The Skeleton key takes away the need for any skill at the lockpicking mini-game, so all my characters use it. The "Open Lock" spells lag behind the locks in availability, so they're not quite a viable alternative.
Azura's star is essential if you have weapons that need recharging, but not all my characters do. There are a couple of pure mages that never use any weapons, and one or two using non-enchanted bows or swords as backups to magic.
The only artifact weapon I ever use is Umbra, as I find a weapon without soul trap is a liability, running out of charge when you need it most. Umbra's not that great, as it doesn't do anything but soul trap, but its high base damage gets it some love as a switch-to weapon to feed the primary (which would be another enchanted sword for any character using Umbra as well). Once I've made a final self-enchanted weapon, Umbra would be retired.
Artifact armor also retires, if used at all. Rings get used some of the time, but any can be replaced with a self-made or non-artifact one.
