Skyrim Level Up System?

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 6:44 pm

Ayeah, I remember other things too.

In Skyrim, it was boring as hell to complete quests because they never really offered me anything.
I mean, I want a level cap at some point but quests not giving exp? It gave me no reason to try and complete them.
If a quest was about "Heal soldiers attacking X they need a priest!" then the purpose o the quest would be to get my Restoration skill up.
But it never felt like that in Skyrim, I was sent down to dungeons all the time.

The dungeons became repetitive, the loot was standard and the quest rewards were utter crap.
I had no incentive to continue, no motivation to do anything, I had the armor I wanted, I had the axe I wanted, what else is there for me to do?
Experience points is a great way to reward players for doing things, and I mean anything, cause even if I get experience points for hacking a computer with no plans on raising Science any higher then I can use the skill points I get at level up for things I do want to increase.

But quest in particular, in Skyrim, I don't really feel like doing anything.
The quests have mostly crap writing and just send me down to more dungeons and I don't get items I need or want and to top it off I don't even get any experience points.
Even if I got a crap weapon I don't need in a Fallout quest at least I would get experience points to make it worth while, and of course good writing... And not being sent down a dungeon...

Also, I like freedom.
In Fallout I have a great sense of freedom as I know I can do whatever I want and get the character to be what I wrote him out to be.
But in Skyrim I feel this pressure on me, that the only way for me to get the character I wrote him/her out to be is through forcing myself through hours of gameplay in a linear fashion.

Skyrim, ironically, felt linear with character progression, in order to get Speech up I had to do X.
While in Fallout, I have freedom with character progression, so that if I want to get speech up then I can, I don't have to search for characters to dialogue my way through and I don't have to sell items one by one for Barter. I simply do things, level up, and take what I want.

Learn by doing is more realistic on paper, but ultimately, it's a game and it's meant to entertain you and let you have fun, and too much realism isn't fun. At least not for me.

I agree, that experience should be some kind of award for quests. But I don't like the quests that give me tons of experience that I level up 3 times.

Are there any such quests? O_o
I mean, I modded my FNV so that I get x5 times more experience points because I think it's a drag it takes so long to finalize my character so for me I can get a couple of levels for a quest, but vanilla?

One can gain more levels during a quest.. (I actually am not sure about FO3) but in NV... , kills, hacks and lockpicks etc... experience gain for quests is leveled...
Depending on your level gained XP is less at lower levels than on higher levels... One can easily gain a level with some meathy quests when done early.. (Come Fly with Me and There stands the grass.. spring to mind).. But multiple levels is a combination of both kills and quest Xp. (i think)

Oh grinding is easy Thorgal Ageirson, though tedious.

With specific skills yes... but some skills, least of all archery and destruction can not be grinded easily. (but yes in all cases it is tedious...)

Why give Skyrims leveling system to Fallout? So we can all call Fallout even a more TES re-skin?

I think there was an instance where I got a whole bunch and went up 2 or 3 levels. I probably was close to leveling in the first place and a low level.

I also personally like taking time to level up, feels more rewarding when you finally level up to me.

I had a similar situation and leveled up 2 levels at once, but I had no problem with that, as it was still relatively early in the game and it seemed worthwhile for what I had accomplished, and most of the time it did take a long time between leveling up anyway, so getting that extra level boost at the time made it even more helpful and exciting.

this thread needed a poll, since it is rather straight forward and I think I can conclude that the vast majority agree in not having Skyrim's leveling system.

Would you prefer the Skyrim level up system in Fallout 4 or the normal fallout 3 and New Vegas system?
Neither. I'd hope for the system we had in the original games.
A series should not just be the IP characters, place-names, and a back story; it should also define (and stay true to) a gaming experience in it's gameplay mechanics.
Fallout 3's leveling system was not true to the series' mechanics, and Skyrim's is a complete about face from it.

I think the Fallout system, the way you level up and have SPECIAL and traits and perks, is probably my favorite system of any game ever. So keep it, please.

No. The Fallout way is for Fallout and has been since the first game was released.

While I do like the system in Skyrim, that should stay in Skyrim. The SPECIAL/Perks/Attributes system that's used in the Fallout games should remain. I mean, I like being within about 6-7 levels, having full speech skill, I like being a silver tongued devil until I'm strong enough in my own right to be able to take on the enemies I'd otherwise have to talk to.

Skyrim's "leveling system"? No way, keep that [censored] away from (what's left of) Fallout.

It seems like this topic comes up a lot, either brought up by Fallout fans fearful of the increased TESification of Fallout, or by TES fans who believe every game should be a Skyrim clone.

I'm not exactly Bethesda's most staunch defender, but I can't believe they would seriously consider this. The Fallout 3 system worked fine for Fallout. I don't see a ton of customers complaining about gaining XP. The only people who would be pleased by a move like this are the most fanatical Elder Scrolls fans, who will buy and adore everything gamesas creates anyway, and I think Bethesda knows this.

Introducing the Elder Scrolls leveling system into Fallout would gain them nothing.

Besides, modders will make the learn by doing gameplkay at some point anyway: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=45604
So the developers should focus on the old formula, let the modders Elder Scrollize it.

I think that sums it up rather nicely.

Skyrim's 'levelling' system, as Gab has pointed out has its share of problems. Id rather try to keep the next levelling system as close to how it should be as feasibly possible. Or in other words, lets do our best to keep TES out of FO
