Elder Scrolls: game idea and combat ideas(I'd like feed back

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 11:42 pm

Ok so i've been thinking about these two things for awhile now and i feel i want to get them out there and get more feedback that just a few friends. These are my ideas.

1) Combat: combat has been improving in the game to where we now have fatalities, duel wield, and certain effects on weapons in talent trees(bleed or +crit etc). But i feel it still isn't there yet. Don't get me wrong, fatalities are stunning, duel wield was a great idea and i love the talent trees, but i feel the combat could use some sprucing up. Like i was duel wielding swords and just slicing up a dragon. But i just felt it was hit hit hit kill. No real class. What if they added things like special attacks in the trees and ways to duck out of attacks. I know they have a roll but what if they added back steps, dodges, and special attacks like lets say a block breaker for some two hand weapons. Or maybe when duel-wielding two weapons you slice up the enemy 5-8 times for like 80% of weapons max damage each hit really fast. Abilities that would add more zing to the game. No just hide behind boulders or quick to inventory heal i mean dodges, rolls, other kinds or evasive moves and adding special attacks. Like one reason i prefer to play monster hunter rather than elder scrolls(when its fighting some boss there vs. a Skyrim dragon) is because you have a chance to dodge, duck, block, and you keep pace to attack. Skyrim is amazing i cannot stress that enough, the immersion in all of Bethesda's game has been incredible, but i feel they could add to the combat. I mean they have a fatigue bar(aka stamina) so why hold back? Please give me some feedback on this, i really would like others to add their opinions to this.

2) i already see how Bethesda has a great story going for them now, the arena and Hammerfell i feel were kinda out there, but now theres a good story line being followed through and i'm on edge for the next one. But heres an idea i'm just throwing out. Feel open in anyway to give opinions, mock, but i just wana put it out there. The Elder Scrolls: Godwars. In this version imagine if there was a war. Between the 9 Divine and the Daedra lords. And you had the neutral party in between The dread lord Sithis. It could go as an rpg or as a kind of RTS. My idea though is to have it as an RPG(Bethesda does these the best ^_^) where you choose a side and it kinda works as a factions system. Join one and you have access to their stuff, awesome gear, weapons, and etc. and each faction has their own special spells and abilities. Not only that but then choosing who to serve gives you even more powerful armor, weapons, and abilities. Akatosh's flame, The dread lords Chill, and so on. As well as that it would not only cover a bunch of the world of the Elder Scroll's series, but also the daedra lord's dominions, and the divines heavenly domains. I mean we saw the planes of Oblivion, and hearing some of what these other areas are like makes me jumpy just thinking about it. But anyways this is just an idea.

Just felt like putting these out there and seeing what others think. I personally think that Bethesda already does an incredible job as is and i can't wait to see what they bring up next. Either way it'll be worth its weight in gold and we're all going to be watching the trailer non-stop until it comes out XD. Anyways, let me know what you think.

To put it bluntly, your second idea is flawed. For example, men and mer are already walking on the heavenly domains; the aedra gave their very existence to make the world as we know today: Nirn. Some daedric realms are impossible to reach, or are impossible to travel through, such as malacath's ashpit, mephala's web and nocturnal's evergloam (as it has been taken over by daedra serving mehrunes dagon). Besides, it's impossible to fit the gods in two groups: good and evil. The aedra and daedra are seperated because of their part in the creation in the mortal realm. The aedra helped Lorkhan shaping the world, giving parts of their very soul to create it, and the daedra didn't take part in it. Using our standards, most daedric princes are "evil", but they don't do evil things just for the sake of being evil.
As for your idea of factions: I don't think it would work out in the end, considering what I have written above. IMO it also sounds very un-elder scrollsish.

If you want to read a bit about the story behind everything, I recommend you reading the article 'how to become a lore buff' in the lore section of the forum. It's interesting to read, and you learn quite a lot from it too. http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1112211-how-to-become-a-lore-buff/

Wait, didn't Sul and Attrebus reb go there in Lord of Souls? Or is this why everyone else seems to hate Lord of Souls :P

But yeah, what he said, but with a little more 'the Daedra Lords would never work together and the Aedra never do anything anyway'.

Thanks for the feedback on that, glad to know now godwars wouldn't work(though i still find them all fighting awesome). Though i still think the combat mechanics being enhanced would be cool. Cat thanks for that idea too! basically i'm just up for finding a better combat mechanic system so it isn't just hit, block, and power hit. Thats my main point. One thing about god was though would be the split up wouldn't be just daedra and going into realms was a smaller idea, the main idea was that whole good and evil thing. But yea sigh* i'll just keep that in my epic dreams XD. But please now that i know that Godwars would be a bad idea, what about combat? Let me hear thoughts on that!

It is technically possible, but one would die without alteration magics to levitate, breath magically and some sort of navigation, such as a daedra to show the way. By the way, they have worked together once. It was the time when Jyggylag's personality was split into Sheogorath, and it was reflected on the Shivering Isles.

From what I've seen, the M&M Dark Messiah combat system would be awesome.

Your comment makes more sense now, yeah. In LoS they were protected by Malacath.

Ah, I haven't finished Shivering yet - never really liked Oblivion.

It is!

Mount & Blade + Dark Messiah are definitely the kind of games i'd like to see TES take inspiration from when it comes to combat. Basically, realistic and immersive (almost sim style) 1st person combat.

Unfortunately though, they seem to be drifting more and more down the arcadey, cinematic 3rd person route... which is a shame.

Heck while their at it heres another sweet idea. I know that there technically are not any classes in the series, but there are the stones! The warrior, the thief, the shadow, the steed. What if they gave these stones a kind of class system. Like with the added talent trees you could advance stars up ranks in some way(still thinking about it) and advancing up ranks/talents/levels (call it whatever) adds to that class and helps make things like the steed more widely used since they would all have their own kind of bonus. Like make the warrior also have its own abilities and have maybe rising strength, etc increases. I really want to see special moves that are not just random fatalities, though those fatalities are freaking sweet, mixing up combat with special abilities i think would add to how into the game the combat would be. Btw the frost freezing the ground and fire burning stuff, awesome idea! You have no idea how disappointed i was when i was just starting Skyrim and realized my fire spell couldn't burn near anything to a crisp! Making these kind of spells more into the game would help with realism, and immersion. Heck not only all of this, heres another cool idea, Acolyte mentioned levitation and i couldn't get it out of my head...In that 1 destruction skill book levitation spells were mentioned! And dragon priests could do it! Add that into the game for some sweet mage action! Like find a way to make it not completely over powered and its all good! Then again their still having trouble with ice spells(as a lv 3 mage i solo'd giants with ice spike) but if they add things like these into the game...it would just be incredible.
Heck make it an online game where you can que up in matching systems and find a way they can divide loot up evenly and it would just be perfect. Like make it so you could que with friends or random players into "dungeons" or "arenas". Dungeons would hold randomly simulated dungeons like with Left for dead's random level generator, with random loot(some way they'd have to find a way to divide it evenly and fairly), and arenas are you team up against tougher monsters for greater rewards(i miss cyrodi's coliseum! I mean they have a heal other spell, and face it, who uses that? Get some better combat and multiplayer for this series and it would just steal most of the MMO market XD. Any comments on this idea? I'd like to hear em ^_^

Personally, I feel that combat needs to be based more on an "opposed" system, where your skills versus the opponent's skills affect how the animations play out (weapon speed, accuracy, and chance for them to evade or block). If you're fighting a more skillful opponent, then you should find them harder to hit, they should be more likely to dodge, block, or parry, and you should be able to MISS. If you're fighting a mudcrab or shopkeeper, then they should be almost impossible not to hit.

Daggerfall and Morrowind made the underlying "die rolls" too blatantly obvious, and based it on an "absolute" skill system, so the defensive abilities of the opponent were only marginally taken into account. You could (and usually did) miss against slow and clumsy mudcrabs or other unskilled opponents at low level, which was frustrating and unrealistic. Oblivion made it impossible to miss if you as a player aimed at the target, regardless of how unskilled your character or how highly skilled your opponent was, which was equally unrealistic. Something "in between" strikes me as necessary for anything that bills itself as an RPG, rather than a straight-up "hack and slash" game. Both systems were "half right", but "half wrong".

Damage should be about weapon stats, modified by strength and up or down by "margin of success", so a more skillful player should be more LIKELY to do greater damage, but not guaranteed to. A less skillful opponent would not only hit less often, but be less likely to do a lot of damage, but COULD with a lucky hit. In reality, any unskilled weapon wielder with an axe or large hammer can kill someone with a single well-placed shot (by accident, even); skill only increases the odds of that happening. Likewise, it takes almost NO skill to hit a stationary target, but one that's dodging, blocking, parrying, and trying to hit you back is going to be very difficult to hit if you don't know how to fight effectively with the weapon. In such cases, you'll probably be focusing most of your attention into not getting hit, rather than hitting, or else you're a suicidal lunatic. The systems used in the games, where you simply bash each other until one runs out of hitpoints, really don't reflect that reality at all.

Too true! One reason i said take a look at the monster hunter combat series. You HAVE TO dodge. No amount of gear or power changes that, standing still hack& slash gets you killed. If they update the system and get that other half right, it would be just too good. Any feedback on my online idea's though? I'd like to hear others opinions of getting this so it can be played offline or online, that would just be too cool!

In my opinion "Future Elder Scrolls Games" should be it's own sub-forum. Confining the whole HUGE discussion topic to one thread seems bit counter-productive to me. Like, we're missing out on a whole bunch of awesome polls, awesome game ideas, and awesome discussions spawned by said awesome game ideas. Because the whole thing's been squashed into one tiny thread!!!

P.S. Not trying to start any fights, just stating my opinion.

OH!!!!!! Dude!!! I just got THE BEST idea!!! What if in this "Godwars" game, you could travel between all of the daedric planes! I know it doesn't sound like that great of an idea. But just imagine the fun you could have travelling between 9 or so VASTLY different environments, each about the size of The Shivering Isles (Or Larger). All the crazy, "unreal" environments would be a great change of pace after Skyrim and Oblivion.

Edit: Oh, wait, you pretty much said exactly that in your original post... ^.^' Oops. Ah well, still an awesome idea!!!

No, thanks for the encouragement, though as stated previously due to lore that would be difficult, though i have yet to give up! What if it was something like he roots of all of the world of Elder scroll's creation! This would help them with lore immensely, and just imagine, all of them actually open! I mean face it, when you hear about lady Mara's realm of all that awesome and the tower, you were dying to check it out! But the main idea of it was the battle field on the actual world, the other area's of existence were for maybe some epic sieges, attacks, espionage, etc. but the heart of the battle would be the ground we walk on in our games today! And 9 environments, one reason i don't wana push the idea is because its more then that, this is like, once they have epically done everywhere they want and the storyline fully into every area. they shouldn't be pushed to come up with everything, yes when i say everything i mean everything! This is why it would be best later. The final scraps of lore for lore junkies, huge battles, a true test of future gaming, with all forms of new combat, spells, abilities, and great rpg elements, heck bring it online! But the # of area's? Every daedric realm(at least sheogorath's shivering isles size maybe slightly bigger or smaller) and all the divine that fought. Not just that, but add all the area's of the map into it! Heres an idea:
Your in the misty jungles of Elswyer, on a smallish boat floating down the river to join with the rest of Akatosh's forces in the area to lead an assault on a daedric lord's stronghold, when suddenly, an ambush! Soldiers everywhere flying from vines, climbing up the vines as you pull out your weapons, spells, and heck maybe even explosives XD and prepare to fight to the last for the glory of Akatosh! The battle is hard, many of your soldiers are being killed, though you slaughter a good deal of enemy soldiers, it is you and two friends as all that remains, as you prepare to be swept to the next life as the enemy soldiers make a rallying cry and charge to finish you off, you hear a whisper in your ear to roar with all your might, Akatosh hears you...then the flames of Akatosh shoot fourth like a bright and holy fire, smiting your foes! As you look up with a feeling of gratitude and send Akatosh your prayers of thanks for his help, you stand up, with your friends, and prepare to head to the camp and prepare the assault on the stronghold, the battle might have been won, but the war was yet to come, just then rain starts to pick up, clouds grow heavy and dark, and as you pass by the last bits of vegetation you come to the desert it meets, you see the camp with a glimmer of hope, then stare at your target, the dark stronghold of an unholy daedric alliance, filled with probably hundreds of elite guards, this fight would not be easy, but you shall push forward, Akatosh gives you strength!

Thats basically what i in vision, i got tons of other battle scenes, but currently it would be best that this idea lay in my dreams and on the forums ^_^, i'll send a letter about it to the company once their combat mechanics improve, and as they near the end of expanding the Elder scroll's world. Tell me whatcha think!

And btw yea i know whatcha mean, i just wanted to post these things out, sorry if it seems i'm trying to hog forums space, i just couldn't think of a better title >.<. But i just wanted some feedback on these idea's and maybe some add-ons from people with their own idea's. But yea i know whatcha mean, i'll come up with a better title next time >.<. Sorry about that.

It's interesting in theory, but frankly I didn't like any of the representations of Daedric realms presented in Oblivion, including Shivering Isles. They didn't feel alien at all, like I could have just traveled to any other province and seen the same. Heck, the in-game book descriptions of provinces are generally more interesting than what we got with the realms of oblivion. I wouldn't count on them to do justice to a whole clod of them at once if they wouldn't do it focusing on one.

It's also worth noting that in modern gaming, the graphical aspect consumes a large portion of development time/money. Compared to making 9 different completely different areas, it would be far easier to make one landmass twice the size of all of them combined. With that in mind it would make it even more likely that these different realms would more or less be boring re-textures of each other.

Sigh, yea thats one of the downsides to the idea, but hey, i can dream that one day it would be that good! Btw, though you say Shivering Isles wasn't different, i found at least a good deal of it all new, sure the ground and water were either same, and sure some vegetation was recognizable, but a good deal of it i though seemed at least to help portray this new environment, though i know whatcha mean, they need to out do themselves and just make the place freaking alien, i mean these are daedric realms and so on.

The impression I got from Shivering Isles was mostly "hi I'm Morrowind". Half of the island was dismal swamp with mushroom trees, and the other half was bright and colorful with mushroom trees. While I realize this was undoubtedly an attempt to grab back some Morrowind fans who felt alienated by Oblivion, unsubtle mimicry is not the way to go. Especially for a place that was supposed to represent some kind of physical plane of madness, "Earth with new plants" is already underwhelming, but making it look almost exactly like an actual place in that fictional world we've already been to just made it seem flat uninspired. Perhaps my impression is colored by the fact that to me the mimicry felt insultingly pandering, but if they hadn't clearly told us as much I certainly wouldn't have expected I'd stumbled into another dimension.

True, the butterfly opening i thought was genius, and Sheogorath's my favorite character ^_^, but yea creating an unterlly new area would be a game on its own. Why i feel if this idea ever took place, it should be farther in the future, with more available awesome ideas an techniques for enhancing these daedric worlds.

I very strongly support you ideas, though i think it would be a little more interesting for the game to go toward an RTS style. I have actually thought out most of the game, and how to keep it on track with the Elder Scrolls story line. I find it kind of funny because I posted a topic like this yesterday, and they locked it just because I mentioned multi-player and there's already a thread for that. But I would like to talk to you and compare ideas to maybe see if we can help each other with them at all. My idea was actually a first person RTS style game, which I know sounds slightly odd but I have worked out how to make it work.

The second idea is scrap. People have pointed most things out, but Sithis is not a god, nor is it an entity. Sithis is just nothing. It's not a person, it can't think. It's kinda like gravity. It's just there. Sithis is silence and nothing and dark. Anu is every sound all at once, and pure light. Different combinations of Sithis and Anu produce everything else in the universe. Everything is made of different combinations of nothing and everything.

Wait.....if Sithis is nothing.....then how does he "gain power" from the assassinations in The Dark Brotherhood?
