Clarification: By poetic, I mean the race of a Nerevarine which makes the story simply... make the most sense, or seem the most just or wild, etc.

For example, in Skyrim, it makes the most poetic sense for the Dovahkiin to be a human: he fights the Thalmor, goes to Sovngarde, carries the title held by so many human Emperors, etc. There's nothing to keep someone from being an Altmer or Dunmer, but being a man, using the thu'um and walking in the steps of Talos just seems right.

I'm going to be starting Morroblivion (a port of the entirety of Morrowind into Oblivion that allows for beefier graphics/gameplay) soon. I'm still conflicted on what my race should be! Shall I choose a Dunmer and truly be Lord Nerevar (yes, I know he was Chimer) reborn? Should I be a Breton or Imperial, owing my allegiance to the Emperor and fulfilling the prophecy to serve the Empire and discover my destiny? Or should I be an Argonian in an ironic twist of fate, and become a hero of Morrowind, despite the debasemant of my people? I'm looking to you, Lore Buffs, to help me decide.

I tried to be as Nerevar as possible. Sadly, I cannot make a face similar to his nor can I get a decent mohawk. Neither can I join House Indoril. And Ordinator Armour and Moon and Star are pretty mediocre.

Dunmer's the obvious choice.

I'd argue Khajiit would be the second most fitting option as they are the only other race that reveres and worships Azura as prominently as the Dunmer do.

Or you could just be a Nord, and say that Azura has a thing for palpable irony.

It doesn't really matter, anyone can become the Nerevarine just by following in Nerevars footsteps. You were not destined to become the Nerevarine, its just a matter of fullfilling the prophecy.

I'd probably say dunmer, followed by imperial. But for the biggest slap in the face, go with Saxhleel or khajiit.

And would Nords really be more ironic than Argonians? And I'm of the opinion that most Daedric Princes feed off irony. Or perhaps that's too much time spent with Sheogorath.

Be an argonian and destroy Morrowind from the inside out.

Really, what matters is that it was an outlander. The Dunmer from Morrowind hate Dunmer not from Morrowind just as much as they hate an Argonian or Nord. I actually recall a line of dialogue suggesting they hate them more, since they are a Dunmer who doesn't know how to be a Dunmer. A Nord at least has the excuse of being a brainless barbarian and the Argonians are savage marsh-dwellers. They just don't know better. But a non-Morrowind Dunmer? The lowest of the low.

Bingo. The dunmer are not racist, they're xenophobic. Due to other races being in the Cammora Tong, I'd assume that if you're culturally from Morrowind and born in the province the dark elves would accept you.

Ach! Agony on a lore-ific level! I can't decide!

I've narrowed it down (barely) to Dunmer or Argonian. But I'm really looking for some grand, convincing piece of writing to choose a race!

If you see Morrowind's main plot as a condemnation of the Houses, an imperial or Argonian makes a great crusader against the False Gods. If you see the Tribunal's story as maybe more tragic, dunmer is the way to go.

I created a Dunmer, gave him a mohawk, and immediately felt wrong when everyone called me an outsider. I understand, I'm not from Morrowind, but it still seems strange. Muertos, could you explain to me why a Dark Elf is more tragic?
