merge ESPs

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 1:39 am

I was wondering if it's possible to merge the esps in a mod like http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=19445
I wanted to do this to cut down the number of esps since i already run stuff like Unique Landscapes complete with all the needed compatability patches so it takes up a large chunk of the mod limit even when merge patched..

I'm relatively new to the CS and tools so if it's possible please explain how?

thanks

That mod looks like a good candidate to try merging (despite the description of "all files put together").

http://tescosi.com/wiki/Plugin_Merging on how to merge. You'll need to download http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=8665. I've merged quite few mods, it's not hard. Personally, the only thing I do different from the tutorial is I don't number them 1, 2, 3. I number them all 1, 1, 1. That way if there's a conflict the merge fails, which is what I want. If you're unsure, though, it's always better to start with small merges; mods that add buyable items are prime candidates.

One pitfall to watch out for is to be aware that you'll lose any items in existing games if you rename the esp. You can save items from only one of the merged files by giving it the same file name. For example if you merge "NewClothes.esp", "NewWeapons.esp" and "NewArmor.esp", you can rename your merged plug-in "NewArmor.esp" and keep the armors but lose the clothes and weapons. Or whatever your preference. New games won't be a problem, which is why it's best to merge whatever plug-ins before you start a new game.

When you merge files, the old files will still be intact. Make sure you keep them somewhere safe so you can restore them if something goes wrong. I highly advise keeping a record of exactly what you merged, either a text file or a folder that says "These mods went into this mod" or something.

I know there are others here who have done a fair bit of merging, so I'm sure they'll have some useful advice too.

Another point to watch out for if you are using Wrye Bash (and if you are pushing the number of mods limit you should be), is that you have to pay attention to the bash tags (if any) each mod has. You can't have the bash tags for your merged plugin only apply to some of your merged mods: it's all or nothing. So you need to be sure 1) the tags aren't mutually exclusive, and 2) all apply to all the included mods in your new plugin.

Thanks :) I've merged it and outside of some SPEL naming conflicts which Gecko renamed it went well.. hopefully it works as that's 7 less ESPs in my load order :)

BTW I think the mod author just meant that it was all parts in one download not that it was one ESP.. oh well :)
