Going to buy a desktop

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 6:19 pm

Hello!

I'm planning on buying a desktop computer soon but I don't know what to get.

I want to get a desktop that can play Morrowind with all the up to date graphical enhancment mods such as MGE, etc.

I want to be able to smoothly (as in a goo0d 30-60 fps) play a game that looks like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_723879&feature=iv&src_vid=9NX-MvnYUEs&hd=1&v=uhuHaNX93_s

(I will NOT be using the 2011 mod!! I am just using it as a graphical comparison!)

Any advise? I also want this computer to be as upgradable as possible.

Go to a store which sells PCs. Ask for the best gaming PC they have (that is within your price range.)
You are likely to get the best information straight from the people who sell PCs on a daily basis.

In my experience, the people who work at these stores always know what you'll need to be play any type of game, because most of them are video game fans.

First decide whether going for a brand name computer or a custom built PC.

Brand name computers are likely to have been set up properly, incompatibility issues with hardware and software likely to have been sorted out and typically offer a more reliable and user friendly experience than a custom built pc. Brand name pcs are typically the ones you see in supermarkets , department stores and pc superstores, the main drawbacks with a brand name pc are they tend to be quite expensive , technical support can be expensive as it may mean paying premium rate telephone charges to dedicated manufacturers help desks, in store support is usually poor as employees tend to be shopworkers with little product knowledge and with no particular experience or enthusiasm for the products they are selling. With a large variety of models on the shelves often with similar specs, many only recently released it is doubtful that the average shop employee can advise of the model most suitable for your requirements , and most likely you will end up making a choice by comparing system specs from the abundance of leaflets available , though this could be stabbing in the dark if not particularly familiar with the technologies used.

If going for a custom pc then smaller speciality shops are often the best choice and typically offer high performance pc's at low price, product knowledge customer service and technical support are typically the best in these sort of shops as often the business owner , technician and shop assistant is the same person. Go for one that has been in business for few years and ideally one recommended by friends that have used the service, the main drawvback is that low cost/ high performance machines tend to be constructed from poor quality components which are adequate for light/medium pc users, but heavy users really need to be focussing on quality components , do you buy a cheap and nasty component that perhaps lasts 2-3 yaers of heavy use or for a couple of septims extra do you buy quality components that last 5+ years ?

Personally speaking i would go for a custom built pc but made with quailty brand components which may cost me perhaps 25% more than a cheapie which should pay dividends in the long run as savings on frequent repair and replacement bills , not to mention stress and inconvenience more than offset the lower initial purchase price of a cheap computer.

If it's just for older games - I would suggest a second hand/ rebuilt system with a newer nVidia 1 meg video card.
Morrowind requires very little to play well and look great.
Spend more for the monitor and graphic card then the PC.
Morrowind was made to run on PCs built during the late nineties and early 2000s . So any PC made in the last 10 years will work fine.
I have a Quad core intel chip and to make Morrowind (or any old software) work better, I have found that by running the game on 1 core instead of 4 it never crashes(for me).

Thank you all for the great replies!

I have recently (today) run into some money :P I was thinking about getting this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.790392

I think it would last me quite a while and seems to be quite a good computer that is exactly at my price range maximum. What do you guys think?

It looks like like you'll be getting respectable performance at a low price, i don't see a graphics card in the bundle ( not essential but desirable as onboard graphics chips could be a bit limited )and presumably you will need to purchase/obtain a version of windows, if going for a self build then this is perhaps as good as anything. If you think you can assemble it yourself or you know people that can do it for you then yes why not . If you get stuck on assembling it then in a worst case scenario you can take it into a shop.

Yes, I was going to pick up a simple $20.00 monitor until I get enough money for a good one then I would pick up a video card later. I just want something powerful enough to play a heavily modded Morrowind once I have the video card/HD widescreen monitor.

Thank you very much.

EDIT~~~

I already have both a copy of Windows Vista and Windows XP.

I would install XP until I can get a copy of 7 (unless you all think that is a bad idea and I should go with Vista..? :P ).
