Newbie questions about Daggerfall

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 5:59 pm

I've started playing around in Daggerfall, and I've got a couple of questions about how a couple of things work.

First, I noticed that there aren't any armor-type skills(heavy, medium, light). So, what effects do armor choices have in Daggerfall? e.g. does wearing heavy armor make you less able to sneak around?

Speaking of sneaking, how do I even do that? Do I press the crouch button?

Finally, my magicka is way low(31 points) and I can barely cast anything. How do I improve that? Just by leveling and putting points into intellect? Or does improving my magic skills have any effect on that?

Armor does not affect stealth or spellcasting in any way. It just weighs a lot.

Press ESC -> Controls to see what Sneak is mapped to. Technically, crouching works too because all sneaking does is slow down your movement speed, which Crouching also does to a lesser extent. Your stealthiness is greatly affected by your movement speed.

Your class affects your magicka multiplier. Base is 0.5x INT, but you can choose Special Advantages during class creation to increase it up to 3x INT. Your skill in the school of magic affects the casting costs.

I don't know if it makes it harder to sneak, heavier armor just weighs a lot. There is a sneak button, and it just makes you walk slower. Look on your key commands list for it, and remap it to your liking. If you are going to use magic, make sure you take the intel x3 bonus in the character creation. They were big about limiting mages in the old games, so if you want to decently spam spells like the new ones you'll need that bonus and a good amount of intelligence and willpower.

Thanks for the answers. I still can't find sneak, though; I'd already checked the control, but I can't find it. There's crouch, run, jump, etc. but no sneak. =/

What's the default key for sneak?

Are you using mouselook or is your mouse set as the cursor? In cursor mode, there is no sneak button but you control how fast you move by where you click toward the edge of the screen.

To set to mouselook: ESC -> Controls -> Mouse and set to View. Enter toggles a cursor if you need it.

Much better, thank you very much!

Now if only it wouldn't freeze when I rest...
