The package, The dupe, and The delivery

I’ve been working this job for a long time, never once have I looked back, at least until now that is. You see it started like any routine delivery; my job was to bring an item of no significance to someone of even less. I should have known better by the amount of money I was paid up front, but hey when you live cap by cap you don’t ask too many questions! Now I know what you’re thinking, you’re thinking that I’m The Currier, the one who singlehandedly whipped out Casers’ Legion and set up the NCR with all that nice cushy territory. Actually nope, no such luck, that guy doesn’t write his story’s down he has people for that.

I hear you asking “if you aren’t The Currier, then why should I give a damn about what you’ve done?” Well to answer that question I need to tell you all a story, and like I said I really should have known what I was getting into but oh well, here it is the unabridged and unedited version of the legendary delivery of Jimmy Hawkins.

On any one day I made around five deliveries in and around the Vegas Strip centered around my office in a dusty dingy little building that had somehow survived the years without a single corpse. On this particular morning a stranger walked into my little business he was around twenty with long brown hair and a killer’s smile stuck on his face. In his arms under his badly battered jacket was a small box which he threw at me and said in a voice that could send children running.

“Take this to the place specified on the box, I’m paying five thousand up front with another five thousand on delivery, get your ass moving!” he then threw me the caps in a little bag cha ching, that was more money then I normally make in a month! Throwing on my wind faded leather duster, strapped my magnum on to its place on my belt and set off the down into Freeside. Passing the vagrant children chasing after a giant rat my mind turned as it usually does at the beginning of a delivery to food. Is it bad that at this point the fact that children are chasing a giant rat to eat because they have nothing else to eat makes me hungry? Then again considering that I grew up in this hole just like they did I knew just how tough it was, ah what the hell? I thought as I kicked the rat sending it right into the group of children, who immediately tore large bloody chunks out of the rat before saying “thanks mister”, what can I say I have a soft spot for the little bastards.

I waved to the bodyguards for hire who waited around the entrance of Freeside waiting for some other idiot to hire them. They flicked me off, so I just smiled and jingled my pockets, I may not make much on average, but it’s more than they do and they know it. Once I was outside of Freeside I looked took out the package and opened it, normally it isn’t my practice to go through people’s mail, but I wanted to see what was worth ten thousand caps! All it was, was a worthless little bottlecap, the only interesting thing about it was a large black target that had been painted on it. Ten thousand caps for this I thought, oh well some people are crazy! Now it should have been around now that I realized that something was up, but I was too distracted by all of the food, and women that ten thousand caps could buy me.

I followed the instructions attached to the box to the letter and ended up a little of the way away from the NCR quarry. Now this should have been when I turned back, after all everyone had heard the stories about what was currently occupying the quarry, and they were not the kind of thing you want to meet. A soft chuckle reached me, like the sound water running down a dry stream bed for the first time in months. Out of the fading light emerged the scariest type of human you can ever run into out here in the wastes, the kind in white powerarmor!

“Well, well, well what do we have here?” asked the powerarmored figure in a decidedly feminine voice “Oh, I see the NCR is playing a joke on us, oh this is so funny I can’t wait to kill you and then get back to base to tell everyone about it, so any last words.” This situation was hurting my brain a little so I did the only thing I could I said.

“Package delivery, and that’s five thousand caps you owe me by the way misses almighty.” Man I’m such a genius, sometimes that wit of mine even astounds me!

P2 and yes it’s now magically going to be in parts

Well let me clarify for something that the almighty Currier never mentions in his books that he doesn’t write staring down a gauss rifle wielding powerarmor wearing member of the Brotherhood of Steel is enough to scare you [censored]less, no ifs ands or buts about it I was ready to start panicking! Apparently this member of the Brotherhood had never expected me to be here, and by here I mean in the middle of [censored] nowhere. And from what I could gather she was supposed to be meeting someone from the NCR here and it was a very important meeting, [censored] I was going to kill that ass who gave me this job. The women in powerarmor was still regarding me down the sights of her gauss rifle as if trying to decide whether or not I was worth the ammo, then she said.

“You have no idea why you are here do you?” her voice was certain, I think she could feel my fear on the metaphysical level! Or maybe it had more to do with the fact that I was covered in the kind of sweat that you only get when you find yourself staring down the barrel of an energy weapon that can literally tear you in half, take your pick. I nodded vigorously and said.

“I was paid five thousand caps to bring this stupid little bottlecap here, do if you could please lower the rifle I would be very happy!” She just shook her head, raised the rifle up to aim at my head, and asked.

“I’m on a secret mission here, why should I let you live?”

“Because I’m gorgeous, handsome, and sixy.” I replied nonchalantly.

“You do realize that the only thing that’s kept you alive this long is the fact that I’m still trying to decide whether or not you’re worth the effort and ammo it would take to kill you, right?” I had to keep up this strategy, I was apparently just interesting enough to warrant continued conversation.

“Aww nuts, so if that’s not it, it must be my razor sharp wit, or maybe it is my sixiness and you don’t want to admit it!” operation stalling was working perfectly, time for my trump card. “There is also the fact that I’m the only one who has the codes to the nukes and without them the device won’t launch them!” she starred at me through her visor incredulously for a moment before responding.

“Are you high?” I put on a big smile and said

“On life baby, I’m high on life!” apparently my pun was so bad that it caused her to briefly plant her palm firmly on her helmet and sigh.

“Ok now I’m not sure what is going on with you but you should probably leave before the NCR shows up, they don’t like it when curriers show up randomly during black ops missions.” Suddenly from behind me I heard the sound of a gun being cocked while I felt it being placed against the back of my skull. in a hard voice someone behind me said.

“She’s right you know, we really don’t.”

Pt3
Remember before when I said I was scared [censored]less, well now I was scared so badly that my entire body had started to shake, I’m a Currier for [censored]s sake not a [censored] soldier. Judging by the rasp in the voice and the way that the words carried I guessed that I was now stuck between two of the most dangerous types of people in the entire Mohave Wasteland. The Ranger veteran pushed the pistol barrel that I guessed to belong to a sequoia into my head with a little more force and said.

“So what exactly is a currier doing at a secret blacktops mission between the two most powerful factions in the Mohave, chose your words with care.” Again with this, although I assumed that I better keep my tongue in control, Veterans have been known to be testy.

“look all I know is that some guy turned up in my office and told me to take this package here, he gave me five thousand caps and told me I would receive another five thousand when I got here, that’s all I know I swear!” the pistol moved away from my head and I felt myself relax slightly before it was suddenly slammed back into place and the Veteran shouted right in my ear.

“Is that all!” [censored] NCR, then again if it were Creaser I would’ve been dead already so eh. I nodded slowly, the pistol was withdrawn and I heard it slip into its holster, then the ranger said. “Well then we have a real problem, because you’re being used for something, and I think that our mission here is compromised, what do you think Paladin?” the women in powerarmor nodded and replied

“The real question is who would have the info about this meeting to send him here and an even better one is why bother!” the Ranger walked around me and into view before asking me

“What’s in the package son?” finally I was being treated like another member of humanity halleluiah.

“It appears to be a bottlecap with a target painted on it” at that the ranger froze then he sprinted away and yelling.

“Drop that package and run that’s a homing beacon for something nasty if I’ve ever heard of one!” I quickly complied as did the Paladin and sprinted after him; from about twenty yards away we heard the sounds of massive explosions that sent spurts of sand high into the air. When we stopped sprinting to look back there were several large craters where we had been standing the deepest one possibly twenty feet deep. “Well I think we know why you were sent here.” The Ranger said.

“I’m just a currier; they don’t pay me enough for this stupid [censored].” I replied while gasping for breath my hands on my knees.

“It still doesn’t explain who knew about us meeting though” said the paladin worriedly; I looked around before saying in a worried voice.

“Umm you guys know where we are right?” they both looked at me for a few seconds before the same realization that I had; we were in the NCR Quarry, the Ranger looked at me and said.

“[censored]!”
