I could be way off the mark here, but sometimes I get the feeling that M'aiq the Liar has achieved CHIM, since he appears in each Elder Scrolls game since Morrowind and references things that were left out or improved upon. He appears to break the fourth wall sometimes, which could be seen as him knowing that he's in a video game, and just a little conscious piece of the Godhead.

Anyone else feel this way? Or am I just stating the obvious here to more experienced players and members?

What does chim stand for?

I may be more or less right, but CHIM is the elven word for "royalty." To achieve CHIM, you must understand that you are nothing but a figment of the imagination of a higher being, and yet defy this understanding by declaring yourself truly real and the sum of all things.

When you achieve CHIM, you essentially self-promote yourself to god-hood. But CHIM is a delicate state of mind, and if you ever let your ego shrink beyond what's required to maintain CHIM, then you'll zero-sum yourself and cease to be.

But back OT: M'aiq is not a real character. He respresents Bethesda's perspective on the world they've created and nothing more. Don't take him too seriously.

My only meeting with him in MW, he made some cryptic comment that had a small grain of truth. In two OB encounters, he called me an idiot and then a fool for wanting something that I felt was a serious loss from MW to OB, then ran off before I could "test" to see if he was "essential".

He may or may not have achieved CHIM, but if I see him in OB again, he'll attain "martyrdom" in a hurry.

Yes, I believe M'aiq achieved CHIM. When the character achieves CHIM, he/she knows that his/her entire life is controlled by you, the player. And so M'aiq saying all that goofy stuff (which annoys the hell out of me) is M'aiq's GodHead (which ever employee it is who created him or writes his dialogue) talking to you the player. Ipso facto, one of the Bethesda employees is in the video in the avatar of M'aiq, talking to you. And this character just so happens to be aware of all this in the story of the TES series.

All I know is, when he mocked me for wanting the attribute system back, I ~disable 'd the bastard. CHIM your way out of that, [censored]!

Think of M'aiq as the "Multiplayer" Segment of the game. He's the character that the Devs play, but since they can't actually play him in realtime they pre-program him with their own thoughts and ideas.

No, and I think it kind of devalues the entire premise of CHIM to suggest M'aiq has achieved it. M'aiq is a joke character that breaks the fourth wall, plain and simple. No need to look any further into the lore than that.

Devaluing CHIM? A joke character? Who are you to draw that line? Humor and solemnity are not qualities so black and white that you must separate each entirely from the other. Why is it so hard to believe that an individual who has achieved CHIM would utilize that power and comprehension to play lighthearted games with the lesser creatures of the world? Not everyone seeks to subjugate their people or conquer Tamriel. M'aiq, it would seem, is just a regular guy. He just wants to have a good time.

So he tells lies and half-truths to people who cannot understand him, in so doing speaking to us, the audience, the players, the users, whom he sees and knows as old friends.

Why is CHIM capitalized? It looks like an acronym to less-lore-savvy people...

Because it's the Royal Canterlot Voice... IT IS TRADITION TO USE THIS MUCH VOLUME WHEN USING THE ROYAL CANTERLOT VOICE.

On a more serious note, I have no idea why it's capitalized; all I know is that all the other "words of royalty" appear capitalized in the 36 Lessons of Vivec.

It's to make it seem important, and somehow well-thought-out as a religious concept.

For the next installment, or skyrim expansion, the devs should put in a character that's having an existential crisis. He/she is freaking out that he/she is trapped on Nirn and needs to get back to "reality", wherever that is. He/she starts panicking and runs off having a mental breakdown, wondering if he/she is even real to begin with. It would be fun to have a small joke like that played on us, even to screw with our heads a little.
