Tes Construction Set - How to figure out what texture is use

What is the best way to find the same texture that is being used on the ground? I'm trying to put the same texture on the ground but i dont know what one they used.

As far as I know there is no way to tell aside from visual recognition. Beth gave some clues, by naming textures after areas, like "AIDirt" so you know if you're in the Ascadian isles you may want to look at those textures first, but the CS doesn't record that info anywhere on exterior landscape.

I thought somebody mentioned some functionality in MGE that would do that, but I never really heard anything about it for certain.

If you use SmartMerger, you can query specific textures and any lands that use that texture will also come up on the search. (Internally it expands the names and includes it during it's querying). So.. (Replace ashfault_01 with any normal texture name)

./SmartMerger.exe file.esp "ashfault_01"

Well, that's kind of helpful, but kind of not at the same time. In order to make that query, you have to have a pretty good idea what the name of the texture is to start with or try querying every available texture one at a time. Then if you have texture replacers, things get even more complicated.

I can make smartmerger work, but only the gui. that is because of my own ignorance, I suppose... I can't get command prompt to change from C:> to M: (where smartmerger and Morrowind are located) for more than half a second. I've googled for the correct command, but they all just say "cd M:" or "chdir M:" which doesnt work. I was never good at DOS.... :D

Well, actually just saying "m:" would work, cd is for directories. If you use a bash shell or something (MingW or Cygwin) then "cd m:" would be applicable, as it would then point you to "/cygdrives/m/" or something like that... (Redirection, based on how unix based systems connect their files together)


Don't forget, as you are typing in directory names, pressing 'Tab' will expand and fill in the missing letters. Quite often I find myself doing 'cd Prog{tab}/Beth{tab}/{tab}/Data{tab}' or something like that :smile:

edit: If you want I can make a quick modification that will output the names of all the textures used in a LAND area... But since I'm working on my D version it would take away from my current work.

Thanks for the tip, I can now use smartmerger up to my own level of inability...:)

So, I entered the command as you gave it, using Morrowind.esm and "AI_Dirt"... got a long list of cells, and that's cool.

Don't distract yourself on my account though, I know most of the textures by sight, and I undertook this as a learning opportunity. Thanks again...

Visually may be one thing, but working with commandline and text and sometimes not even touching the CS for long periods, that just won't work. I'll add a new simple command that expands said land textures when it's enabled. Otherwise the output may be a bit much :P Give me an hour or so and I'll post a recompiled version with that new feature.

By the way, you don't HAVE to be in the command shell to do custom commandline actions. People keep forgetting this.

In the GUI, hit Alt+Ctrl+Backspace. That special key sequence basically says 'I know what I'm doing let me access that text block', and you can modify it and add in what you want (Literally, what's in the box is what you execute). However if you modify anything elsewhere, the text you modified will be gone.

Anyways, have fun with your textures needs :smile:

(For this feature I think I used a total of... 12 lines? Mmmm... too much overhead framework done ahead of time)
