SO are our old save games lost forever?

Post » Fri Nov 13, 2009 12:58 am

Hi all, i decided to register on the forum just to ask this question!

I'm a huuuge fallout fan, i've played all of them from the original all the way to FO:NV! (so I am used to some bugs)

Unfortunately, my experience with FO:NV has been an exercise in futility, as it seems all i can do is have my game freeze up and require hard shutdowns of my 360, and it seems all my savegames are now corrupted, even with me having tons of saves just in case....

What i need to know FROM A DEV or MOD is:

Now that the patch is out, are our old game saves now all useless? Is there going to be a way to make them work again? I'm already like 25 hours in, i have done so much already, I honestly feel like IF the saves are really gone forever due to the DLC error or whatever else is causing this catastrophic corruption, then i have no desire to continue on "re-do"ing it all over..

:(

And this from a person who spent upwards of 300 hours on Fallout 3~

Like i said, i am a die-hard wanderer of the waste, but this is really disheartening for everyone who was a loyal fan and spent the $60 on launch night..

So please, can a DEV or a MOD please let us know if all our time is going to be wasted, or will an upcoming patch fix this?

I understand many members here have an opinion on this matter, but please, let the DEVS or MODS confirm or deny this-

As loyal customers, you owe at least this much to us, let us know if our time has been wasted, or can we eventually continue on where we left off?

thanks!

:)

Only the devs would truly know, moderators have no inside information.

Still, in almost all cases patches that fix save corruption only fix the causes of the corruption. But once a save is corrupt it stays corrupt. If you have a corrupt save now that you can't load, it's unlikely that a patch will ever fix that.

I want to know this as well.

I also want to know that if we have to start over that the problem is indeed fixed for good.

We deserve some sort of response.

thanks for the replies, i was hoping a DEV would be kind enough to clear this major question up for all of us-

should i stop playing until a new patch comes out to fix our old saves or, do we have to start all over to get the benefits of the patches?

PLEASE give us an answer, DEVS!!

You know, I think we're all actually pretty lucky that this bug is popping out so early in the game. I know it seems like a lot of time, but I've had much much worse. Remember Assassin's Creed 2? A lot of people had a game breaking glitch on the very last level of the game, I think I personally spent about 30 or so hours on it, hit the glitch, and had nothing to do but restart from the beginning and make sure I didn't save right before the last level the second time around. Worst still, not a glitch of the game, but definitely a hardware glitch of horrible proportions, had gotten to level 61 in Borderlands with two characters, had found my favorite gun of all time, and the most perfect spread of secondary weapons and shields, and my harddrive randomly bricked. I probably had put over a hundred+ hours into that thing, between farming Crawmerax on solo and everything to finally get weapons that I loved, and the worst part is that with the random weapon generating system of Borderlands, I can never get any of that stuff back again if I tried, because it's randomly generated! Hell, I lost all of my Fo3 saves to that too.

Seriously, ten hours of lost time? Give me a break, that's not that bad.

Sure, I'll give you a break...but what about not being able to play it until it's fixed? Why should we put another 10 hours of game time into a broken game only to have the issue happen again. So that 10 hours of no big deal time just turned into 20. I don't care about the lost saves, I just want to know if the issue is resolved. I can't play the game until it's fixed.

That's not the issue I was commenting on. It's a big deal to not be able to do that quest, I know, but I mean the people that are saying even if they fix it, that they'll never get over the ten hours that they lost. If it never gets fixed, or even doesn't get fixed promptly, I'll be pissed/bummed too, but I'm just saying the ones that are saying they'll never play again even if it's fixed because of ten hours lost could really really have it a lot worst, like many have.

The Come Fly With Me quest though, doesn't seem to be part of the main storyline though, unless I'm mistaken. Why not just avoid that sidequest until the fix?

THIS

MINOR SPOILERS -

I ended up deleting my saves and starting over. The bug I ran into was that Mark of Caesar one, so after the patch, I tried from my last save before entering the lake area installation (Cottonwood?) When that didn't work, I reverted to the last save I had BEFORE being approached by the Legion leader guy outside the 38 Casino, thinking if the quest hadn't been activated yet, maybe I could then activate it fresh and it would work. When I left the casino the Legion guy didn't approach me, instead he walked to the Freeside gate and left??? So I checked my quest page and it was already listed in my quests, therefore still showing as active, even though I had made the save before meeting him. Broken. So I deleted my saves and will start over and hope for the best. Chance to redo some small mistakes, I suppose...

I don't care whether it is 2 hours or 25 hours or 250 hours of gameplay.

If I buy a car, I don't expect the fuel tank randomly develops a hole after 250 miles of driving.

If I buy a book, I don't expect to read it to find that there are 40 pages missing in the middle.

And, (I think you can see where this is going), if I buy a video game, I don't expect it to be unplayable.

Firstly, Losing xX time of gameplay is VERY frustrating, it's also depressing, and it males people mad.
Secondly, not knowing what the exact issue is makes people scared to play further, which means not only have you lost xX time of gameplay, but you are losing the will and confidence to play the game at all.

You can call everyone here sooks whingers and cry-baby's, but the simple fact remains that we purchased something that doesn't work, and we are all eager to see it get fixed.
As much as I love the game, the environment, and was thoroughly enjoying my game experience till it all went pear shaped I can totally understand people getting mad enough to just rebox it and take it back.

All that being said - my patience is not forever.

I'll post this again, as it seems people are somewhat daft concerning this issue. Your already corrupted saves will never, not ever be fixed. EVER. The patches they have released and will release can fix the bugs that cause the corruption, but not the save files.

Think of it like this. For the sake of argument let's say that save files have 100 blocks of information.

You played for 10 hours and got save corruption after doing the "Come Fly With Me" quest. Your save file is missing blocks 3-12, 26-49 and 87-91. Another player managed to play for 16 hours before falling victim to this bug. His save file is missing blocks 20-60 and 71-73.

Now, tell me how they're suppose to release a patch that fixes your missing blocks and his missing blocks. How is it supposed to know who's missing what? How's a patch supposed to access and repair save files that can't be read because they're corrupted?

I actually got an email from Bethesda today saying that they were looking into this issue and asked me a few questions regarding how the errors occurred. I sent a trouble ticket in wednesday when i got the DLC error message. So there still may be hope or not...

heh, I almost also posted my Oblivion (on 360) and Morrowind (on PC ) hours logged!

/off topic
I also am about at 500 hours in Oblivion if you account for my 2 playthroughs as different types of characters, and about 200 on Morrowind as well! crazy! I guess these games are just that addicting!
/end offtopic

As for the lost gamesaves, i am going to just try and hold out hope they can somehow fix em..cmon Obsidian! you can do it! (quickly, i hope)

as much as it kills me, i guess i am going to have to give up on exploring New Vegas for awhile..

*sighs*

I really hope Bethesda uses a brand new engine for The Elder Scrolls V!!

My save from around 27 or so hours in can't load due to the DLC bug.

But I started playing again from one roughly 25 hours in, and I'm not gonna save over anything. I hope this **** starts working soon.

wow, i can't believe this is taking Obsidian/Bethesda so long to figure all this out..

why couldn't this happen to the beta testers, not the general public?

I honestly wish they would have just pushed back the launch a month and ironed all this out before releasing it for $60!!

I love Fallout so much, and this is like seeing your favorite football team that won the Super Bowl Last year coming out and fumbling the first snap, then throws all interceptions and then the star quarterback injures himself by repeatedly smacking himself in the face, then the Goodyear blimp bursts into flames and crashes into the stadium, killing the entire team as it sat on the bench!

Yeah this is the worst launch blunder I've ever seen. There is a problem with the game. It happens and I know they're working on it. We're likely gonna lose whatever time we've put into this game so far and have to start over. What really gets me is that we can't even start over right now because we have no idea if the same thing will happen and we have no word from Obsidian or Bethesda at all.

I just found this small statement from a couple days ago in one of their pinned posts at the top of the general forum.

"On consoles, we are aware that a small group of 360 users are seeing a DLC warning which is preventing you from loading save games. We are absolutely looking into this bug now, along with other reports of save game corruption. It is our highest priority right now that we find out what is causing it. In the meantime, we recommend you save often, and revert to an older save if this occurs."

I don't think this group is small anymore...

It sounds to me like you haven't seen the error yourself. I'm only holding onto the fact that this is patchable, because it seems to me that the files are necessarily corrupt...I think corrupt is the term people are using because the game, obviously, will not load saved games. I'm a victim of this too...I ALWAYS make multiple save files, and currently, all 5 of my manual saves AND my auto-save won't load. It seems to me just that for some reading, having played the games WITH the pre-order DLC, for some reason something happens and the game no longer sees the DLC, hence making the save game void. I'm HOPING all they have to do is figure out some way to make the save files read that DLC and be good.

But, i'm no programmer, so I'm purely hoping. And as others have said...25 hours. Does that svck to lose, yes. Am I COMPLETELY opposed to starting a new character? Absolutely not...but I feel until I know for certain that this bug will not appear, it's not worth my time to create another toon.

Thats the saddest thing about all this...I don't feel it's safe to play yet.

Just got my copy, I am a very slow player, I really like to soak in the atmosphere without rushing through ( 7 hours and only just found 5 locations LOL! ). Just waiting for the problems to start and my saves to get stuffed!

Anyway, my point is why on earth weren't these bugs found on beta/game testing? Surely that's what the game testers are paid for?! I seriously advice Bethesda to think about firing their testers 'cos they seem to have missed every single bloody game killing bug in the damn game! However the cynic in me seems to be thinking that Bethesda set a release date and the PR people had done all the work and there was no way they could delay the release so someone, who needs shooting, decided to just release a broken product and fix the minor issues anyone finds, on the fly! Sadly it appears these aren't simply minor issues and some pretty serious problems rendering a product almost unusable.

Thousands have paid $60/£40 and Bethesda must have made an absolute mint out of this! This is not some tin-pot iPhone app we paid 99c/59 pence for. I bet they could fund a small third-world country on the money they have raked in over the last week, but still no fix. I appreciate it's not instant but with enough people reporting this and the amount of resources Bethesda have at their disposal, there must be some way Bethesda can get their hands on a 360 with a set of broken save files and fix this?!

I take it Bethesda do read the industry press? They do realise a lot gaming forums are slating their product in public, some even telling people not to bother buying it yet. Bethesda PR, all that hard work you have done promoting this game is slowly disappearing down the plughole, some serious damage limitation is in order as even true fans of the Fallout series only have so much patience!

Cheers!

yeah, i think it's time for Bethesda/Obsidian to at least come on the forums here and give us some kind of time frame for a fix or at least a new "we understand you are hurting, and we are assuredly working on it"

It's been days since an official announcement about all this!

they released the 1st patch for 360, and have not even posted about it, letting us know just what it fixed or did not fix! yeesh!

This is complete bull [censored]. I tried to return the game at Wal Mart tonight and they wouldn't let me, due to copy right laws. So just so you know, if you try to return your game because...IT DOESN'T WORK....YOU CANT!! Also, Gamestop was willing to give me a whole $20 cash or $25 store credit. Are you FKKKKING KIDDING ME???!!! I just bought this game one week ago, on its RELEASE DATE, for $60. 20 hours into the game, and I can't even load my game. This is ridiculous. By far the worst experience I've had with any video game EVER, and I've been playing games for years. I am so pissed at this company right now. I believe they should recall this product, because it does NOT, work, correctly. I expect my money back from Bethesda. I did not get what I paid for and have lost a lot of respect for them. Morrowind, Oblivion, and even Fallout 3 were fantastic. There is no excuse for this S_H_I_T!!! They need to do something about this RIGHT NOW! Who agrees with me?

Return to Fallout: New Vegas
