to 75, and that's only challenging when I have to face 6 Reikling Raiders at once. I do think it gets easier, but that's because I know how to make better characters, and I know what to do.

It was easy on my first playthrough. I gave Fargoth his ring, bought some stuff, cleared the nearby smuggler cave, and the game continued to be smooth sailing from there with me being able to kill pretty much everything once I got above level 10. I never thought the game was difficult.

well, to make it harder people seem to use a variety of approaches.

alchemy and enchant, don′t do fortify intelligence potions etc, perhaps limit your selv with lesser quality gear and don′t go for a certain master equipment the first thing you do ;)

there is a difficulty slider in your menu, pull that all the way to the hardest.

install mods who adds enemies and creatures, mca is a popular choise there.
and suddenly it aint quite so easy :D

Your observation has a lot to do with the difference between heavy reliance on static opponents (Morrowind) and an almost entirely levelled and scaled game (Oblivion). The problem with the first type is that you learn where everything is and how to beat it on the second playthrough, and you've got to either ignore what you as a player know, or else use self-made rules or mods to maintain any real challenge, The problem with the second type is that it makes character progression meaningless, besides creating a nonsensical world where some things don't even exist until the game feels that you're ready for them, then they're inexplicably "commonplace". I've been hoping that the next game steers a "middle course" with a mix of static and levelled content, but so far it's not looking that way.
