I have just recently purchased a Fallout New Vegas: Ultimate Edition Disc game from Walmart. I have inserted the disc only to find that it will require 4+ hours of "updates" from STEAM. "Seriously?" I say out loud. I just purchased a hard copy of the game (like that means anything with a Steam game), thinking that I might get to play this extended version today (I already own the vanilla version on disc and it is installed) so I hit the windows key + R and in the run window enter " "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -install E: " hoping to bypass this tedious and unjust abomination of download-time...and to no avail. Why, as a law abiding and legitimate consumer, must I wait 4+ hours to install a game which I supposedly just purchased on a disc? And if I did not just purchase it on disc, what did I just spend my money on? Anyone else feel this pain?!?

It'd because Fallout New Vegas runs off of Steamworks. The disk is like a redemption code basically.

I got the retail version last night, I had to exit steam before running the installer on the disk;
only way I could get it to work.

Pretty much does the same as the command in the above posts, but I think you need to delete the local game content and exit steam-
before trying to install from disk.

I hate this. I did not want to have to use stem or wait the 50 min for it to install. These are minor things but they inconveinience me none the less.

Yes. It irritates me to no end. Steam is massively inconvenient for me and does not benefit me, in the least. And, judging by the numerous cracks out there, the DRM doesn't mean anything to those willing to pirate the game.

So, lose/lose, Bethesda.
