Can anyone recommend some "essential" New Vegas mods

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 2:39 pm

I got the game for Xbox 360 on release and have beaten a good portion of the game but now I have it for PC and am wondering about some mods to get for it.
They do not really have to be essential but I am looking for retexture packs, more weapons. More armor. New areas and quests. Stuff like that.

Non-lightsaber energy swords are also something id like to get my hands on.

Specs.
Win7 64 Bit
Intel i7CPU Q720 @1.60GHz (8CPUs)
8129 MB RAM or 8GB of RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730
Roughly 1GB of VRAM

I'd like to add to GhostNull's list http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=35998. I haven't used any other weather mods, but this one so far is working really well and it also comes with a great darker nights adjuster to really make use of nightvision goggles and Electro-City.

You'll also need the http://nvse.silverlock.org/ for some mods, most notably Project Nevada.

The http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=36901 is not essential, but it simplifies the modding process. I'd recommend you get the NVSE first and then the Manager if you want it before downloading anything. I'd also recommend downloading each mod separately to see if they work fine and if anything does go wrong you know who the culprit is.

Note: The Vault-Tec Power Armour comes with the Project Nevada Equipment Module so getting them both would be redundant.

Thanks guys I took a look at all of them and they look great.

Any strait bladed energy swords by any chance? In the flavor of but not Jiangwei's Shocksword? I am going to be RP a 12th century Weapons master who was abducted by aliens and kept alive and experimented on for centuries. He escaped and made it down to Earth and wandered the wastelands for a few years before carving out a name for himself and becoming a New Vegas courier. He prefers older weapons but finds they lack the power to take on most enemies of the modern world. Is there anything for this guy in particular?

Character customization enhancers are also welcome!

Howdy pardner,

made it into the sacred halls of PC gaming just recently, too, and had my first weekend playing it.
I'm also on a Laptop, i7-Q2670m, 6770m, so slightly better but yet comparable specs.
Definetly get Fallout Mod Manager, the Mod Configuration Menu and the FVSE Script Extender, with the 4gb enabler located on the same site
Concerning the visual enhancers, you have to look carefully what to install.
Some of the weather mods and texture packs are extremely taxing on the Graphics Card, and mobile GPUs like yours or mine are no GTX580s.
I've tried out Project Reality, and it is arguably the best looking weather mod, using an incredible skybox, and comes with a number of cool effects like HeatHaze, dynamic DoF and peripheral Motion Blur.
Sadly, it absolutely killed my FPS. I got 8-20 FPS with it activated, and 45-60 without it.
So go with Lobotomites suggestion and get Nevada Skies. That mod didn't hit my system at all.
In general, it has a very vibrant feel with warm and saturated colours.

Use that mod here to change its looks at your leisure

Electro City Imaginator
http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=39619

Of course, get the Electro City main mod, too. It adds much to the atmosphere at nights.

One thing you'll also need when playing with Nevada Skies is this

Flashlight NVSE
http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=39968

As the name inidcates, this adds some flashlights to the game.
And with the darker nights of Nevada Skies (or any other dark night mod), you *will* need those.

Also, leave your fingers off Texture Packs with 4096x4096 textures.
This thing here makes the wasteland prettier and doesn't hit your system too hard.

Poco Bueno Texture Pack
http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=42028

And at last a mod, that adds a lot of fixed to the game, plenty of new items, even some locations and a re-balancing of a lot of enemies(=made much harder)

FOOK
http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=34684

Have fun, I played through the game 5 times on the PS3, and still, playing it with all these enhancers @ around 50fps in average is such a blast. :D

Lol i actually got into PC gaming awhile back but never got any games like Oblivion or Fallout 3/New Vegas. I was mostly playing RTS games, some TBS and other strategy games while using my console for more RPG/action oriented games. Been modding Morrowind and Oblivion since May of last year and Skyrim since it came out. Just got New Vegas and Fallout 3 over Christmas as they were dirt cheap!

I am definitely favoriting this thread though. Thanks for the input! Keep it coming!

Load Orders going to be a problem for any of these mods?

Load orders can become an issue. Study the readme files of the mods, they will tell you how to proceed.
Also you can have a look at youtube.
Browse for
"Fallout New Vegas Mod Clinic" or "Modding Fallout New Vegas" from Gopher, a mod author himself who made these excellent tutorials.
Her covers the most popular mods, always showing how install them, where to put them in the load order, etc.
Very insightful and informative.

For load orders it is highly recommended to download and use http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=44745 as it will sort your mods properly. Not every mod is covered however but it's not too much of a problem really, the major and more popular mods are generally covered.

FNVEdit is another must-have tool to download. The two most important functions are mod cleaning and making a Merged Patch. There's a handy http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=38413 that you can read through and learn about both. I think one of the aforementioned tutorials from Gopher covers FNVEdit as well.

The only thing I found closest to a straight-bladed energy sword with a quick search was this http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=44311,

One negative point against loading up with mods on your first run, mods can cause crashes, New Vegas crashes enough without them, when you're 40 hours into the game and you need to figure out which of your 30 mods is crashing the game it can ruin the magic, pretty badly.

I'd recommend keeping your mods simple for the first time :)

I also went back to NV a few days ago. After finishing it years ago I was amazed by the number of mods that are out there now so I installed dozens of them. The result: the game crashed before it got to the menu. This is where using a mod manager becomes essential. I just had to uncheck a few of them, run the game, see if it ran, if it did, check one of those at a time and see which one's the culprit. Without a mod manager that would have been hell.

Smig is absolutely correct. I do this all the time, and I have to diagnose my crashes constantly. I've gotten pretty good at it I think, but there are still some glaring errors that escape me.

The easiest way to add in a considerable numbers of weapons with little to no effort is via FOOK, as posted by freqnasty. Some great, similar mods include

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=37002

Fallout New Vegas Classic Weapons Pack-adds in high quality weapons seen in previous Fallout games.

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=37576

WME or

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=39651

WMX

I prefer WME, but you can use either as they are both excellent mods. They add new weapon mods for the existing New Vegas weapons, and they offer support for larger mods like FOOK.

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=36152%5DDragonskin

Dragonskin Tactical Pack-This mod adds differently skinned sets of Dragonskin armor, combat helmets, balaclavas, gasmasks, and backpacks. Great mod to add some high quality armor to your game and outfit your companions with.

Utilities

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=35003%5DWrye

Wrye Flash-THis utility allows you to sort plugins, but most importantly, it creates what is called a Bashed Patch. This patch improves compatibility between mods by merging leveled lists, which basically means that the FOOK's weapons can appear in NPC's inventories along with Classic Fallout weapons.

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=35999%5DBOSS

Last but not least, I would definetly recommend BOSS. This neat utility is not a mod, but it helps sort your load list correctly so the mods work better together. Most of New Vegas' larger mods are included in the loadlist, so mods like FOOK and WME will be properly sorted.

What is essential for some is not essential for others. I can do without eye candy such as special effects and hairdos for companions. For me, having more quests and game to play is essential.

There are two mods that have really stood out to me as being above the rest for Fallout New Vegas:

A World of Pain

There have been a ton of additions and adjustments added to A World of Pain since it was first out. AWOP adds 114 new areas to the Mojave, which makes it the largest and most extensive mod, as far as I know. This adds a lot of game play.

Willow

This is a character mod rather than one of new lands and quests. Still, Willow represents the next generation in Fallout character development. More dialogue, better voice acting (and singing) and better nav meshes allowing her to go where other characters get stuck. Willow excels in technical achievement and enjoyability.

Here are four mods that I have played more than once without a single crash (gotta love that):

D.E.I.M.O.S
Badlands
Psiclones
Dog City Denver

Here are other new lands/ quest mods that will add enjoyment to your game and extend its useful life:

New Vegas Bounties I - Take down those bad guys
New Vegas Bounties ll - Even more hombres to stop
Angel Park - Good for time share rentals and sneaking aboard a space ship
Monster Mod - Zany monsters are all over the Mojave
AWOP Monster Mod - Might as well rumble with those zany monsters
WARZONES - The guys are fighting and want you to join them
The New Bison Steve Hotel - Get an old casino up and running again
Tales from the Burning Sands - Help solve the puzzles left by a Chef and a Botanist. Hope podiatry will the Chapter Three, the mystery of the bunnion.

Here are a few mods that will give more stability and less crashes to your game (decreased blood pressure and aggrevation)"

New Vegas Error Corrections COMPLETE - DLC + GRA - Less crashes means you're a happier camper
Mission Mojave - Speeds things up
NVEC Performance Of The Gods - DLC - MM - Speeds things up
CASM - Makes sure your save is saved
AWOP DLC + GRA Conflict Error Fixes - stabilizes AWOP

These four will make the game easier:

QS_StealthBoyMkII - A stealthboy that becomes active everytime you crouch. Its effectiveness increases as you gain stealth levels.
Silenced Hunting Rifle - Like to be an alive sniper or a dead melee fighter?
HellsingUpdated - A dart gun for you strong silent types.
Sorter - Combined - Keeps your inventory sorted when your Mom is not around.

You can download all of these treasures at the New Vegas Nexus:
