I've played it. I think its more of messing around with the nukes than Fallout. Recreating October 23, 2077? Not likely.

Never even heard Rook before  I've always called it Tower. Maybe that's because I'm swedish, don't really hear these "special" terms often... and it's in the shape of a tower

I call them towers too, I call knights horses, I call pawns palaces, and I call bishops "hunters" my dad always called them hunters.

I'm a Russian, I guess it's just us Europeans who don't have fancy names for them.

I call pawns meat shields and that's the only difference from the 'official' names.

In swedish, "pawn" is "bonde" (="peasant"), "bishop" is "l?pare" (=courier/runner/scout) and "knight" is "springare" (=steed). This talk about chess really makes me want to play it, but I don't know anyone who doesn't think it svcks :(

Look how off topic this rather pointless thread went.

We just started talking about chess! I enjoy chess but only my grampa will play against me.

Nobody else in my family ever faces us because none of them are any good at it. I'm alright but my grampa's ridiculous, even at eighty he's sharp enough to not lose at it.

That's odd because Chess came from Europe.

The rules that we now know for chess came from Europe. Before that there wasn't any real rules, from what I remember it was like a cross between chinese checkers and chess.

According to some fictional book I read chess came before humanity... But it also blames most times someone goes crazy and kills a bunch of people on demons so I am inclined to believe that is not a fact.

Well I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure European explorers (I believe they were British) went to India, learned their checker-like game, rethought it, and made chess.

The history of chess spans some 1500 years. The earliest predecessors of the game originated in India, before the 6th century AD. From India, the game spread to Persia. When the Arabs conquered Persia, chess was taken up by the Muslim world and subsequently spread to Southern Europe. In Europe, chess evolved into roughly its current form in the 15th century.

That is what I mean by Europeans inventing Chess. They set the rules to what we know now call chess. If we went back 1500 years to India, we would be like "what the hell are they playing?"

Its like saying American Football dates back to when soccer was invented. Two very different sports. So the game people played 1500 years ago is very different from what we now call chess. Chess evolved from that game, doen't make it the same game though. So IMO they are different games, and Europeans invented it.
