--Story--
Born into the Desert Rangers in the year 2255, Ruin was trained in the art of warfare since the day he could hold a gun. Having noticed that he had a proficiency for sniping, he was trained to be physically fit, while still being able to take full advantage of his highly agile body.
16 years after he was born, the Ranger Unification Treaty took place, uniting the New California Republic with the Desert Rangers. Not all Rangers agreed with the unification, however, and saw it as an abomination, throwing out all the hard work they've spent protecting this land with a single stroke of a pencil. This group went on to become known as the Desert Ranger Remnants. This had caused hostilities between the NCR, the now assimilated Rangers, and the Remnants.
2 weeks years after the treaty, the Remnants, or "Family" as they called themselves, moved into an abandonded bunker complex on the outskirts of Nevada. Their lifeblood soon became scouts and scavengers, able to quickly and quietly scavenge food, munitions, and other items deemed necessary for survival. Ruin, being the age of 16 had not yet come into maturity in the groups eyes. Men and Women of the Family reach "maturity" when they are given a chosen profession. This changed from the groups previous system since they are not as numbered as they were before the treaty. Having been a sniper before the treaty, the family has seen no real use for Ruin's skills with the family's current position in the wasteland. This had frustrated Ruin to no end. So, against orders, Ruin left the complex under cover of night to prove himself, only taking a large pack, his trusty rifle, 2 bottle waters, a Salisbury Steak, and enough ammunition to handle anything that might get in his way. Little had Ruin known, however, that his childhood friend, Vanessa had fallowed him.
Ruin came across a Raider compound, the likes of which he had only heard of in tales told by senior officers. Ruin had resolved to get in and out with plenty of food for the family, under one self imposed rule; no casualties. Ruin wasn't exactly opposed to killing lawless people like Raiders, but he knew that he could pick them off with his rifle before they even saw him. Ruin wanted a challenge, as he seems to the vast majority of the time. Ruin quickly and quietly snuck in through the back, unaware that Vanessa had been, and is still, following him. Sticking to the shadows and avoiding confrontation, he quickly made it to the kitchens of the complex, making sure to take whatever water and food he could find without getting caught. After "raiding" three of the four buildings in the complex, Ruin's pack was nearly bursting at the seams. "This will feed the family for weeks!" he thought to himself. Quickly turning around Ruin almost yelled in surprise, not 3 feet away from him was Vanessa, seeing what her friend was up to. After arguing in what would sound like silence to anyone outside of the family, they quickly backtracked out of the compound, carefully avoiding areas of high traffic and sticking to the shadows. After getting a good distance from the compound, and the watchful eyes of the Raiders, Vanessa asked why he hadn't killed any of them, and stated that it would have been easy for him to do so. Ruin simply stated: "I wanted a challenge."
Ruin and Vanessa got back shortly after daybreak, where the "Elders" of the family were waiting for them. Having found out from Vanessa what Ruin had done, he was scolded, severely, but the Elders also saw his potential. Underneath that rough exterior, was the heart of a scout, and it seems, finally, Ruin had matured. Being able to quickly and silently scavenge food from a Raider base, Ruin soon became a prodigy and a valuable asset among his family. Having lost several members to Raiders, Mutants, NCR Patrols, and in some cases; Legion, Ruin soon became the groups primary source for food, intel, weapons, and munitions.
Cut to Ruin at the age of 24, Ruin was tasked on a special scavange and scout mission. Leaving the safety of his home once again, He entered the wastes in search of food, and; perhaps most importantly, intelligence on the recent "Damn War" as the locals call it. Ruin didn't see the need for the intelligence as the war didn't affect his family. His family, however, disagrees, knowing that the NCR has been after their heads since their refusal to join the rest of the Rangers in the assimilation. They see the war as a prime oppurtunity to take them out, and have sent Ruin to investigate. "Why would they make an effort to come after us for so long?" he would ask, only to get "Because we are an anomaly, an unknown quantity. Perhaps they see us as a threat; though weither it is a threat to their authority or survival remains to be seen." So, reluctantly Ruin went into the wastes once again to obey his orders.
Ruin spent the next few days traveling from town to town, bartering for food and information, avoiding NCR Patrols whenever possible. Detection wasn't likely, while Ruin was born before the treaty, and the conflict began, he had changed greatly in both stature and looks, so they couldn't tell if he was a Ranger, or just another Wastelander. Still, it was good to be cautious, if he were detected and captured, the entire family would be put at risk. This could not happen.
About 3 days after starting his journey Ruin met a merchant at the 188 Trading Post that wasn't as tight lipped as the rest, a few caps and he was singing like a bird. Apparently the NCR were at war with some force called the
Legion and weren't actively seeking out anyone else. How reliable this information was, however, remained to be seen; but if it was
true, then the family had nothing to worry about. Ecstatic about the news, Ruin threw some extra caps the merchants way, bought some food for the family and himself (as well as water), and started his 3 day trek back to the bunker they have lived in for the past 8 years.
Ruin arrived home, to see that the bunker entrance had been left open. This was odd because security had always been the family's first thought. Nothing came before the groups security. Ruin cautiously entered the dim lit complex, rifle at the ready and eyes watching every little movement. Making his way through the complex, Ruin came to the Mess Hall and sat his pack on the floor, realizing that it hit something wet. Ruin quickly flipped the lights on, and to his horror, saw the bodies of his family strewn throughout the Mess Hall. He stopped at every one of them to examine their vitals, not one survived. It wasn't just the shock of seeing his family dead that made him snap; it was the way they were
arranged. As if the Mess Hall had become a mass grave, their lifeless bodies where just thrown into a pile. Ready to get sick, Ruin turned to see some writing on the wall:
"This is what happens if you challenge our authority. The NCR will take action."Filled to the brim with rage, Ruin said his goodbyes, put on the armour he earned 8 years ago, and left the bunker for the last time.
2 years later, Ruin is now 26. Having worked as a Courier for the past two years and seeing the Mojave for all it's worth, Ruin worked to the bone trying to find information on tthe NCR troopers that had slaughtered his family, and, if possible, the person who ordered it. That is, until a particular job caught his eye. A delivery order for one Mister House. This was his chance, he thought. He knew that relations with NCR and the enigmatic Mr. House where shaky at best, as the NCR have been vying for control of the strip, and this might be what he's been looking for. So Ruin put his name down for the job, and got it. Ruin went into the job thinking it was just another routine delivery mission... it was anything but routine..........
TL;DR - Ruin spent his life training to become a Desert Ranger in a group of remnants that didn't want to join the NCR. Became one at the age of 16. Went out to gather intel and food at the age of 24 only to come back and find that the NCR had killed his family. Now he's out for revenge and took a job as a courier so he could better gather intel.
Sorry, I tend to get carried away when I tell people the backstory for my characters.
