Rome exists to archaeologists who've brushed Nero in his hundred-fold aspects, armchair historians, those who play general, and textbooks. Each is a different city; one is streets in exerted detail, but another is stoned spectacle. One is historic and another superficial. But where Rome is withdrawing into imagery, Cyrodiil is gradually actualized; she's becoming real. So, the difference is Rome's legions are a fiction.

Pre-Marian or Post- ?
thats completely irrelevant even after the marian reforms the roman legion evolved, the legions Ceasar fought with and the legions Trajan used are two different entities, both in outlook make up and tactics ( remember thats 200 years difference )
Skyrim legionaire are mostly late roman post -constatine in rank make up and tactics in my opinion , but then again it is a fantasy setting , little or no point comparing them to RL history

For your information the word legion comes from the latin Legio wich means levy , a throwback from the early and middle republic when roman legions where made up by citizen levies , where every man who had property was obliged to serve when called up and the legion were loyal to the state , where as post marian legions tended to be loyal to the general who gave the victories and booty

Well it depends, the imperial armor changes with each empire. For example in Morrowind the imperial army was more like a combination of medieval armor with the knights wearing roman like armor while the ranking system was more of a medieval system, women can serve as well as non-imperials and they use various tactics, not just common roman ones.

Snip

Erm, yeah, thanks, but I already knew all of that.

But the reason I asked that is, of course, because the Marian reforms are really the most drastic change. It introduced standardized, state-supplied kit; made pretty much all infantry into principes, as opposed to the graded troops the likes we see in New Vegas; and stabilized the unit-strength into the non-indicative numbers we all know and love today (i.e. 80-man Centuriae). It's really the biggest turning point in Roman military history, that that turned what was really a conscripted militia of bumble[censored] farmers, who lost pitifully to Brennus and had to hide from Hannibal, into the professional military machine that would enforce the claim of MARE NOSTRUM over the entirety of the Mediterranean.

To insist that any of the subsequent change is comparable in impact is just being didactic to the point of error.

Let's dial back the sarcasm a little. It's a legitimate point-- the gender dynamics in Tamriel are different than real life.
So are women in Tamriel's armies more or less capable than their real world counterparts? I know Airborne school dropped all pull up requirements, because women dependably failed.

The question centers on requirements in Tamriel's armies as much as it does on anything else.

Family, six, faith, and Septims.

There's probably a legion devoted to any number of the Divines' aspects, cohorts, and duties.

It's good you reminded the reader. The practice of trading Emperors passed away, once the Alessians' source trickled shut.

Those are for knightly orders.
