Weird things I never understood in Oblivion

Why do two imperial forest rangers fight each other near Bruma, killing each other over and over? I've seen this in many games. Sometimes they'll repeat.

Why is it when killing the retiring Imperial captain, for the Dark Brotherhood with the sanctioned rose arrow, it is almost impossible not to get a bounty? The only way to avoid a bounty I've found is to remain hidden by the rocks near the pool where he bathes, and do NOT look at a guard or anyone else- even if wearing full chameleon. The only times I avoided the bounty was when I was positioned here many hours beforehand and did not stand or look around in any way. As for killing the captain of the guard in the same city later- good luck. I've killed her alone in her room and still get a bounty.

First answer- NPCs automatically retaliate if attacked and do not yeild to members of the same faction. This means if Ranger A wanders into the path of Ranger B's arrow that is in flight, he'll attack Ranger B.

Second... well, you're killing a guard. He or people near him will scale to your level, and may have a high enough sneak skill to detect you.

Third, all guards are Psychic. If you attack one, they *will* zero in on your location to kill you. Even if you wipe out, say, Bruma, guards in the other cities will try to arrest you.

It's always the same two forest rangers. Then they stand there and hurl insults at each other and keep shooting arrows until one dies. I think your explanation is probably right; there's a deer nearby with an arrow in it.

I don't recall having any problems with the quest to kill Adamus.

However it is very, very difficult to kill Caelia Draconis without a bounty. It can be done but it is extremely difficult.

I've encountered the same two rangers and wondered what it was all about. I did find it amusing though both trading insults with each other for about 3 minutes lol. I jumped on the nearest rock, sat back and enjoyed the duel.
The winner then ran off so I followed him and he ran straight to a pack of deers nearby but encountered a brown bear there too..needless to say his victory was short lived. :(

My character has killed individuals who he thought were too dangerous to let live. He did it with over 100% chameleon and no one around to see anything. Yet he got a bounty
Lucky for him though I′m on PC and as I saw that bounty as totally unreasonable and unrealistic I took it away through the magic of the console :celebration:

Here's a couple more;

Edla Dark-heart and Shadowmere always have a fight to the death right outside Bruma if they see each other. Usually Edla instigates it... I don't know why. I usually defend my horse but feel bad about it. Tonight I just let shadowmere kill her, as when I hit Edla with my blade she yelled, "Hey, I'm on your side". I stopped fighting and just watched.

On the back road from Leyawiin (Yellow road?) to Imperial city is a old dirt road that leads past several monuments and a Kenerath circle stone shrine. I always pick up the Kenerath requirement for knights of the nine here. There is a large rock near the intersection of these two roads and in that large rock a bandit is trapped. the bandit acts as if everything is peachee keeno, and yells at you and attacks if you get near enough. You can sometimes see a arm or sword or mace or leg stick out of the rock. I once came back along this road and found shadowmere unconscious lying by the rock. Shadowmere attacks the rock and can't really hurt the bandit encased inside much. You can hurt the bandit if you stand outside the rock and swing your weapon or toss fireballs into the occasional leg or arm you might see. Tonight the bandit even got loose and attacked! That was new. Often after the bandit is dead the body falls clear of the rock. I believe there are sometimes two bandits working as a team though usually only one is stuck in the rock. I don't remember seeing two stuck.

Oh, regarding Highwaymen. I always try to get the Highwaymen to accept my 'yield' usually by hitting him pretty good until he decides the best part of valor is to let me live. If you can get a highwayman to do this, later you can talk to him. I've even had conversations with the same highwaymen on more than one occasion. He thought the fights in the arena were staged with fruit juice, if I recall. the thing is, you become friends. I don't know how long this lasts- I think the game reconsitutes him and that goes. Or a Imperial soldier kills him- something. I've had them regress and fight me all over again- but have made friends with several of them.

I don't think I've ever been able to get a bandit or marrauder or any other bad guy to do this, but the highwaymen seem different. Lately the highwaymen have been pretty vicious so Im wondering if a patch eliminated this or its still possible? The best candidates are the one hiding in the bushes outside the tiny stable on the Castle end of Skingrad, and the one on the road near the Roxey Inn. Never had any luck with the one by Anvil you first encounter as you near the city.

There's a highwayman, you meet him I think, near Fort Ash, the fort you must walk through the courtyard on your way to Cheydinhal from the IC. If you actually don't have enough gold, he'll send you on your way. The second time you meet him, if you can fire off a charm spell before he runs up to you (Use an AOE charm spell if you have one, as you just have to hit near him, and not actually hit him...or sneak up to him and fire the spell) you can become friends with him, and he will never again accost you, and you will always have a friendly face on that road. :hugs:

Speaking of kindly highwaymen, I take the iiberty of posting an encounter with one such that first appeared in a now forgotten thread.

We had begun investigating cryptic leads found in a recently acquired journal. One such deciphered missive, seemingly more straightforward than the rest, mentioned an object purportedly located somewhere near the northeast curve of Red Ring Road. As luck would have it, our only official commitment was a tax-warrant run to Roxey Inn. That could be accomplished en route.

So it was. We left the Imperial City on foot without either Wolfgang or Groucho in tow, a rarity for us, and marched straight to the Roxey. Tax collected, we headed east on the Red. Upon reaching the bend in question, very near where I planned to start our search, a Highwayman accosted us. Rather than spouting the usual "Your money or your life." doggerel he grinned broadly and greeted me warmly as Champion, offering assistance. "Well now," thought I, "there's hope for this fellow yet. Maybe he's not wholly committed to a life of crime and will see the error of his ways." I was not on duty and thus not required to bring criminals to justice. I resolved to give him the benefit of the doubt and leave him be.

That was the plan anyway. Vilja saw things differently. Blame it on youth. Blame it on rash impulsiveness. Blame it on whatever. It matters not. What does matter is that no sooner had I bid the khajiit good day than Vilja drew her blade and assaulted him. My first inclination was to join the battle, making fast work of an obviously over-matched adversary. Out came my sword. I closed on the prey. But it just didn't feel right. The man had done me no harm. Vilja had started this. Let her finished it if she could. I sheathed my weapon and resolved to remain a bystander.

Only, this khajiit was not so over-matched as I supposed. Not three double-headed ax strokes later Vilja's blade went sailing through the air to land with a clang on the road some distance away. The cat proceeded to pound the living daylights out of her. She took quite a trouncing, at one point herself being thrown into a nearby boulder. Unable to reclaim her sword (and I was not about to retrieve it) she instead relied on spells to survive, an advantage her foe did not possess.

The tide slowly turned. Little by little Vilja whittled the khajiit down, his health fading while hers, thanks to magical intervention, remained steady if low. The outcome became a forgone conclusion.

Enough was enough. I could not permit so worthy an adversary, who had proven himself the better warrior, to perish. I stepped forward, grabbed Vilja by the shoulders, and gave her a sharp dressing-down. She calmed almost immediately, as did the khajiit. We then parted ways, us leaving the road in search of that mysterious object, he returning to his place of concealment at roadside, an amused and bemused look on his face, there to lick his wounds and hopefully contemplate a return to the straight and narrow.

Our lead, by the way, proved false. If the object was indeed nearby we never found it.

Ah, but those were the days! Life didn't consist of nothing but ending patrols and delivery runs back then.

Thank Stendarr you stepped in. I was reading and was hoping that you would.

Ah yes. It's difficult without a map in the wild, and when I lay it out somewhere in a tavern it's hard to read through all the beer and food stains.

Here's one more- everytime I do Botheia's (sic) quest and get the two families to destroy each other, the dark elves almost always win. My son reports the Nords sometimes win in his games, but for me, It's Dark Elves.
I don't know why that is.
