Windows XP Ding crash

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 1:44 pm

This is a strange crash and I wish I knew what to do or find out what is wrong. As I play Oblivion the Windows XP Ding sound will make noise once about 10 minutes in. Then, after 10 or 15 more minutes the same ding will sound and Oblivion will dump me to desktop. How do I find out what is wrong when there is no message to tell me what the problem was?

Are you using any mods (i.e., Crash Prevention System)?

Oh, no, don't install the Crash Prevention System. I was just wondering whether or not you had it installed because it makes that sort of noise when it detects a potential crash. If it's an arbitrary ding before crashing, I'd guess some sort of hardware alert. As in, maybe your system sounds an alarm/beep when one of the components (i.e., CPU or GPU) reaches some warning temperature...

Edit: Your load order looks very clean. Does your obse log contain anything about any of mods crashing? Check that and also, if you do not already have it installed, install Conscribe to get per-mod information. Maybe you'll catch the errors there. I think Conscribe requires one other OBSE plugin. Just read the reqs section.

Thank you for your advice, Tomlong7520. My windows is not set up to beep to warn for temperature, and I regularly spray the motherboard with duster. Before I saw your latest post I removed MMM and all components completely. After that was done I was able to play Oblivion for as long as I wanted without even a single crash.

I've seen several people testify that MMM is stable, but it doesn't seem to be so on my machine ( Core2Duo 3.0 GHz with 4 GB RAM ). If I decide to try MMM again then I will remember Conscribe. I will check my OBSE log for any information on the crashes. Maybe it will be good enough with just Frans and Integration for now.

Hmmm... Interesting... MMM, I feel, is pretty stable, with the exception of certain plugins, but I don't see any suspects in your load order. You could always try enabling the add-ons one at a time until you run into the crash again. That's not too many plugins to go through. Maybe give each one a day of play time before adding the next. At least, you've narrowed down the possible cause to a very small list. Way to go!

Happy gaming!
